I'm picking up a new Rock River AR, and am debating sight system. My Bushmaster has the C-More Tactical open red dot. It's nice but it's ten year old technology and I'm wondering if there's a better mouse trap out there now. Suggestions?

Unless a guy wants to spend the big bucks and get an ACOG, I believe an Eotech or Bushnell holosight is hard to beat on an AR. I have four and need at least two more. Some of the newer models use AA batteries which last much longer than the N cells mine use.

IOR also makes some unique scopes with Schott glass, T3 coatings, great etched reticles and neat features that fit well on an AR.

I like the ACOG Reflex, which is a lot like my old C-More. The compact scopes are neat, too, but I'm unsure how they would perform in the dark. I know from my Katrina experience that you can use the Reflex type sight with basically no ambient light. It's amazing how dark a city can be when there's no moon, clouds mask the stars, and there is no electricity for a hundred miles. I expect if the new rifle is ever used for serious defense, it will be in the dark, and I'm not sure what the low light ability of those ACOG scopes is, even with the illuminated reticle. Thanks for the link and suggestions, guys, I'll keep nosing around.

EOtech 512 is a great addition to any short barreled AR. Long battery life (F series) with multiple brightness settings. Tough as nails. Can be purchased either NV or not.

I just finished a month researching the same subject. I could not justify more then $300 for an Eotech or ACOG.

I ended up getting 2 Bushnell Gen III holo's with AA batteries. They have a 1 MOA dot inside a 65 MOA circle. The bottom of the circle co-wit's with my BUIS. I love'em.

web page

I've seen abuse tests on AR15.com done with the bushnell mounted on an SBR. The SBR was in pieces while the holo was still working. So I decided I did not need to pay for the extra armor on the Eotech. I'll try to find the test.

Thanks, guys. I would like to see that test if you can find it, Bend. I was leaning toward the ACOG.

Bend,
I just ordered one of these for my Beowulf. I didn't know the AA version was still available from Bushnell. Between my Cabela's Bucks and a 20 dollar catalog rebate it got almost cheap. Thanks for the heads up!

One thing the link stated several times that does not square with the manufacturers claims is the Bushnell is not waterproof. According to Bushnell it is both waterproof and fogproof. I got mine today and the box says so.

The 512 or 552 are neater looking with longer battery life and the armor has a practical purpose, although likely unnecessary for me. But that doesn't leave any flies on the AA Bushnell and this time around I decided it was a good fit for my purposes. Besides, I don't think there will be much chance to get one for long. I heard Eotech is going to sell all the AA sized Holosights and Bushnell is going to carry N and AAA. I had thought all the AA Bushnell's had dried up since no one carries them that I have seen except for the Cabela's link Bend supplied. Interesting thing is, I cannot find AA Holosights through the Cabela's search engine by typing in "holosight". Then they only show the mini and XLP. It's not until you specify "AA Holosight" that it brings that model up.

I don't have either. I just thought I'd pass the link along!

And I appreciate it. My warranty is also a little better. Eotech's starts on the date of manfacture and mine starts on the date of sale: both two years.

A few years ago I bought the Aimpoint ML2 for my Bushmaster Patrolman's carbine. It has a battery life of 10,000 hours that I haven't changed yet. I even found that I had left it on for a few days. I believe the newer models last 50,000 hours! I perfer the 4 MOA dot over the EOTECH reticle. EOTECH is good and a few guys I work with have them. If I had the money I would have an ACOG TA-31!

Hey redog 123 who makes the holster in the picture i am looking fo a set up like that for my Glock.
Also Eothech has no magnifacation, I am planning on the aimpiont 2X because I got old eyes and need as much as I can get. Unless I can find a short varible scope that is worth what they ask for it. I do not intend to go into combat, or even road patrol since I retired. I just want a good optic for shooting Prarie dogs and coyotes

I've got an Aimpoint, which is military standard. No magnification, but it's quick.

It's also a 3 MOA dot. If you want to shoot tight groups, go for a scope.

The Aimpoint has a battery life of something like 50,000 hrs. It's good for close work, but not good for popping varmits at 200 yards.

The ACOG is the choice of a lot, but it has magnification, I think. (doesn't it?) One of them does, and it makes me crosseyed to look through it. VERY good scope though.

And the one with the TV screen is very good. Low battery life, comparatively, but it has a smaller dot and a bigger field of view.

It's hard to go wrong. They're all excellent, if you spend the buck on them. The cheap ones I would trust on a .22 but not on a rifle to which I might have to rely to save my life.

Blinddog1 the holster is a Safariland model 6004. It holds my duty Glock 35 with my Surefire X200 light. I believe they have them for almost every type of Glock. I think I paid around 65 dollars for it a few years ago. Safariland has newer models with better features now. I haven't heard too many good things about the Aimpoint with magnification. Check out AR15.com for good info. on these optics.

You're right Gene L the ACOG's do have magnification. The one model I want has 4X. It does take some getting use to keeping both eyes open but they are the top of the line when it comes to battlefield optics IMO. No batteries is a plus for sure!
