I posted a similar thread on the Campfire but it should have been here so if you've seen it, my apologies but I figured it would generate more discussion here smile

Picked up this beaut at Cabelas' last week. Had a great time selecting the rifle and caliber. They had four rifles lined up for me, this one in 450NE, a 500NE, a 470 and a 450/400. I had in mind to get the 450/400, but instead went for the 450 as it was the grandaddy of all double calibers (smokeless era), real nice wood and the best factory target. It's an Italian made Sabbati and at a reasonable price. Lots of good write ups over on AR, plus the guys at Champlin had nothing but good things to say about it. So now I have a THREE rifle battery to worry about when I go back, the 1895 in 405, this one and now a third for PG and just in case I need to make a longer shot so I'm thinkking my 375 Model 70 which I've used to make shots as far as 350 yards. Anyhow, took it out and shot it and after three two shot groups I can hit dead on @50 yards.

Looks very nice on the outside! Hows the lockwork look on the inside?

I LIKE it, a lot! NO conundrum, leave the 405 at home. Congrats on getting to go again, might be a while for me.

Way cool rifle Navair guy. JJ Perodeau at Champlin has been trying to talk me into one of the little 30-30 Sabbati's. He is very high on them and he is one of the two or three people in the country who I trust with a double rifle. He just finished putting claw mounts on my little Sodia .375 double and the range results were spectacular. Will post in another thread.

If you have buff or elephant on your to do list next trip, bring that rifle.

Very nice Jorge. I agree with Safariman... I would leave the .405 at home.

The real question is, are you going to shoot the off the shelf Hornady DGS/DGX or try to regulate with some other bullets??

I have to take the 405, I'm a man on a mission and in Tanzania I can shoot two buffalo smile. So far I've only used Hornady ammo as that is what the rifle is regulated with but as you can see, I have a bit of a crossover issue, but I do plan to reload for it. Putting together and easy Christmas list for the family: dies, brass and bullets!

Jorge,

Personally, I can't really see the conundrum - take your new double and your M70 for PG. If you were hunting Lion (you know, because of the TR "Lion Medicine" thing), then I'd say take the 405 Win. Maybe next time? Anyway, I'd pick some of the 360-gr. North Forks up and see how they regulate. Have you asked for a consensus over at AR yet? Can only imagine the responses you'll get over there.

You can take three rifles to Tanzania... Only problem is pushing up against the airline weight limit with appropriate numbers of rounds for the 405,375, and the 450 NE. You can get all three in a tuffpack.

Does your PH have a scoped 375 in camp? If so, bring him a box of his favorite ammo and leave your 375 at home. A 405 Win and 450 NE safari sounds like a grand idea! Shades of TR's 1909 safari for sure.

I did a whole thread here on the 405 and buffalo using TSXs and It's going for sure. One can take three rifles to Tanzania and as far as the ammo my wife goes with me and even though she does not hunt, I can use her to plus up my ammo weight limit. Hey this planning stuff is half the fun! jorge

This is easy. You book the Tanz trip with a friend. You pack your .405 and .375, your friend claims your double as his, and packs it with his 9.3 X 62. You hunt buff, zebra, etc, have a great time, and repack and fly back. Then I never speak to you again, and keep the double as my own! (Did I say that?)

Yes you did. Looking at 2012 or 13 with Pierre Van Tonder in Tanzania. Check out his Site. I know him personally and quite a few of my friends have hunted with him. Good guy!

It was all in the hold and I also applied some gold leaf to the vertical groove on the rear sight. Gives me good sight alingment. Weather was cool this morning, 49 degrees. MV right at 2100. I think I'm satisfied. The top group of four shots (two softs and solids) at 25 yards then the more open one at fifty. Success! jorge

looks like you've got her dialed in, Jorge. if it was me, I'd take the .375 and the double, although the .405 is uber-cool and retro. might require another trip.

Well that's certainly an excuse to do so, but my wife comes along so I'll make her tote that 405 smile
