Remington standard sporter-type barrels come in two sizes, what we call the sporter and the magnum contours. Both about .660-.670 at the muzzle. The contour difference is in the first 8" to 10" of the barrel. As a general rule most calibers of the standard .308 and 30-06 case head size ( .484" I think) use the standard sporter contour. Most calibers of the belted magnum case head size ( .532" I think) have the magnum contour. The LVSF is the magnum contour as it is the smallest contour that Remington will flute. You should have ordered the standard sporter barrel contour for the 7mm-08 but with the magnum contour you just have more room for air movement to cool the barrel. The Remington varmint barrel contour is about .825" to .850" at the muzzle depending on the length and finish.

Wasn't going to reply to this thread anymore, but...
DickD,
You're right and I got a big confirmation to leave the 7-08 with the Mag Contour stock. I had the option, but was told to leave it as is. All is well now!
I'll order a Mag Countour for my LVSF 17 Rem. All that gun will need is bedding and a trigger job!

DickD is correct for the most part. The difference in taper does continue for the remainder of the barrel beyond the first 7.0" however only .100" over 17" to 17.5" of length.
Remington Sporter 003
Finished Length = 24”
Diameter at shank = 1.200"
7.0" down from shank = .760”
Diameter at muzzle = .660”
Remington Mag. Sporter 005
Finished Length = 24”
Diameter at shank = 1.200"
6.5" down from shank = .860”
Diameter at muzzle = .660”

Dooger, well you already have a stock in hand inletted for a short 700 with a mag barrel channel. You could take the 7-08 out and set the LVSF into it to see how the barrel looks in the mag inlet. Should be the same inlet for both.

Should be the same inlet for both. I know. Thought about that. Not sure the bedding would quite match up though. I was able to catch the stock before it was bedded, but the advice given was to follow through with it. No biggie, just another reason to order the colors I want on the next one. Thanks
