I just had to tell someone!! This was one of life's greatest pleasures that I wish I could bring off more often. It started with leading a troop of scouts on a 6-day white-water float trip. Only one in the troop appeared to be an avid fisherman as he was after trout with an ultralight spinning outfit about every other evening. With 12 kids there was little time for angling on my part, but on the last evening I rigged up, and we went to a short but historically proven and easily waded run above camp. As he had no experience with a fly rod, I would lay out about 2 rod lengths of line straight across, and hand him the rod. He executed 2 to 3 mends and then followed the line with the tip. The first take was a 12 inch mountain whitefish, and he was absolutely elated. Three casts later, he was solid into more substance and lost all the line and about 100 yards of backing in a matter of seconds. After a full 15 minute fight, I tailed a 26-inch hatchery steely we could keep. His return to camp assured there will likely be more fishing rods along in coming years. Will shortly be delivering a framed picture with a retired Silver Hilton included. I'm fairly certain we have a 13-year old fly fishing convert on our hands. 1Minute

Deschutes in north central Oregon- a tributary to the Columbia. First summer runs show up in mid July, but the real run starts around the first of September.
