Posted this in the kids forum and thought I would share it here, too. Tried last year, but never could seem to get Layne set up in the right place at the right time for a shot. Tonight my wife (who is the turkey guide in our family) took the kids out for a hunt and this time Layne got his chance. Bird was around 17# with a 4" beard. Not huge, but not a jake, either. Will be good eating! Definitely a proud little guy, Grace was happy to be there to see it happen, and Mom was happy to have helped make it happen!

Congrats. I was 22 before I killed my first one and remember it vividly.

My nephew (and brother in law too for that matter) got his first turkey Saturday as well. Neither had ever been turkey hunting ever. Bought a decoy, bought a call. Saw some in the field, set up the decoy, made some calls and here they come running in gobbling and strutting. I told them it ruined their lives, now they'll think they always react that way.

How's the moisture out that way and to the west? Wondering for the November bird seasons.

Nice. Congratulations to the young man.

I killed my first turkey in my mid 30's. I wish someone had started me that young like you are doing with yours and I have done with mine.

Thanks, guys. I will relay your congratulations to Layne and to my wife for the guide work. Fun for me to see them share that experience together even if I wasn't right there with them.

Cheesy, we've actually had a couple of nice rains right in this area the past two weeks. Not sure about farther west, but we've had 1 1/2"-3" with a little more in some areas. From reports I heard this past season there were a few more birds around this year than in the past 2-3 years.
