I have what apperas to be a 99Q...I've never heard of a (Q) 99 but thats whats stamped on the lever boss..It's a .30-30 made in 1936 it's got a 20in barrel and straight stock the front is also straight..it's been in my family for years, I've looked for info but ain't found any..my granddad bough this rifle new so it aint been modified...I see a Q clear as day...
Robert...it looks like a short carbine rifle with a shotgun style buttplate...
Any Ideas???...sorry I can't post any pic's But I can answer questions about it..

Too early for a lever boss code, Savage didn't start them until '49. Could be an inspectors mark?

Hmm... straight stock? Got checkering? Straight forearm and 20" stock sounds like an early 99H, but that'd be 5 years earlier. What's the serial number? XX out the last couple if you want. Course, if you have the wrong year then it could be a couple of other models.

Sounds like a 99H. Not all of the later rifles in that model had barrel bands.

I looks like the second one without the band..Mine has factory sling swivles..of course they don't swivle the front one holds the forearm on..my dad said it came like that but nobosy ever put a sling on it..... serial number is 3853XX no checkering..
nother question is the barrel band a desired feature?? I know where a .30-30 99 is with a barrel band thats in excellent condition..for $499.00 is that reasonable?? RLB

That is odd, the one with out the Barrel band is an early H, the one with the band is a later model H. Boltman, do any of your H's with the pad not have a barrel band? Les

Murrays says the early 99H's didn't have the band, it was added a couple years after introducing them. Course, Rick added on that not all later ones had bands, which was news and new trivia for me.
We're not confusing 1899H's with 99H's, are we? The 1899H didn't have any bands.. And didn't go anywhere near 1936 so I haven't been referring to that one at all. Sorry if I confused anybody.

The only barrel band I had ever seen was $800. 99H. Last gun show. I know, too much. But, I had $1K in my pocket to spend on one last really good firearm before my "first" born comes along this April. Just found out three weeks ago BTW. Well, I thought about the barrel band 99, but ended up getting a new Mark V 06 with a really good scope to go with it. But man that 99H was in good shape and the dealer wouldnt move. I would say it was 90%. 30-30.

Lightfoot,
There is a small dealer here in VA that I see once in a while at shows. Usually has one table, maybe two. Anyways, there is a show in Fredericksburg this weekend. He might be there. Send me a PM with your contact info and I will pass it to him if he is there, and so is the gun. Jeff
