Hi all:

Thought I'd post here since fellow Savage/Stevens nuts could likely offer me some advice. Not sure of the model, but I have a very old Stevens 410 side by side. It has checkered wood, double white bead sights, and the receiver is case harden colored. The left side of the receiver has "Springfield" stamped above the words "J. Stevens." The right side has the #"5000" stamped in it. Not sure if this is a serial # (doubtful) or a model #. Anyways, long story short is that due to the fact that some #%&*^@$ing Moron cut the stock and added a pad to it, I keep it handy this time of year to keep chipmunks and red squirrels outta my bird feeders. Winchester #9 does the trick. The other day I blasted a would be seed thief, then after I broke open the action and removed one spent and one fired shell, I could not close the barrels back up. The only way I can now get the gun to close back up is to remove the forend, separate the barrels from the rest of the gun, then reassemble the three pieces, then the gun will close up. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks, Rich.

Was it the "#%&*^@$ing" part that you had trouble spelling?

Rich, when you take the barrels off can you move the extractor freely? is there a rod that goes through the barrel lug? is that binding?

There is a small block that looks as if it should be pushed downward by the piece between the 2 barrels as you try and close the gun up. this little "block" appears to be binding and will not slide down into the action. Not sure what disassembling the gun does to fix this, but it does.

I dont have the parts list to go with the picture but if the model 5000 is like the 5100. are you talking about part 39?

Yep, that's the one. The lug that sits just ahead of part #9 in the above pic will not push part #39 down.

so with the barrel and forarm off can you move all of the sliding parts freely( number 9 the extractor and 39?

If neither the extractor or the lug binds when you move them off the gun, then I would take them both off and look for wear or dirt or burs that could be binding things up.

Where does you top lever sit when the gun is closed? Centered, left or right of center?

The top lever sits swung way over to the right as you are holding the gun looking down on it. I also noticed I am having trouble with the left barrel (rear trigger). Often it will not fire a live round. Not even a "click" when I pull the trigger.

Because the opening and closing of the barrels (one of those directions) cocks the gun, the issues COULD be related.

you need to find a competent double gun smith... there are not a lot of these out there...

I'm hoping a dis-assembly and thorough cleaning will help. It has been sitting with very little use for a long while until recently.
