I was thinking about either the 16" 5.56 or the Predator 22" .223 Ruger American Rifle. Thinking it'd be cool to have the chamber Improved at some point. My question is, will it feed in the American Rifle Magazine without extensive modifications to the mag? Would it feed through one of the already modified models to accommodate longer bullets (75 A-Max)?

Full disclosure; I don't have an RAR yet. However, IMO the RAR rocks because of the 1-8" twist and great accuracy for CHEAP. Sending an RAR to have the chamber punched out screws up your coin/return ratio. Secondly, the biggest .223AI slut on the whole interweb (Big Stick/Boxer)left his RAR chambers alone and wisely spent money on the magazine mod. That's your answer AFAIC.

Those attributes are exactly why I'm looking at that rifle. As far as sinking money into a cheap rifle goes, I came to the conclusion that sinking $200 into a re-chamber job on an accurate $400.00 rifle didn't make any less sense than re-barreling an inaccurate $500.00 rifle.
I also have an AR, therefore, there's already a little .223 brass and a few small rifle primers laying about, whether I went AI or not.
I'd definitely spend the money on the mag mod. High BC bullets and their benefits on the cheap is what this project would be about.
I did notice that Stick left his chamber alone. It also looked as though he had the ranch rifle. A 5.56 throat with the chamber punched to A.I. could be another interesting subject.
I'd be curious as to why he didn't go A.I. He's never struck me as one to do/not do stuff without a reason.....

IT&D might be able to do the rechamber for quite a bit less than $200. The one they did for me on a Remington has worked out fine. http://itdcustomgun.com/id4.html

I think that the critical component impacting wildcatting the RAR is the magazine. Mauser-style staggered magazines are easy and forgiving, rotary magazines, like the Savage 99 and Mannlicher-Schoenauer/Steyr not so easy or forgiving.

Purty easy to tell who shoots and who don't,if only as per always. The 16" 5.56 is a piece of fhuqking schit,as compared to the S/S Compact. No matter the platform, throat geometry, twist rate and COAL latitude are the pulse of the rifle. Linda Lovelace herself, would be jealous over what the 5.56's throat will swallow, less a kiss. The Compacts are spot on,in comparison. Add the inherent benefits of S/S and it's a slam fhuqking dunk. Even with Plug & Plays a 75A-Max won't begin to kiss a Rancher. The Compacts will kiss wayyyyy beyond square via same, with generous land chasing ability. Now the issue with punching the 16" 5.56 is well beyond obvious, for them with a shred of sense. That being,to clean up the Lovelace +P+ Throat and setback, would keep the finished spout shy of 16" and such things are of less than zero interest to me. There are no mag "issues". Despite the naysayers, going 22-250AI or 250AI(amongst a host of other jaunty non OEM designs) in a Salvage 99,is a fhuqking breeze, just as is going K-Hornet in a 77 Ruger OEM rotary mag. Read that again. Now one more time. The Compacts are PRIME fhuqking candidates for going 223AI and if you want a shorter spout,it's hardly "daunting" to shorten same to suit, after the setback and punch out. You've been led to water. Thank me later.

Boxer,
I had known about the Compact Model, but yours looks different from the one on Ruger's website (green stock vs. black). It's 18" tube makes more sense (I was thinking the compact was a 16" as well, then looked again).
I had forgotten about the setback (it'd be my first AI) which would put a 16" barrel under 16", which I wouldn't care for either.
I was not sure how the 5.56 chamber would play in; not well, apparently. My AR does well with the 5.56 throat, but what I run through it and 75 A-Maxes are two different animals.
My main concern was feeding AI rounds out of the rotary magazine. Those concerns have pretty well been put to rest. Even with a regular chamber, the more I read, the more it seems like a whole lot of gun for the money.
Now that I've been let to water, I'll just save a little green and take a drink. Might even have to try one of those Super Chickens you're so fond of. Those seem to get pretty rave reviews for the money (from you and everyone else that owns one and posts about it).
Many Thanks!!!

Schitty boolits require a longer throat than good boolits,at like COAL. Read that again. 1000 words,in 7mm. More water and Burris glass. Laffin'!

If a person had the stumpy model and wanted to set it back and AI a flash hider/mount for a can could be permanently welded on to meet the OAL of +16" requirement.
