I'd start with a 50s vintage EG or F in .300. It's a perfectly good round and everybody should have an F or EG in their battery of arms.

The man said "possibly elk" for those of you that were not paying attention.

I wouldn't even think twice about taking a 300 Savage or 308 Win with 180's for elk. EG with 24" barrel would be my choice.

Just sayin...

I think the early take down F 99 in 300 savage is my favorite.
But you aint getting my T"s or my solid frame F in 300 from me!
I also have a 30/30 Carbine butt fruitwood H and two 303's one take down and one in Octagon that I love. Oh and my G dumped a bull in its tracks so I better keep it. I guess I got a couple I would sell......oh well.

Wouldn't a .308 be a good starter that would cover the Deer/Bear/Elk in a 1955-60 vintage F, R or EG?

I recently bought my first - a 1950 EG in .300 Savage with a 1" Stith and first series production Weaver K4 ... mostly for nostalgia, to use for deer. I was not considering Elk.

Brush Gun in 358 Win. But I do love the feel of a 50's F.

Better yet, a 99R in 358.

Only problem is that you can't just walk to the pawn shop and grab one, took me 5 years to find mine.

I don't think I'd hesitate to hunt elk with my 250R. After I saw the way it knocked down my wild pig when I shot it in the eye, and elk have much bigger eyes, Joe.

I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.

2's better than 1, 3's better than 2, 4's better than 3 and so on and so on...:)Personally I like a 300svg for them all. Have taken deer, bear with a pre-60 99EG and deer and elk with a pre-60 99R, both in 300svg. But, I wouldn't hesitate to use any of my 99's in 308win either for bear or elk.

Depends on if you're walking or just standing around. If walking I like my G in 300 or if its a really nice day maybe my '77 99/358. If I'm just gonna be standing around then I'll go with my R in 300.

Find yourself a decent .300 EG that's been cut for a kick pad and non-factory drilled for a scope. That way you are not paying any collectors premium for the gun or chambering. Then go out and shoot the living [bleep] out of it! If you like, then you are done. If you don't like it, then you know what to look for in your next 99. That's my advice and I'm stickin' to it.

I go along with Norm. Although I have a 284 and a 250-3000, my 30-30 H lightweight and 38-55 see much more time in the woods. I never feel undergunned with any of them. Just get a 99 and put the bullet in the right place !! They kill !! :):):)

I can't believe it. Grown men asking what something is worth and THEN asking which one should I buy. For cripes sake, take this advice and then YOU decide................

Just the boys having a little fun on a Saturday. Don't think OP ever brought up cost, was just getting a little input from the guys. But its been my experience, a rifle is like a wife.... if you don't like it's shape or the way it kicks you around, get rid of it and get you one that suits.
