Sometimes you don't want to shoot somebody, sometimes they are walking the line and you can only dish out a solid ass beating...
Sometimes, heck...you just don't want the attention.
My grandfather was a plumber, huge, barrel chested man with canned ham sized hands. But, he always had a large 2' pipe wrench behind the seat.
My preference is a 12 pound sledge.

Either could be viewed as a deadly weapon if used against a human being. If attacked by an aggressor w/ a weapon or displaying a marked disparity of force you might as well shoot them. Attack me w/ a pipe wrench and I will shoot you in the face. How would you justify giving someone an "ass whuppin" w/ a pipe wrench?

Funny, I guess, but unless it is one of the following, it isn't a deadly weapon in these parts:

1. A weapon of mass destruction
2. Any weapon from which a shot, readily capable of producing death or other serious physical injury may be discharged
3. Any knife other than an ordinary pocket knife or hunting knife
4. Billy, nightstick or club
5. Blackjack or Slapjack
6. Nunchaku karate sticks
7. Shuriken or death star
8. Artificial knuckles made from metal, plastic or other similar hard material

We call pipe wrenches, and framing hammers "dangerous instruments".

Unless you work a specific profession requiring that to be in your vehicle, it will very easily be termed a lethal weapon if used to attempt an "ass whoopin'". Also, with a melee weapon as heavy and unwieldy as a 12# sledge, you'd better hit on the first swing and best not have more than one other person involved, or you're quite likely to find that sledge handle up your ass.

I recently started driving my 72 ford as my day to day and it doesn't have the storage compartments like the Toyota.
I was forced to move 20 dollars worth of car wash quarters into a wool sock, tied off so they don't spill out.

Handle from a single bit axe. Use the flat side for attitude correction or the rounded edge if you want to break something.

Buddy of mine had a loudmouth coon hound, always rode in the truck with him when he went into town. he called it his hillbilly car alarm. You could hear that dog 4 blocks away if someone came near his truck.

No schitt, that was my thoughts as well. Why would anyone choose to use 12 lbs of dead weight as a defensive choice? If I was forced to use a hammer my choice would be a 16oz claw hammer me thinks.

Some years ago here a cop pulled over a young woman for some traffic offense. She had a Shepherd in the back. She reached behind her, opened the door, and sicced the dog on the cop. She was greeted in court with a whole bunch of assault type charges. I don't recall what the cop did about the dog but it was years before the dog shooting trend started.

That'd be a real bad idea.
