Have a ~27lb. 2 year old and am looking for, or info on packs to carry kids for hiking or general site seeing.

If anyone has one that their kids have out grown, or have any recommendations on brands/models to look into or stay away from, I'd love to hear. I looked into the kid subforum and used the search function but not much turned up. I know lots of people hike with their kids. Thanks for looking.

I've played this game before. And welcome to the Campfire.
Deuter, Kid Comfort II. Is the best I could find. Rated for 50# but its built to haul more than your knees can. Great hip belt. Shoulder straps are well padded and comfy. Everything about it has been top notch.

Thanks Les. Will be going to a couple local stores with wife and kid to try them out. Wanted to get a little first hand knowledge from actual users before I step foot in the stores.

I've got of these, while we didn't use it as much as we expected, it was excellent when we did. This was the most adjustable, seemed to be the most stable on the back, and on the ground, and we had zero issues with quality and zippers. The kick stand worked well when sitting it down, and during the loading of the child.

We used it most when she was one into the twos, by then, she had become a good trooper on outings where we walked a bit.

Our daughter is now 40+ pounds, and we had her in it for an outing of several miles a couple weeks ago, where we expected her to be tired out before the end of the day.

It still fits her, and is very comfortable to wear. She lasted much better than expected, so not much need again.

We had a Kelty. I don't remember the model.

I think we gave $200 for it. Carried two boys in it and sold it for $150 when they were old enough to carry themselves.

If you have a local store that carries them, try one on and carry the kids around the store while you are shopping.

Welcome to the Forum,
We have a backpack that my sister in law used with her kids (in Switzerland). I can't remember the brand, but it was confortable enough to haul my then 20lb son up and down the Colorado Sand dunes, Arches National park and some short hikes in the Grand Canyon. It does not stand on its own like the Deuter shown, and I am sure technology has advanced they first got it (her kids are now teens).
If there is an REI nearby try some with your kid loaded up and as tdd4570 has suggested. Not all models will fit everyone.

We used Tough Traveler with three of our children taking them to zoo's, picnics, parks, Friday night football games, and long hikes. Backpacks are great but make sure you get a good one that fits you correctly.

Ringwrom- I'll show Calvin (the participant) and ask him which one he likes the best. Hell, I could have my pistol on one side and kid on the other. Thanks for the laugh. Those would be cheaper though..... I could hear myself now, "OK, time to get in the grocery sack. STOP whining".

Thanks for the replies. Time for research.

My kids are 26 and 30, grandkids are 2,4, and 7. We bought this when my youngest was pretty small. Still using it and have loaned it out to friends.

The Deuter pack (not child carrying) I had was well built and was sized a M/L.

I think Deuter meant for Medium/Large hobbits.

Very short in the torso length.

boy that brings back memories. My daughters are 25 and 30 but I used to pack them up and down our river bluff hills 4 miles to the babysitter for prep for hunts. Can't remember the brand of pack we had

Deuter Kid Comfort 2. Packed a 3 year old all over Maui and multiple trips around the OKC zoo. Pretty happy with it.

Looks like the a couple brands keeps coming up with good experiences. I could just make him walk, but those little legs are so short. Takes 10 minutes to walk the 75 yds into daycare.
