I got a new catalog in the mail today and they listed propane powered outboard motors from a company called Lehr. Anybody know anything about these? 'Never heard of them before.

Probably very low horsepower engines, based on propane-powered ice augers.

2.5 to 25hp Could be great for a little Gheenoe, square back canoe, etc... that you may be removing the power on a regular basis. http://golehr.com/

So if these run on propane, there'd have to be oil in a crankcase, right?

Whether it's the crankcase or drive, I'm hoping there's oil in it somewhere

I looked at these before deciding on a gas motor. They are exactly like 4 stroke gas outboards, except they run on propane. The small ones just take a screw in bottle like a Coleman stove or lantern. Problem is, nobody discounts them, so they cost 15-20% more.

Sounds like a solution in search of a problem (except maybe in CA ). You can get gas/oil at or very near any lake. Plus a two stroke has a much better power to weight ratio.

You can't get fuel on any lake here.
Buddy bought a 2.5 hp at West Marine for the canoe at his camp. Everything there runs on propane so he figured what the heck. Runs decent but is hard starting in cold weather. Overall he likes it. I have been in the canoe 2-3 times and it trolls well.

How long will a 2.5hp run on one of those small propane bottles?

Not sure if you are asking me but my buddy told me about 45 minutes to an hour at full throttle and a couple to maybe 3 hours at trolling speed. His 2.5 has a place to attach a 1 pound bottle and a connection for larger tanks.

I'm sorry, but if I had a propane powered boat, I'd have to name it the "SS Boomhauer".
