I am new to the site as well as Muzzleloading! After some research I have decided on the CVA Accura V2 for my first muzzleloader. I would love some suggestions for powder and bullets that have been successful for you guys from this rifle. I will hopefully be heading to Colorado for Elk this fall and need to get some serious range time in. Only loose powder allowed down there, and no Sabots. Thanks!

for elk?!!

White hots are not legal and a 295gr powerbelt is not a good choice. Duckduckgoose, I'll reply to your post over on my forum but what ever you do, do not use a 295 powerbelt!

Bigblock knows CVAs well, so you will probably get good advice there. I think it is worth the cost and effort to switch out your breechplug and shoot BH 209 powder. If not, either pyrodex or ffg 777 will probably shoot well in your gun but will require more frequent and thorough cleanings.

Bullets: I totally agree that the 295 powebelt is just not the right choice for elk. In a perfect broadside shot slipped through the ribs, probably fine, but otherwise: lost elk. There are just too many other better bullets to use than that one.

I suspect Bigblock will steer you toward Thors, and that would be a great choice. All copper, barnes type bullet packs plenty of punch for any elk walking. I would also recommend trying them, and if they shoot accurately, you won't find a better elk bullet. Since they are only available from one guy and sometimes he runs out before the season, you might look at others as well.

Another good choice would be No Excuses 460 gr bullets. You don't need big powder behind that and 90-100 gr is more than adequate (I use 90 gr of BH 209 for elk) They will pack a wallop

Don't get caught up in the 150 gr "magnum" mentality. You rarely need more than 100 gr of powder to kill an elk. Using more just costs money and makes lots more unnecessary recoil. I have never used more than 110 gr of powder for elk and that was with pyrodex. I now use 90-95 gr of powder.
