I do a lot of flyfishing for largemouth bass here in East Texas and have been killing them with a rather non-traditional "fly"

Take a gold aberdeen hook (about a 2/0 or 3/0) and thread a 3" to 4" Zoom Lizard on..

I know the plastic lizard isn't really a "fly" but works perfctly on a 9-weight rod.

Toss in near a grass line.....it sinks VERY slowly.....and every now and then just "jiggle" the rod tip. When the sinking stops glide it forward 12" and shake a couple of times.

Big bass can't resist.....and super-size bream are suckers too.

Rigged weedless, the lizard will go through the thickest grass. Normally you will see the line "twitch" or move to the side when a bass takes it.........however, if it just stops and feels snagged, it may also be the bass of a lifetime so set the hook with a sweeping motion.

I didn't and had a bass estimated at 10+ pounds spit the lizard back at me (I've caught others up to 8 pounds an this one was MUCH larger).

Just an idea.........may be cheating a little, but it is still a fly rod.

Try a 3 inch strip of rabbit hide, hair dyed green, with a deer hair head like a Wooly Bugger over a tiny brass bullet head. Same effect as the Zoom Lizard, and it's kosher.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who throws plastic on a flyrod. A 4" worm, unweighted, is one of the most effective techniques I have ever used. I don't mind not being kosher; I like fishing with a flyrod.

Want to try something really non-kosher.........tie on a wooly bugger type flyand dip it in a commercial catfish dip bait. Drift this near a logjam in the river and hold on. You haven't lived until you tie into a 10-12 pound blue cat on a fly rod.

Do you have a specific brand of commercial catfish bait in mind? I would be happy to give it a try. I have caught a channel cat or two on a wooly bugger while fishing for bass, but have never targeted catfish specifically.
