Last two deer shot last season was by my buddy and his boy who I took hunting for the day. My buddy shot a doe, bang flop dead about 75 yards with an 06. His boy shot the doe standing behind it bang flop dead at 85 yards with a .30-30. Not much to say about the ole .30-30 other than it works.

I killed my first and only white-tail with my Dad's '94, back in 1966. 3 or 4 years later I killed my first moose with a Marlin 336, since gone to sleep with the fishes via a swamping. I miss that gun!

I'm still packing the '94 on walkabout up here, but that white-tail was my last kill with it (it disappeared for about 25 years before I reclaimed it - cost me a Ruger Blackhawk to get it back).

I really do have to kill something with it again ...... I'm figuring a moose.

I have been using 30-30 bullets in a 308 at 2300 fps, does that count? Yet to shoot a deer with it but I would guess it will kill them just fine and maybe ruin a little less meat.

a lightweight .30-.30 single shot works well, too

I'm still amazed at how my childhood 336 in 30-30 rings gongs at 200 yards with every shot over factory sights with cheap Federal blue box 170s. And it is fun!

Levergun fun is the main reason to own a .30-30.

The cartridge itself doesn't do anything you can't do just as easily with a plethora of other cartridges.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.

A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.
