With the early morning trip to take the mrs. and a couple other nurse's to work on a nice glaze of ice had me wondering does anyone run studded snow tires anymore ? they used to be some what popular around here before 4X4 became the norm.

Yes, and they really do work on ice. They don't do anything in soft snow. I put a set on our van this winter but it's been so warm that they have a total of 50 miles of bad roads. The rest has been bare and wet or dry. We even took a trip to Sacramento over Donner Pass and never saw a bit of slick road.

A while back I read some test results on all season tires. The results showed that they don't do anything that highway tires won't do as well plus they wear out faster. They said to run either highway tires for good life or real snow tires for traction.

I have not used studded tires for over forty years.

The worse thing about studs may be dry road braking.
They tend to act like skates on dry road.

I wouldn't mind having a set on the feed pickup.

It's so icy in places it's borderline funny.

Go SLOW enough on the corners that you don't have to worry about steering or braking. SLOW is the key word.

We do here, the whole family, and many others here do too. They are a saving grace with the bitter cold adding to the compacting and hardening of the incredible amounts of snow we have been having, creating long running sheets of glare ice on the roads.

Some may like them and some may not, but I just feel more secure, and that is worth a lot to me.

Here in the province of Quebec, Canada, winter tires are mandatory on all vehicles registered in the province from Dec 15 to March 15. Apparently after a 15 year study the government decided there was definite proof that winter tires (studded or not) create far less accidents.

No doubt about the studs biting on ice.
On all four tires is better than just two.

I never thought about studs on a front wheel drive rig.

The dry roads are still a concern.

Studded tires are great on ice but if you're going to put them on an front wheel or all wheel drive outfit, all tires must have studs. If you don't, you'll find out very quickly the back and front will swap places when braking hard.

On front wheel drive, you want them on all 4 to help keep the rears from passing the fronts. Most tire dealers won't install just 2 on front wheel drive for liability reasons.

I might not be typing this if it were not for anti lock brakes.
Valentines day two years ago, I had to brake as hard as my foot could push to avoid a stupid truck that pulled out right in front of me.

I'm sure we have all needed to stop fast at one time, or another.

I put studs on my wife's Tacoma every winter. Here in CO where I live ,icey roads on a lot more common than snow packed. If she is out and about I know she will be safe and be able to get around with the studs on. It is unbelievable how many vehicles are out there with bald tires in the winter and get stuck. She can weave around them and get on her way. We stop and help quite a few, but if I see bald tires, I don't even try.

We have studded up Hankook Ipikes on the milf-mobile (XC90). It's mainly a town car where the roads get real icy.. If it were mainly highway, we'd do studless.

Dry roads are noisy, but nothing like skates.

On ice, it's awesome.

We have a set for each of our cars and only install them when we have to. It only takes about 15 - 20 minutes. They are real improvement on ice or packed snow. Since we only have them on our cars for a week or two per year, they tend to last a long time.

Studs are great for icy roads, on all four tires.

A true winter tire is great on snowy conditions, much better than any all-purpose set.

They run the heck out of them around here. The passes east of here get that soupy, chitty, snow that freezes hard and gets slick. Reminds me of the snow in the SE. Mostly sleet and ice.

Of course there is always some dummy that runs them for half a year and never leaves the city. Chews the hell out of the roads.

Definitely used to be popular. I worked at a Discount Tire while in HS and college and studded hundreds of tires each fall. Can't beat them for icy conditions.

half my rigs have studs and half have syped (sp) tread. the syped seem to work on both ice and snow.
