My ultra meager 30-30 collection was enhanced this week end when I found a Savage 170 in 30-30 at a gun show in Greenville,SC. I have been looking for one of these for about four years at shows and this is the first one I have seen.
It is in very good condition and has the checkered stock and forearm as opposed to the very plain Jane uncheckered ones I see advertised on Gunbroker and elsewhere.
The 170 was made from 1970 thru 1981 in 30-30 and .35Rem.This one is 1971 vintage according to the serial number.
I'm a lefty shooter and the tang safety and pump action of the 170 appeal to me. I'm looking forward to seeing how it shoots.
Any informative comments on the 170 will be much appreciated.

I had one as a kid. dropped it over a 15ft bluff one day. ruined my 4x weaver micro trac and took a chip out of the stock. bought a new stock for it and sent the scope in to weaver. six months later I traded it for my first 99,an EG that I still have. that 170 cost me 69 dollars brand new. took me all summer to save up enough for that and the scope.

I purchased two of them when they first came out in 30-30 and being LH is why . I couldn't live with the rattly forearm in the deer woods , just to much noise for my liking , so gave both of them away one to my brother and one to my ex- father in law, both now gone under . They liked them but they weren't as picky as me when it come to deer rifles and how well they functioned in the deer woods.

The 170 was a great idea but put together on the cheap in my opinion. I had a .30-30 in great condition appearance wise but it had an ejection issue I could never solve. When fired you could not eject the cartridge case without pushing the slide forward before pulling back. It was accurate enough but I couldn't get past that ejection quirk.

I had a 30/30, but it went down the road. Rattled.

I never warmed up to them enough to want one. Never owned a pump centerfire rifle of any kind for that matter. On the other hand, an acquaintance owned a 170 that was one of the most scary accurate .30-30's I ever saw. He would routinely get way less than MOA groups with it, using cast bullets. The only .30-30 I experienced that shot better with cast bullets is my M54 Winchester bolt gun, and that wears a Unertl scope for serious group making.

Very cool Stan - I didn't know you were LH. The 170 that I have is a 30-30 carbine model, and it has feeding and ejecting issues. I think the scope mounts are the same as the Remington pumps and autos (742, etc.) if that matters.

Keep your eye out for a 35 Rem - I've heard of fewer problems with them. Which doesn't really make sense, as the 170 was modeled on the Savage/Stevens pump shotguns of the time and should work with the rimmed 30-30 and maybe not as good with the 35. I'm not really sure what happened there.

I had one too some time back. Found it in a pawn shop. It was a 35 rem. in pretty good shape so it came home with me. They had a30-30 also I think in a carbine but pretty rough so I bought the .35 rem. Caught my eye because they resembled my old pump shotgun. Didn't keep it long because it had a habit of feeding multiple rounds out of the magazine tube at a time

I took it to the gun club today and shot it. Performance was flawless and accuracy was very very good.
