I think it would be Leupold's 2.5-8x36. It's long enough to fit on a .30-06 length action but physically smaller than the 3-9x40. I prefer smaller sized scopes. The Leupold 4x33 and 6x36 are also two of my favourites.

I wish I could use the shorter scopes on long or standard mauser actions without cutting the LOP back. Apparently, that isn't a problem for most shooters.

I like my scopes mounted farther back and my pick of the VX-3 litter is the 3.5-10x40 CDS, my VX-2 pick is the 3-9x40 CDS, especially for LA rifles. To me the 2.5-8x36 isn't quite long enough without offset rings/bases, but is OK on SA guns.

Agreed that the VX3 2.5-8 can be a close fit for a LA. If it fits, they work very well.

Another vote for the Leupold VX-3 2.5-8X. It goes well on my semi-custom Ruger '06.

Agreed on all accounts. That is a great hunting scope.

If you don't find the tactical looks of a Picatinny rail offensive, an EGW aluminum rail will allow you the mounting flexibility on a Mauser without having to shorten your LOP.

I used one to mount a Weaver Classic K6 on a Zavasta 30/06. It worked very well for me.

I have to just say Burris. Have 5 of 'em mounted on hunting rifles Two .30-06s, two .270 Win., and a 6.5 Creed. They include a Fullfield 30mm 3.5X10X-50mm with E-DOT LRS, two 30mm 4X16-50mm Black Diamonds, and two 1 inch Fullfield II 4.5X14-42mm with ballistic plex. They are affordable, but not cheap, clear, and hold zero. I have a Zeiss Conquest and a Leupold VX3 in the boxes that I don't use right now. Good scopes but I prefer the Burris. For serious late low light I take the E-DOT for the lighted reticle. Even if you can't see crosshairs that red dot tells where the bullet is going. Dirtfarmer and I hunt together every now and then and he kids me about my Burris scopes.

2.5x8 Leupold....it's been my favorite for quite a few years but I agree,,it can be a little tight on the long actions and sometimes not work.

For a longer scope, I like the Leu. 3.5x10 but I've been looking through a 3x9 Conquest lately and I like that too.

For a budget scope I like the 3x9 Burris fullfield. I have one on a 338 Win. mag for a back up and load work up. So far it's done just fine.

6x42 1" Schmidt & Bender. I have 2 of them and am replacing my Lupy 6x's as money will allow.

Do you inquire of a good man's opinion to simply pass judgement on it?

Tough to choose just one. Recently picked up a Leupold VX-6 3-18x44mm Illuminated/CDS (for a project yet to be completed) and really like it. I have an old Conquest and like it.

But I would have to pick the Leupold 2.5-8 as my best all-round scope.

I had a Redfield Lo Pro on my 7 mag until this month, since 1989? I decided to upgrade it to a Leica Magnus. I also bought a new .308, and put a Swarovski Z3 on it. Have shot both guns with their scopes, but will have to hunt with them to see how I like them, but I figure I will notice a difference, from the Redfield.
