Is that the same process they used on Han Solo? If so, he turned out OK after they thawed him out.

Well, the word is actually Stain…less not Stain…proof. They probably just didn't rust as much as a carbon steel barrel would have.

Probably was a crapload of Cosmoline, like some companies are famous for doing. Looks like rust, and if you run a patch down it you would swear it was rust.

Or, this story is just that, a story.

Or, better yet and more likely, it someone that has close ties to a competition company. They got their panties in a bunch cause they saw how damn well the guns were selling cause they shoot so good. Winchester and Remington can't make such a gun, so they resort to these stories of bullcrap. Must be a top distributor, if they don't even know the name of the rifle model they are stocking.

No ties to any company. Kid had texted me about it and I thought I'd pass it along so anyone buying one would give it the once over, that's all.

Ruger made a 82nd Airborne Special Edition something or other?

Or possibly a Ruger American painted red white and blue with a bald eagle shaped bolt knob, with the buttstock purse specially sized to hold a Big Mac?

I figured they would have a pretty good protectant on them. Cosmoline can look like rust on a stainless barrel too? Honest question.

Not sure if it is actually Cosmoline or some other product. I have seen a few barrels coated with so much of that crud it takes about 12 patches to clear it all. First few look like mud. Exterior of barrels are usually gunked up pretty heavy with it as well. Remington used to do it with shotguns all the time. I don't know why they would bother on stainless. But I doubt one time from going in warm from cold would be enough to be a problem, especially if they were boxed and warmed up slowly. Isn't that the whole point of stainless???? Certainly we need to see confirmation of this and what was done with all the guns.

Junior says they sent them back. And yes it's common practice for the distributor to inspect a sample from the shipment. His company supplies Cabelas, Gander Mountain and thousands of small shops. But as they are not the only supplier, it was brought up as a caution to any prospective buyers to take a look down the bore just to be sure. Just trying to help fellow shooters out. Nothing at all against the brand.

I take every rifle I own and throw them in a snow bank and leave them for about a week. I then retrive them and give them a good thawing out. This is commonly done to prepare for a process known as the (freeze thawed rust lapping process.)

By creating a controlled rust by implementing freezing during the process it creates a perfect environment to then use a process known as CRFL (Controlled Rust Fire Lapping The Barrel) Next you simply fire one round and clean repeating the process 15 times and you are done. The end result is phenomenal accuracy.

It is of my opinion that the freeze thaw rust introduced to the RARs that were shipped was most likely intentional to enhance accuracy. The reason it was made to look unintentional is because the renowned accuracy process CRFL (Controlled Rust Fire Lapping) has not yet been approved by the BFSA ( Burou of Firearm Safety Administration)

Because the process happened during shipment and not it the factory it is thereby considered to be an unintentional shipping accident and is thereby Totally Legal.

Brilliant if you ask me.
