I just picked up a 308 lsa 55. It came with some original rings that I had never seen before but there was some rust on the screws and in the holes that hold the top half on. I have wd 40 them and the screws and the screws cleaned up well but I can't seem to get all of the rust out of the holes . Every time I put the screws back in the come out with rust on them. Do I just put in some loc title and go with it or can you suggest a way to clean up the holes for good

Try some G96 and work it in there with a little brush or something. Use a straw and blast the guck out. If you do that a few times it should clean up pretty well.

A small wad of oiled 0000 steel wool in the hole. Then take a qtip and spin it on the steel wool with light pressure. Clean out the hole well after and oil heavily.

Run the correct threading tap in the holes with only finger pressure. If severe you could go to larger screws. Tap rings and bases.
If still rusty seal with nail polish or removable sealer so they don't rust weld in place later.

My suggestion as well, combined with Tejano's idea of sealing everything after mounting it up and getting everything straight and eyepiece placement etc. I often use clear nail polish in and over scope screws to not only keep them in place better and to keep water, dirt etc. out of those small orfices. A nice finishing touch to a good scope mounting job.
