LOOKING FOR A QUALIFIED VOLUNTEER:
A great cause desperately needs your help. But be assured, this is not a plea for a donation of funds.
Perhaps you have heard of my campaign in the cause of temperance. For the past twenty years, I have been making annual tours throughout this great land to warn the American people about the sordid evils of drink and dissipation.
On these tours, I had the good fortune to be accompanied by my friend and assistant, Mr. Clyde Lindstrom. Clyde, a young man from a fine family and with an excellent educational background, was a pathetic example of a fine potential that was ruined by excessive indulgences in whiskey, gin, and rum — not to mention beer, wine, and women.
Clyde appeared with me at the lectures and sat dejectedly on the platform, drooling at the mouth and staring dissipatedly at the audience through bleary, bloodshot eyes while I regretfully pointed him out as an example of what drinking could do to the body and soul of one of our finest young men.
Unfortunately, Clyde died during my last tour. A greater devotion to any cause is not possible. His all-consuming struggle with alcohol must not be allowed to go unrewarded! Clyde's untimely death has strengthened my determination to remove these intoxicating fluids from the long list of deadly temptations in our society.
BUT I CAN'T DO IT ALONE!
A mutual friend has highly recommended your group to me. Would it be possible for you to put aside your duties temporarily in the cause of temperance and take Clyde's place on my four-week Intermountain West tour, starting the 15th of June next?
Yours for temperance,
Calvert Fitzgerald
