A guy attempted to really screw himself up when he about went over a cliff in Lewiston, ID. He was saved only by a chain link fence...and a mystery man who pulled him out of the car then disappeared. They don't say who took this pic but it appears to be of the actual rescue.

[Linked Image] LEWISTON (AP) | Police in Lewiston, Idaho, says a mystery man pulled a driver from an SUV dangling over the lip of a canyon, then vanished.

The Lewiston Tribune reports that police say the rescuer apparently appeared as the GMC Yukon's front end hung over the canyon edge after a Wednesday crash, broke the passenger side window with a rock and pulled the driver through the window to safety. At that point, police say a chain-link fence was the only thing preventing the vehicle from crashing into Bryden Canyon.

As police arrived, Officer Eric Olson says the rescuer, "said he had to go, and he left."

Witnesses say the SUV was moving fast when it left the road, drove through a yard and over two terraces before getting snared in the fence.

The 23-year-old driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital.

The rescuer probably may have an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

Or just doesnt want the attention from doing a good deed.

It says he went through a yard and down over 2 terraces. That's a residential area. If it wasn't for the fence, he'd be getting a ticket for littering.

Looks like it was shot with a pretty decent camera. Better than cell phone quality at least. How big is that canyon?

That was my first thought - where is the guy with the camera standing (looks like he's suspended out over the canyon).

The expressions on their faces doesn't seem right either. Looking on Google earth I can't figure out where it happened, but I've never been to Lewiston so I don't have a frame of reference. Out by the airport maybe.

Not accusing anyone of making this up. Just some oddities for me to look at while things are slow here at work.

LEWISTON, ID - The Lewiston Police Department has identified a passerby who pulled a 23-year-old Lewiston man out of his vehicle after it crashed on a cliff above Bryden Canyon Road yesterday morning. According to Interim Police Chief Roger Lanier, when officers arrived at about 8:00 a.m., they discovered a 2000 GMC Yukon had driven off of Mayfair Drive, through a yard, over shrubs and trees, and then came to rest against a fence on the edge of the cliff.
"By the time the first officers had arrived a passing citizen had pulled the driver, 23 year old Mathew Sitko from the vehicle. The citizen was not identified at the time due to the chaos of the scene," Lanier says in a press release. Sitko was transported to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.
That passerby has been identified as 29-year-old Jason Warnock of Lewiston.
"When contacted Warnock told officers that he had observed debris in the roadway while travelling up Bryden Canyon road then noticed the vehicle hanging precariously above the cliff face. Warnock said he ran up to the pedestrian foot bridge, climbed up above the cliff face then traversed the embankment to access the vehicle. Warnock said he attempted to break the passenger window with this Leatherman tool but was unable to. At that time he was able to calm Sitko enough to have him roll down the window so he could pull him out of the window to safety. Warnock said he was working at the time and was not able to remain at the scene after officers arrived. He said he was also trying to avoid attention," Lanier says.
Lanier adds that the Lewiston Police Department would like to thank Warnock for his quick and decisive actions in helping Sitko and preventing the situation from becoming worse.

Bet he's glad they didn't take the bid from the chink chainlink maker on that job.

May have been a bit of creative licence with the rescue pic...

Lewiston police officers talk to the driver of the SUV hanging precariously on the edge of a 20-foot drop onto Bryden Canyon Road, where it was stopped Wednesday morning by a chain-link fence.

Well there you have it. Totally true, but slightly inaccurate in the first account. Google Earth show it as an approximately 30' high rock wall above the Bryden Canyon Rd. It would have sucked to go over it, and had a good possibility of being fatal, but he wasn't exactly suspended over the grand canyon. And the rescuer didn't break the window with a rock, the driver rolled it down for him. I like the rock story better.

Lewiston sits in the bottom of the Snake River canyon where the Clearwater river converges with the Snake. There are lots of very steep, deep side canyons along it. Many houses are built on the edges of cliffs like this. Looking at a topo map, it's impossible to tell exactly where this happened.

I can say this with some certainty - if the fence hadn't been there, a rescue would have involved a body bag instead of a good Samaritan.

It was on Bryden Canyon Road.....
Which runs from CCI (rimfire maker) to the Airport.
