I went on a military vet, cow hunt, on the Valles Caldera, a few years ago, and had her hide tanned. It now lays across the back of the couch in my 5th wheel. Beautiful, thick, winter hide. Turned out very soft, and no smell. So far no hair slippage.

A little off topic but related: if you want to tan an antelope hide, be VERY careful with it. If you drag it at all, the hair will come off leaving bare patches. You can pull the hair out in handfuls before you even skin it. I learned that this year. The next one I shoot will be carried to the truck! I really wanted a full pronghorn hide but had no idea they were not as tough as a whitetail hide.

I did one in 2010, euro'ed the skull and sent the hide to RMT in Colorado, took FOREVER to get it back but it's a beautiful, soft, thick hide with no slippage. It resides on a couch in the man cave and has held up very well.
I once visited a place where BBQ was a verb, Canadian whiskey was the norm and no sweet tea on the menu. Hell on earth for a Southern boy!!

When we get ( too rarely) to my remote cabin, the dog certainly appreciates that hair-on moose hide to sleep on (so do my cold tootsies on getting out of bed)
20 years old, and still shedding shamelessly...
The only true cost of having a dog is its death.

If you flesh and salt it yourself, you can get one tanned hair-on for $175 still.

Hopeful thinking on this fall's hunt.
If I earn a bull, then the Euro mount for the skull and rack is a given. However, if it's a cow, what about tanning the hide?
Anyone done this? Thoughts? I had my moose hide tanned. Here's what it looks like now. Don't know why you couldn't do the same with an elk, if you felt like it...
