Anybody compare the optical quality on the FX3 6x36 to the 6x42. A noticeable difference in lower light?
The eye relief on these does look wonderful. Glass quality compared to meopta, minox and such?
Only thing I would need more power than 6 x for is load development (and those tiny prairie dogs).
Battue: Who are Pat and Rick?
Thanks for all your advice.

Sceanor and RCamuglia here on the fire. Another would be Montana Marine.
6x42 wins the optical quality race, but not by much. I can't tell all that much difference, but young eyes may be able to get a couple more minutes if that is important.
Never looked thru the others.

If shooting at 500 yds or less I'd go with the FX3 6X42 LR
If its a dedicated 500+ yd rifle I'd go super chicken 5-15.
Dedicated long range mountain rifle...VX3 3-10X40

I think one of these would be hard to beat. http://www.cameralandny.com/optics2/meopta.pl?page=meopta541800Or any of BSA's recommendations. My RUM wore a 3.5-10x50 Leupold. Used it for elk and it worked fine. With any decent quality scope the recoil of a 300WM should not be a concern.
I am continually astounded at how quickly people make up their minds on little evidence or none at all. Jack O'Connor

Battue, he put a cap of 10-12 on the power range. He states, "probably no need to go more than 10-12"... If a guy can't use a 3-9 in just about any kind of hunting scenario, he needs to take up golf or sewing/knitting... Just sayin.. A low/medium powered fixed isn't the answer to everything, just a lot of things. Just sayin.... I know you love them ol buddy. When I was packing my elk rifle this year, I kept it on 6x most of the time and thought, "damn, I could probably hunt with just a 6x leupold".... . However, I've been using the good ol 3-9x40 for many years and old habits are hard to break.. . I'm hoping the new Swarovski 3-9x36 works out ....
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Meopta makes a nice fixed 6X42mm. I like their #4 reticle, too. Bob

Meopta 3-12x56 illuminated 4k with a Kenton elevation turret. It's fun spending the OP's money.

BSA, I've hunted with the 6X42 FX3 for 2 years and the conclusion I came to was it would work for about any situation. However, in comparison to scopes that go as low as 2 or 3 power I much prefer the lower power scope with the wider field of view as much of the hunting I do often presents close shots in dense Forrest. I've recently graduated the straight 6 to rifles I use in more open country that often presents shots from 300 to 600 yds. Shod

1. Leupold VX3 3.5-10x40 2. Zeiss 3-9x40 conquest 3. Swarovski 3-9x36 4. Burris FFII 3-9x40 with ballistic plex reticle. 5. B&L or Bushnell elite 4200 2.5-10x40 6. Nikon monarch 2.5-10x42
No particular order... All good, I would add a VX-6 2-12x42 to that list as well.

I picked up a used model 70 classic in 300 Win. Will probably get a new stock but still a carry gun. For this I'd do a VX-3 3.5-10x40.....anything better is going to be much heavier.
