Several years ago a young friend of mine shot a deer from about forty yards. He was using a 45-70 Handi rifle and did not see the tree between him and the deer. When he fired the deer fell dead and the top section of a two inch tree fell. I'll bet the bullet had quite a bit of expansion on it when it hit the deer.

Stan in SC

The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa.

45/70,it's almost a religion.

If you have to take a second shot then you probably shouldn't have taken the first shot.

New 2 99s

I got a 375 RUM so I do not have that problem anymore.

What happened was he was walking slowly and was just leaving the shooting lane and that was the only tree, about thumb size, and as you see I got it. It deflected the bullet enough that the shot grazed his brisket drawing a little blood and fat. Followed that guy for 3 miles, gps measured, before he ditched me in a cedar swamp.

Wife saw him from the same stand the next year but he stayed back in the woods. She said when she first saw him she thought it was an ELK... She said he was a monster but stayed just far enough in the thick stuff she could not shoot.

The biggest buck I ever shot was a 230 lbs. 8 point I took up by Emily Minnesota. I hit a sapling about 25 yards off the end of the barrel, and the bullet traveled about another 35 yards and hit the deer, breaking it's spine. The entry hole was about twice the size of a normal .30 cal entry wound. Gun was a Model 99 Savage chambered for .300.

That is a Brute of a buck! I'm liking the chocolate antlers too. anyone finding any sheds yet? I'll likely find some today as I start mowing at work, them things are hell on tires!

Side note - went to cabelas last night for the first time in a long time, Little punkin wanted to see the "fishys". made the mistake of peaking in the bargain cave and seeing a pink left handed bow (wife is a lefty) I showed it to her and she wanted to try it out. saw the string was frayed and the bow was missing a part so we put it back on the shelf. she picked up a brand new one (same model) and wanted to try it. after the second shot she gave me that look with a grin that said I can put my stuff away, we found something else to spend money on smile she absolutely LOVES her bow and is anxious to start learning the art of archery. had I known, I would have done this years ago.
she got a regular camo diamond infinite edge with ted nugent pink camo arrows, new release, the whole 9 yards. now we just need some nice weather!

I have the deer hunting bug already, not a good sign

I have it already too Ryan. I feel a little bit like I missed out on something because I didn't even see a deer during gun season.

I'm pretty amped up for this year for a few reasons. The biggest being both of my kids can and want to hunt. I'm not sure my daughter will during the regular season, but she probably will during the youth season when its warmer. Two, I should get a tag in SD, but I'm not banking on that. I'd like it for the venison...I'll have none very soon!

I'm not holding out a lot of hope for this years MN gun season either. BUT, this winter sure is helping out! I'm hoping to get out scouting in about a month. I've been looking over aerial photos for about a month now. There is also a bran spankin new clear cut that I want to sniff out as well. It was just starting to get logged the last weekend of October and it was going full tilt during deer season. I have several spots I'd like to look that we saw while in it on the wheelers and driving the truck down there.

The good news is, there is A LOT more land available to hunt, than I could ever look over or cover, even with the two new hunters. Some of it I just may have to because I drive by it all the time and pick out deer stand sites from the road. grin

He's a big sucker Terry! Biggest I have shot is also an 8pt. He was 227# dressed and it was all I could handle to get him yo an area I could get to with a wheeler! I had to drag him about 2-300 yards to an old tractor road. It took me two hours.

I was going to drag him to a creek to gut out. I pulled him about 10' and realized that wasn't going to work!

Terry,

Do you guys hunt right in the clear cuts? From your pics, the stuff you're hunting is VERY similar to what we're going to be in it looks like.

When you're setting stands, what type of things are you looking for there? I'm pretty new to the open type terrain, though it's tight with "buggy whip" popples, it looks like you'll be able to see if you get up over them? GG can attest to the crap we hunt now. It's thick as dogs hair.

Are you looking for terrain features of any sort?
