I recently bought my eighth's #1, a 1s in 7mm rem. mag. My wife is now asking how many #1's does a a guy really need. I told her that I don't really know and that maybe that information could be found on the Internet. So maybe you guys out there could help out my wife with that information.

I only own one, but I'd say 3 are needed for the do-it all battery. Any more than 3 would be fluff.
I'd choose .223, 30-06, 375 hh.

I only own one too -- a #1H in 405 Winchester. I would like a #1V in 25-06, and either a 7X57 or a 30-06. You have way too many, and in order to restore peace in your family, I think you should send one to me, and one to T Bone.

Too many?
Easy; two more. Just one more is just right...
My 7x57 RSI too sweet. A match in 9.3x62 seems only natural. Of course, then there'd have to be a lighter RSI... hmmmm.... something in .22 caliber perhaps (a .221 Fireball? That would be veddy nice...).
Then, perhaps, a large bore stopper in .458 Lott. Oh, and a .30-06... have to have one of those.
A .257 Roberts is just a must have for a rifle loonie, of which I am one... perhaps the same for a .375 H&H... and if the .375 is in house, a .300 H&H would make a perfect match...

Well... I have way more than that! And I know I'm not even close to having enough. Although, I am starting to get them or make them in configurations not normally available.
What is your favorite configuration? and why?
You'll get there too, someday. Trust me!

I love them all, but if I could choose only one I guess it would have to the #1S because of the longer barrell with sights and I do prefer the Alexader Henry fore end. If I could have that in a .35 Whelan or 9.3x62 life would be complete

If you're seeing the 9.3x62 light, you'll be JUST fine...
Personally, I crave that 9.3 in an RSI... and one will be mine...

Passed one up yesterday in 45-70 with real nice wood, but someone had shortened the barrel to 18". No sights but a lower power scope. Looked real nice. And it was way cheaper than the divorce would cost if I bought it. ($775 Cdn) I could want that one quite a bit.

The question from your wife in future years may well be "How many #1s do you need in that caliber? DEAR!"
Consider just the 7mm Ruger single shots of someone further along the track than you are, but well behind Grasshopper.
They are all deer guns not just collectibles but each has a distinctive facet that earns it safe space in my house. The 7mm BR is a custom #3. The 7x57 is a one of 150 B model 200 anniversary gun. The .280 B is my first ever and best #1. The 7mm Rem Mag, also 200th aniversary, is in a custom stock that has stunning checkering -- probably the nicest I will ever own. And the 7mm STW is a discontinued laminate SS rilfe and probably my best loooong range rifle.
Oh and the same wife, a keeper too, is around somewhere too. She just gor back from big pen show this weekend. I don't want to know.

Awesome response to your wife - "if it says so on the internet, it must be true..." I would say at least two, because if you're into #1s, you can't own just one. Practically speaking, I would say a person should own three chambered for calibers that would cover one's hunting needs - basically one each for little, medium sized and big critters. After those three needs are meant, the only other #1s a person should own would be those, that for whatever reason, a person simply has to own. That number is up to you, but here are some sample reasons:
- great wood - a unique caliber - a smokin' deal - my friend needs the money - this one is not being made anymore - this one has never been before - my great grandpa (God rest his sould) had one just like it - this rifle reminds me of you, honey, slim, trim and always looks good - of course I want children, can you imagine what these things might cost when they get old enough to hunt? - etc. etc. Anyone have any other good reasons?
Then, when everything has been said and done and a person hits that point in his life that he has some sort of crisis, mid-life, accepting old age, whatever - when some guys get a Corvette, or a $2500 set of golf clubs, or even a new wife, I'm going for that last #1!
