I have wanted to build a 416 Howell for awhile but was put off by the $2.00 each price for the 404 Jeffery. I have looked at the 375 Rem. Ultra Mag case and it appears possible to base the Howell on that case at about .60 each.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Don

That was my exact plan when I got Ken's original reamer from him.

The trouble is, the 404 case is 0.540" dia at the case head, and the ultramag case is 0.550" dia at the casehead. So, the ultramag case is really too large in dia to use in a 404 based round, unless the chamber is cut larger.

There is another wildcat series you might want to look at that is a std length based on the UM case, and in 416, 458 and 475, the AR. http://www.weaponsmith.com/AR-rounds1.html

here's some more information on the AR rounds.

Ken and I discussed these, just about the time I got around to actually building the first rifles with them. Conceived on Oct 12, 2005, all three rounds in shooting guns on 12/30/05 ..
