Harry S. Truman, president, 1945-1953.

Any thoughts on Truman?

Obviously pretty honest as he left the White House pretty much broke. Didn't capitalize on the office after he left it. Made both good & bad decisions. In his time he was a 6 on 1-10. Compared to what we have now, he would be a 10+. GW

One of the stories I like, is Harry, and Bess made the drive from Washington to Independents Missouri alone.
No secrete service agents.

One of the best democrats ever and also one of the best presidents of the 20th century.

He should have let MacArthur chase the Norks clean up past the Arctic Circle.

Fat boy Kim would be wearing Eskimo clothes.

My in-laws were from Independence and attended the same Episcopal church as the Trumans. There were a couple of SS agents that shadowed Mrs. Truman, but they blended in and weren't too obvious.

Used to be a penny postcard you could buy that had a cartoon on one side.

One I remember was a saloon scene with one cowboy having been knocked down. The cowboy standing is saying;"Excuse me, I thought you said Truman was raised in Texas, not that he was raising taxes."

He was the last "poor" President our country will ever see.

And maybe the last honest one.

Well organized and no nonsense. Where as FDR was the consummate politician, who was engaging and played people against each other and thought competition within his own team was good, Truman wanted unity with everyone on the same page, HIS page. That's why he canned Mac. Truman had no use for prima donnas. Do your job with a yes sir and a no sir. Don't be a publicity whore.

Would have needed to nuke the ChiComs - not that I have a big problem with that. Had to worry that Stalin might nuke back.

Someone please come up with the quote about either being a piano player in a whorehouse, or a politician?

Funny how two Presidents, TR and Truman, came into their office without specifically trying to. Both did a fine job; better than most.

I believe that to be a pretty good summation

but I don't feel he was the last honest Pres we've had.

I believe Jimmah Carter was honest, but it cost him.

he wasn't a good president mind you, but I do believe he's probably an honest politician, perhaps that's why he sucked so at it. Who knows? maybe Gus

but he ain't tellin grin

I'm pretty certain when we sing our anthem and mention the land of the free, the original intent didn't mean cell phones, food stamps and birth control.

While he was President he threatened to punch a reporter in the nose for implying his daughter Margaret wasn't a good singer.
