I never scoped any of the .416s I had (or the .470) -- the largest I've scoped has been a .375.
FWIW, that rifle has about 700 rds through it with the original scope (a straight tube VX-II 1x4x20)

FWIW, that rifle has about 700 rds through it with the original scope (a straight tube VX-II 1x4x20) I have one of those scopes as well. It spent many years on a M700 Classic in .35 Whelen. Never a problem. Sitting on the shelf now that the Whelen has a new Leupold 3x.

If you can shoot a barrel out from under a scope without it losing zero, then that's a "tough" scope. Never thought of it that way and it's probably very true.
