I just bought a Tikka T3 Superlight in 270 Winchester and although I have killed a few deer in past years with a 270 I am Interested in which 130 grain Factory loads have really stood out in performance for the 270 guys here on the fire.

I am going to be using the rifle for woods hunting sitting on the ground with shots coming as close as 20 to 75 yards to moving out to the edge of agri fields and hunting out of a ladder stand with a shooting rail to shoot out to maybe 300 yards or so.

I want a load that will at least break a 200 pound plus Bucks shoulder and scramble his vitals at short ranges But will also give good expansion out at 300 Yards and not just a pinhole at this distance.

For you guys that use Factory loads is there one load that will do both ?
OR
I have even thought Maybe one load for the woods and one for the fields.Assuming the POI being close for both loads.
Maybe something on the order of Federal Fusion for the woods and Federal Ballistic tips for the fields?

Much rather have one Factory load that does it all, wish wish

Tell me about your experiences with factory ammo to help me in making my mind up on what to use.

Thanks
Craig

I have the most boring load in the world for woods deer in .270 WIn.. It is about 50 gr of old military powder ( H414) with some old Rem. 130 gr core locks. Boring but effective .

I once bought 10 boxes of Remington 130 grain corelocts for $5 a box on clearance at the local Walmart. They are reasonably accurate, about 1.5moa, and proceeded to take 11 deer with 11 shots. The factory stuff is gone now, so I load 140 grain accubonds over rl22 to do the same job. The accubonds are a bit more accurate, about .75moa, but don't kill deer any deader!

At the range I have found plain Winchester to be very accurate. I have shot only one deer with them, but would not be afraid to use them for all deer hunting.

I normally load Hornady Interlocks with 60 gr H4831sc. But you said factory ammo. I would try the Barns stuff as it is normally quite accurate, expensive, but accurate. Buy a box of 2-3 different brands and see what works best in your rifle.

Winchester Power Points would be my first choice for a factory load. They have always performed very well and have been accurate in all of my rifles.

Most brand name cc bullets work well if your rifle shoots them I've used power points , core locks and interlocks all with similar results . DRT from 15-200 yds

130 Core Lokts will do all that. It's actually a pretty tough bullet.

"Factory loads"

1. 130 Rem Core-Lokt

2. 130 Win Power Point

IME - the Rems are some stouter, the Win are some faster.

Obviously others mileage has varied.

I actually end up doing quite a bit of hunting with factory loads, due to "test" obligations. This year, for instance, about half the big game animals taken were with factory.

Lately I've been very impressed with Hornady's American Whitetail ammo. I've always liked the accuracy and terminal results of Hornady Interlock Spire Points, and so far the AW ammo (incuding .270) has shot accurately in every cartridge and rifle I've tried it in. And the price is right too!

Used Federal Premium with 130 gr. Nosler Partitions this year....paid a 'premium' for the ammo, but it got the job done.

I've tried the Rem, Win, Red Blue box and they all do fine. Have not tried the Hornady AW yet but will. Glad to hear a good report on them.

M D -

I shoot and have shot SO FEW factory loads as to not affect any % of factory sales.

That said, THNX for the update. It's good to know for 'just in case' .

My unreserved recommendation for deer would be the Federal Fusion 130 grain. It will do exactly what you said you wanted, and do it probably more accurately than anything else, and cheaply too.

You're welcome. The American Whitetail ammo is good stuff, and priced right too.

I don't think there are any bad 270 Win factory loads, find the load your rifle likes and fill your freezers, but be sure to put a good old 1" Remington leather sling on it. Magnum Man

My favorite bullet is the Nosler 130 gr BT and IMR 4350

A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

My CLR is an MOA shooter with the Winchester/Olin 130 grain Power Max Bonded, but will shoot nearly as good with the Hornady American Whitetail.
