I bet somebody stole a collection somewhere and is spending them at face value...
Nice snag.!
I scored a Silver certificate bill once because the gal behind the counter was Positive it was counterfeit. The Blue ink and all.

I was in a local watering hole for happy hour years ago. The barmaid took a roll of quarters out and broke them open to put in the till. As she dumped them in, they made the unmistakeable sound of silver quarters. She became upset as she thought they were counterfeit. I explained the whole pre-64 thing, but she didn't believe me. I offered to take them off her hands. I walked out with 4 rolls of silver quarters for face value. Not like I didn't try.

Thought maybe you found a rare copy of Clint Eastwood's short film.

If I read correctly, the melt value of a silver quarter is at about $3.00.

I watched a whole team of mcdonalds employees gawk over a 'small face' $10 spot the guy in front of me used. The 20something girl had never seen one. J F C

My father was looking for his ball in the woods along a golf course, probably forty years ago, and found two bags of silver dollars, something like 180 of them, altogether. The bags were rotted, they must have been there for years, hundreds of golfers must have walked by them over time...

A friend of mine's father ran coin operated laundries in the 70's, 80's and early 90's, he saved every silver quarter he came across. He has a vault in his basement that has bags and bags of them.

a man was telling my wife to go to the bank and buy $100 worth of .50 cent pieces, pick out the pre-64 and just return the rest for face value.
He told her he gets 1-4 almost every time he does it.
I guess it wouldn't work if everyone did it

I guess it wouldn't work if everyone did it He's missing quite a few if he's "returning all the rest". 1965-70 circulating Kennedy halves are 40% silver.
