Just bought my son a 7mm Mag and was curious if Talley Lightweights could handle the recoil.

Thought's?

In a word, yes.

That being said, there are a couple of factors that influence the equation, most notably scope and firearm weight. A heavy scope on a hard-kicking and relatively light rifle can make it difficult for just about any mount. Regardless, I would feel confident running them on any 7mm Mag and not be worried.

Thanks for the input Jason. The rifle is not necessarily a lightweight. It's a Weatherby Mark V Synthetic with a Leupold VX-3 3.5-10.

My pal has had a 3.5-10X leupold mounted in Talley LW's on his 8# 7mm Mashburn for 3 years now and the rig has held up fine for him.

The rings did loosen about a year ago but he tightened things up; it's been fine since.

I have had Talley ltwts on a 300wsm and a 7mm WSM for a few years with no issues.

Not to sidetrack or start any arguments, but I always use a drop of blue loctite on my bases and rings, Talleys included. I had issues with the mounts on a 7mm Rem Mag about 22yrs ago - have used blue loctite since with no more problems, and no problems removing them when I wanted to.

I know many will say no but lapp them

They are not concentric

You will see this quickly after you make your first pass with the lapp

But if your ok pinching or marking your scope tube or your not concerned with ring to ring alignment

Skip lapping

Depends on whether or not you use gorilla torque on them.

Gorilla torque = BAD!

Have not marked a scope yet with Talley Ltwts. I put pressure on them forward and to the bolt side when I'm torquing. That's with a small sample of 20 or so sets between 700's and Montana's. And I have a habit of too-frequently moving scopes amongst my rifles like a dumbazz.

But I ain't too anal about it, either.

the rings are made thin and flexible so they form to the tube. never had Talley LW 'mark' a scope tube.

but to the OP, yes. strong enough. this is .375 RUM #1

Yes they are strong enough. I have them on a bunch of 7's and some 300 RUMs.
They have been beat all over the west and to Alaska. No problems. I lap ours always

They have held up well on my 35 Whelen. No issues at all.

This sounds like the old HuntAmerica site when the owner was hawking Talley rings that don't need lapping. grin

The rings may be straight, but it doesn't mean the base holes in the receiver are. Even dead straight rings are only as straight as the action they are on; they may need lapped.

Anybody who seriously concerns themselves with the adequacy of a Big 7mm for anything we hunt here short of brown bear, is a dufus. They are mostly making shidt up. Crunch! Nite-nite!

Pretty light roy there. My 338 win mag weighs in at 7 3/4 pounds and I trust the Talleys:

My 7 WSM shoots 180s at 3000 fps, which is not too different from the 7 mag. No issues with the rings. But some of the other rifles on this post are true beasts and a better test. I would use them again in a minute.

I get 2972 with 168s in my 7mag. 3k with 180 is really moving.

I have TLWs on a bunch of rigs, the most brutal being an 18oz scope on a lightweight 300WM and the TLWs are holding fine. Don't see an issue.

I agree on the lapping of them, almost every set of mine has needed it. And yes, I marked up some tubes before I started lapping TLWs.
