Looked at a Marlin 39A Mountie made in 1957 today. Asking price was $525.00
Beautiful gun, perfect shape, shiny stock, no dings, but something bothered me about it.
The barrel band, lever, hammer, trigger, bolt, and takedown screw were all chrome-plated/shiny silver.
I've never seen that before on a Marlin 39A. Typically all I've seen are blued.
Is that normal, or did somebody pimp this thing out at some point through the years?
Good deal, or no?

LOL, small world. Yeah, that's the one.
Seriously thinking about it but the chrome really bothered me for some reason.
A Golden 39A Mountie is on my would-like-to-have list, has been for awhile.
I always felt the 24" 39A was a bit ungainly.

Check the rifle again to make sure that its chrome plating. I have seen some lever actions where those parts were all sent out for NP3/teflon coating making for a very slick action w/o need for lubrication and real easy cleaning.Barrel band may have been done just for symetry. Type of people who own mounties usually don't seem to go for simple flash. Maybe a very tricked out gun.

Minor point.....a Mountie is a 39M I believe.

I was guessing Nickel plated. It is shiny, not matte, like most Chrome or NP3 I have seen on a gun.

Yeah, it was pretty bad. I'm guessing it wasn't a factory deal. Everything I've seen indicates there was only one Chrome/Nickel plated Model 39, a limited edition.
It's a shame, wonder if that could be fixed? The rest of the gun was in great shape.

It can be fixed - About 5 yrs ago I picked up a rough 1954 Mountie "L" with a custom nickel plated lever. Dick Williams Gun Shop in Saginaw Mi. stripped the lever and reblued the whole gun for a reasonable fee. It may not original but it is a nice shooter.

some were 39A some were 39 M depends on year.
mine is 1955 39A no mountie designation but straight grip and 20 inch barrel

The first 39A- Mounties were made in 1954 and were stamped just 39A. Later in the fifties and early sixties a series of limited edition chrome plated As and Mounties WERE made. Don't know if this is what you saw or not. Did it have a carved stock?
Later in the early sixties is when the 39M designation for the Mountie came along. About then I got interested in girls and lost track of what Marlin was doing.

I haven't been back yet to see if it's still there. Afraid I might buy it, although the price does seem high, esp. if it would require a strip and reblue to fix the messed-up bling bits.

The price seems too high for the condition IMO. Wait for an unmolested one. Someday, one will appear.
