AMERICAN first. Greater Appalachia for the maps use. Family has been here, from Germany, since the 1760's. Guess I have roots.

Greater Appalachia, but I have traveled all over the east and a little in the west.

I agree with the greater appalachia (culture) going down into Texas. They seem to be good ol country folks minus our $hitty accent.

Unfortunately with that blending the country hasn't fared so well. Only takes one bad ingredient in a recipe to ruin it, aka the turd in the punch bowl.

True.

My point was that regional (cultural) differences, while still present, are becoming muted.

Some of that can be attributed to chain restaurants and box stores.

My kids were all raised in Texas but sound a lot like the folks on the 6 o'clock news.

Kind of fun to read this and think about it. I have lived in all the listed parts of the country and bin in all fifty states. I was born in Little Falls, NY. Moved to Dayton, OH when I was two and lived there for ten years to the day. Moved to Ballwin, MO when I was twelve and left there when I joined the Navy but I never found a place my heart would call home until I moved West.

Well I think on my own, I'm neither conservative nor liberal. What's funny is, all the liberals I know call me a knuckle dragging conservative. As long as I have people like you calling me a liberal, and liberals calling me a conservative, I'll know that I'm in good shape. 'Cause you people all let others do the thinking for you. I can start any political conversation and tell you what you're going to say about it.
lol I didn't say you were a liberal. I said you act and think like a left coaster or Yankee. If you want a label instead of those I'd use "idiot" to describe you. IIRC you couldn't wait to condemn Zimmerman. You think O's right on "Net Neutrality", etc.

A lot of people are ashamed of where they come from due to the collective behavior of a majority of the people now living there. These are the ones that usually attack or mealy-mouth something like this.

I'll say this to the audience in general, it has nothing to do with you Clark. This is just one dude's way of dividing up the country by cultural norms of given areas. Maybe there's something to it, maybe there's not. IMO it's not completely inaccurate. I'm not going to think about it long enough to determine whether I completely agree with it.

Lithuanian / German ancestry so Eastern European stock.
Parents emigrated as DP's to America and landed on the South side of Chicago in a neighborhood made up of similar people. Made a lot of friends with Irish, Italians, Poles and Slovaks besides.
I experienced the change of Chicago from old man Daley to the lesser Daley. There are many lessons to be learned there.
Now I am making my last stand in suburban Chicago and feeling a lot of kinship with that Indian who observed that the Government should put wheels on them so's to make it easier for them to be moved around. Got knows where my kids and grandkids will wind up. There doesn't seem to be much permanency where I'm at... And that sucks

Far West. Currently right below the "s" in the word "includes" but I've lived in Idaho and central Washington too.

I don't remember where I got it. The map is well represented online. Maybe this will work for you.
