I have a Savage 99C, S/N C358206, in 22-250 caliber. I can't se any evidence of a re-barrel.

The S/N puts the gun into 1977. That's technically too early for a 99 in this caliber.

Any ideas?

(This is a re-start from an old thread...no responses there.)

Date is very early 1977, and it's too late for a date code. No ideas, although there's a couple possibilities. Off the top of my head, it could be:

1) Gun for some reason wasn't shipped out promptly, but hung around for a while.
2) Gun was originally chambered for something else, but sent back to the factory when they came out with 7mm08.

Don't know any way of proving anything one way or another.

On page 4 of the 1977 catalog under the listing for the 99C it says 22-250 is new.

My 77 catalog says the same thing.

In fact my 99C in 22-250 with serial number C50XXXX was made only 4 months after yours.

It's fine, it's factory, all good.

Is there any way of even coming close to finding that out, Jeff?

Mad Dog is right, probably not, and he's a certified authority on 99's. I didn't mean to tease you with that question. It is sort of an inside joke about "collectible" 99's. There are 99's that have real collector value, and their provenance can be researched. Post-mil 99's don't have the same archive of records the pre-mil guns do.

Post-mil 99's don't usually inspire traditional collectors, but there are certainly very desirable post-mil 99's, and your caliber is one of them. As has been stated, your gun should be considered factory correct, and many 99 guys would trade willingly to get it.

I guess it could be done if you had the money to pay JC hourly for going through the records from 1977 back till he hits the first 22-250 made but I don't think he'll go for it.

Maybe it's time to enter the computer age and get those records off of paper.

Several years ago there was a website selling 99 barrels in 22-250 and 375WIN that reportedly came from the Savage factory.
Dont remember the outfit, but they sold quickly.

I don't want to open old wounds, so am content that you fellas have it all sorted out. I'll just ask when I have my dumb little questions and hopefully you guys can sort it out. That's the dynamic that makes the forum fun for me, is the back and forth, the interaction eventually, hopefully, leading to the complete knowledge on a topic, at least until next time. grin
If it was all touch a computer button and done, it wouldn't be near the fun would it?
You guys have a great Christmas.

If they were catalogued for 1977, they had to have made at least a few up in 1976 to be ready to ship. No? So first year maybe, but surely not the first one.

That's it in a nutshell. The 110 that I have was made the year before they were marketed. Date code = 16I (1957).

This question originated in another posting. I dated the rifle but said it was too early for the caliber. That was my error...looking at one thing and writing about something else. I corrected it but the question sprung up on another posting and started all over. Rifle/caliber/date are all good...1977.

Merry Christmas to all...
