I was reading a newspaper story the other day. It was one of those 150 years ago, 100 years ago, 75 years ago things that some newspapers have. Anyway, it was an article about a lynch mob that was formed to go get a man and how he had to be spirited out of town under armed guard in the middle of the night in order to avoid being lynched by an angry crowd because of his wife's testimony IN A DIVORCE HEARING. This was from 1914.

In a mere hundred years we've gone from a society where moral outrage enough to get a white man lynched over testimony in a mere divorce hearing could be summoned in an afternoon, to one that casually watches the worst violence and depravity imaginable on the Internet day after day with nary a peep or reaction at all other than to stuff another chip into an disheveled mouth.

No, the French might be lots of things, but at least they are vigorous. A French farmer will drive his tractor to Paris and burn a bag of manure on the steps of some government building in a heartbeat. Over here, we'll just turn the channel to the NFL or American Idol.

Not a one of us, my self included, is going to do anything. We have to much to lose. Only when we have absolutely nothing to lose will we do something. Think French Revolution.

I'll throw in one more thing. Recently the French government overreached and passed a very unpopular 75% tax on the highest bracket. Within a year, they are backtracking with egg on their faces and doing away with it.

Our government recently overreached and passed Obamacare with public opinion 75% against. Two elections later, after the so-called opposition party won out because of the outrage, we can't even muster a symbolic vote to repeal it, much less ACTUALLY do anything about it. And of course, we'll fall for it again, and probably again, with the ones crowing the biggest about what they would or wouldn't do in a similar situation as the French find themselves, being the ones telling us to vote for the lesser of two evils and all that mess.

I seem to recall we had at least one investigation here in the U.S. for a "hate crime" or domestic terrorism or... whatever, case over some bacon or sausage being left in the vicinity of where muslims were or might be.
