Grandson accidentally used strait gas in an old Lawn Boy 2 cycle mower. Piston is free, but no go. Assumed the engine is hosed and I just need to recycle the deck(Al) and call it a day.
PS the accident part was my fault...go ahead I can take it.

You are doing better than me...

I had two idiots cutting line feed one of my commercial grade Stihl chainsaws straight gas and run it 'til it locked up.

I was pissed. mad

Depending on how bad the damage is, it could as simple as a new piston and ring and a quick hone to the cylinder. If the bearings show any color from over heating I'd say it's a goner, but it's worth giving it a once over.

Your piston will probably look like this

What model mower? Generally those 2-cycle Lawn Boys are collectable and can be parted out for a lot more money than scrap.

Just some examples: Lawn Boy

My dad owned an Oklahoma Tire & Supply store that I grew up in. Sold a lot of Lawn Boys.
They were good mowers.

Good memories

We had an early 80s model 2 cycle Lawnboy when I was a kid in the that was tough as nails. I tried to kill the darn thing and it wouldn't quit.

I would be inclined to buy whatever parts are necessary and rebuild that engine.

2 cycle mowers are much lighter to handle than the 4 cycle stuff, and thanks to the environazis, no one makes a 2 cycle mower any more that I am aware of.

I had a Lawn Boy a friend gave me that sat underwater in a flood for 2 days. I dumped the gas and changed the plug and mowed with it for several years.

Probably doesn't have enough compression to run. Like 458 says, you may need a new piston and rings.

I have an old one that I was just thinking about. Pretty sure it needs a set of rings to rejuvenate it. It wasn't run without oil in the gas, but it has a huge amount of hours on it in the last 30 years. Still runs ok if you can spin it fast enough to get it started, but the power is lacking.

Lawn Boy --
We had two stroke dirt bikes and whatnot --
One day I was out of the regular premix so I made up some race formula with Castrol. Dad comes out -- "Smells like Race Day!"

Yup the smell of castrol brings me back to kart racing. Still haven't had a chance to fire up the current engine I have in my old kar.

Pretty crazy to be getting over 30 hp out of a 100cc engine and turning 20,000 rpm.

Pop the jug off. If it is scuffed, some muratic acid will wipe the aluminum off the bore. Stuff a new piston in and be sure to gap the rings. I don't know the bore size, but if you can find out, the gap measurement is easy to find.
