I've always been real interested in the .284. There's a 99C locally available with about a $750 asking price on it, but it's been there a while.

I really don't like the C variants, but this one kind of intrigues me. What's the going rate for these and are they sought after by collectors?

But even a shooter 99 in 284 can get to $750 pretty quick. And, yes, they are popular.

But things like a cut stock for recoil pad or refinish or reblue can drop the value quick. Bring pictures back.

Here's two recently sold 284's, neither one of these are the "C" model, which usually commands 10-20% less than rotary magazine.

I believe they are more sought after by hunters than they are by collectors.

The first 3 are about right for the condition IMO.

The C with the recoil pad went too high but people chased it up.

An unmodified one for $750 would get my attention - if it really is. You can always offer less which is the wise thing to do on any deal.

If you want a 284 and you like the rifle, $750 is fair. I wouldn't choose a 99C first, but... I paid much more for a 99F in 284 with broken wood but perfect bluing. It got new wood and I hunt it.

Some of the Cs had headspace issues so I would be cautious of that. Don't know if it is that common. Have not heard of the Fs and DLs having problems though.

284win is a great round but very hard to find ammo or even brass at a reasonable price..

I've got a 284 C and it's just a guess because I've never owned one but I figure I'd rather shoot a C in 284 than a featherlight.

Call me a wuss, I don't find F's comfortable even in 308.

I had 2 different .284 Fs and shot both quite a bit. I used 140 grain bullets and it was nicer to shoot than that dam .308!!

If you don't reload, the Winchester/Olin 284 factory ammo is loaded with a 150 grain bullet at approximately the same velocity as their 150 grain 308 ammo. Yes, I know that the 284 is cool and the .284" has a higher BC number and shoots a bit flatter, but the rifles bring a premium price and factory ammo is often hard to find.

I think that the 284 is a reloader's cartridge and that if a guy is going to buy a 284 and plans to shoot factory ammo, he should go into it with his eyes open to the hurdles involved.

Considering the price of factory ammo, a guy should definitely go into it with his eyes open.

Don't think I've seen a box of standard 284 for under $45 for a long, long time.

Almost never shoot factory ammo in anything except shotguns and rimfires, I'm an avid handloader. I have a set of dies already and 7mm bullets, suitable powders, etc. Most of my deer hunting the past few years has been with .30 caliber or bigger using cast bullets, this one would probably get some tree stand time though.

This one has a recoil pad on it, but it appeared to me that the stock wasn't cut to install it. The rifle isn't pristine, but I have scope bases, reloading stuff, etc., so except for coming up with brass, it would be a turn key project.

Think I'm gonna look around and see what I have I'm not shooting much lately and maybe so some horse trading.

I don't shoot the 284 anymore, but when I did, I liked to shoot things with the 140 grain Partitions.

If it has a recoil pad, the stock has almost surely been cut.

The rifle isn't pristine but hasn't been abused either. I think I'm gonna get it, just need to sell or trade off some stuff. The 99 bug bit me pretty hard a few years ago, and I now own several. I generally am not fond of the tang safety ones, but the .358 Brush Gun has it and I've learned to deal with it. Maybe I could get used to the detachable magazine too.

Pretty positive the factory recoil pads came after the 284 was discontinued.
