This used .44 was $595 out the door at a local gun shop. It was a consignment piece. I'm thinking, based on what I've seen, $600 wasn't too bad a deal.

Dan, does that one have a square-butt grip frame. They did make a few before they switched to round butt. Either way, you got a heck of a bargain on a great handgun.

-4 should be a round butt. Key word SHOULD. I think you got a deal there.

Gentlemen, I'm embarrassed. The tag in the gun shop said 629-4, but the gun is stamped 629-1 when I open the cylinder. The serial numbers are the same on the tag and on the gun. Looks like it's a 629-1. Is the price still good?

Were you wearing a mask when that deal went down?
You did very well for yourself.

-4 should be a round butt. Key word SHOULD. I think you got a deal there. The first 629-4's were square butt. They switched to the round butt somewhere in the production run. In my opinion, that was the last of the real 629's. I've just never been crazy about the round butt on that gun.

I hadn't looked at any new S&W's for quite a while, the last one I picked up reminded me of my good Taurus.

Had a .45 Colt Mountain Gun a while back with a lock and no hammer mounted firing pin. It sounded tinny when the trigger was pulled. There was an overall feeling that the gun wasn't up to S&Ws standards - or at least, the standards I recalled from my youth.

Having a long memory can be a problem, can't it? I remember the way those old Smith's felt and looked, too.
Makes it tough to lay down the money for a new manufacture.

By the way, I forgot to congratulate you on picking up a fine Smith and Wesson at a good price.
Lately, I've been seeing folks trying to get in the 900 range for an old blue 29.
That's a little crazy, in my opinion.

The first 629-4 models included all the durability enhancements including the changes made to the -3s plus the new rear sight configuration and case hardened hammer and trigger, but still had the square-butt frame. I owned one of those and wish I still did.

Nice revolver. You did just fine. Price around here runs $750-$850 usually.
