Where is the front sight supposed to line up for a correct sight picture?

Thank you

The top of the front sight should line up with the top edge of the insert (ie the top of the U notch).

From there, opinions vary as to where the front sight lines up on the target. For hunting, I aim with the top of the front sight. I also prefer a post front sight, which suits aiming like that. Others, especially using bead front sights, superimpose the bead on the target, aiming with the centre of the bead. Whichever you use, focus on the front sight.

FWIW if given the choice I swap out an open sight like that for a nice big peep ("ghost ring"), which is much easier and quicker to aim with, IMHO. If I was to have an open sight I'd also much prefer a bigger square notch, combined with a post front, and I'd also prefer a sight which was completely flat along the top edge rather than having a narrow insert like the one pictured.
