Does the round have to be fed from the magazine or partially inserted into the chamber?

With my 700s and Howas I can open the bolt, drop in a round (in no particular location), close the bolt and fire. Does the RAR work in a similar fashion?

you have to start it in the chamber or feed from the mag.

As an additional question: can the RAR magazine be loaded from the top while it is inserted in the rifle?

My 243 loads fine if you drop a round into the loading port, tilt the gun slightly to the left, and close the bolt.
