Not a MN but 2 Mauser 98's in 9(.358)x57. In old 50's and 60's manuals there is data for the 9x56. Lyman #42 manual lists, for example, 40-45gr I-4064 w/200 gr. and 38 to 43 gr. w/ 250's (both loads indicate .358 bullets!). Make sure of the groove dia. of yours before loading. I have used 9mm pistol bullets in mine to fire form cases, accuracy is not the greatest but it goes bang and kills ground squirrels. You can also just use 35 Rem data for starting loads. Muddy

If you can find some W-W 8x57 cases the 9x56 is pretty easy to make from these. You will want to slug your bore as the 35 cal bullets may be a little big. Mine uses a .352 dia bullet. Made a swage to size 35 cal bullets down and seemed to work well.

I believe Ken Waters Pet Loads contains some info on the 9x56 m/s.

Hey thanks. Looks like I'll have to get some dies made up by RCBS. My uncle eho was in the See bees brought it back after WW2. He gave it to mt in the late 60's. I have 3 rounds that were in the trapdoor buttstock.

Looks like fun with some cool family history. Can't beat that!

The dies I've got were made by C&H and I believe they were a semi stock item.

Twin, I would look around for dies before I called RCBS and had some custom made, C&H probably has em in stock. I use a Redding 9x57 FL die and a 35 Rem seater. As to brass 8x57 may very well not work as the case head is .469 and the 8x56 dia. at the base is indicated to be .464 in the Lyman book. Very nice rifle-Muddy

That case head thing is why I mentioned the W-W cases, they run a little small.....

Looks like CH DIE SET is $82. Not too bad. Thanks for that info. I will see about availability of WW cases.

I have 3 rounds that came with the rifle. The rim diameter is .463. The cartridges are stamped 9mm MS. Specs for the 9mm x 56 Mannlicher-schoenauer is .469. So I am not sure what is going on. My cartridges measure 2.204 without bullet. 2.217 is what a 9x56 Mannlicher schoener should be without bullet. My OL with bullet is 3.060.

You might want to do a chamber cast out of curiosity....

For what it's worth, a fire formed case at the base/not rim is .465 on the nose. Length of case is 2.206. Over all length with a 250 Hornady RN bullet is 2.995. The above is using resized and trimmed w-w 8x57 brass.

Twinray- I was given a dozen nice looking 8x56 Mannlicher-Schoenauer cases over the weekend. They look once fired. If you can use them to make 9x56s, let me know and I'll send them your way.

I bought a MS 1905 in 9x56 about 7 years ago. I first ordered some ammo from a custom. Shop made from reworked 30-06 cases with 250 grain 358 spire point bullets. They cycled and chambered but after firing had sticky bolt lift. Not wanting to damage the gun, I ordered a set of CH dies to load my own. I tried using reworked 30-06 brass but the bolt would not close on the case. I blued the cases and found the base diameter was too large. I went to Quality cartridge web site and was able to get some 8x 56 brass they had in stock.I loaded them with a mild load of 3031 powder and Speer 200 grain round nose bullets. Cartridges cycled and chambered fine but upon firing I still had sticky bolt lift. I slugged the barrel and found it to be 354. I ordered a staging die in 353 size and sized 5 bullets. After seating they came out at 354. I loaded and shot the. Finally succes.. I loaded 10 rounds with ladder loads and went to the range. I found d the starting loads at 1730 fps were shootung a 3.5-4 inch group. I had a load that chronoed at 2100fps that grouped right at 2". I then loaded 50 rounds and went hunting. These are classic firearms and well worth the trouble to bring them back to life.I have taken several deer with it so far and absolutely love it. I am a still hunter and this rifle excellent at jump shooting as the gun mounts and points like a fine British double. It hits with authority and shoots minute of deer. Good luck and happy hunting.
