Talking hunting with geedubya the other night and discussing the virtues of different states and what they have to offer in regards to hunting. G from Texas and me from Montana, we had a good dialogue, although he wouldn't agree with me that Montana was better.
We talked about grand slams of turkeys and sheep. Although I will never accomplish either, I told him I had gotten the big 10 of Montana and he said I should publish it here on the campfire. I haven't ever been big on chasing trophies as much as what guns I could use in the attempt to get big game animals. I will admit when It came to drawings, I was looking for trophy animals.
I have been fortunate enough to have gotten all 10:
Elk
Moose
Bighorn Sheep
Goat
Cougar
Antelope
Mule deer
Whitetail deer
Black bear
Grizzly bear

That's a lifetime of accomplishment, well done. You might consider trying your hand at blacktails.
Great accomplishment.
Cool set of headgear on the goat (antelope).
Very cool, shrapnel. Thanks for sharing.
Which was the best eating?
Space didn't allow for all the pictures. Here is the hide and head of the Grizzly...

Which was the best eating?
Best eating is always subjective. Probably the moose or sheep. I can tell you with all certainty though, the grizzly and the goat aren't worth the trouble. You couldn't even stir the soup made from either one...
Nice job. Probably not many can make that claim.
I am at 4 and have many times passed on the opportunity to take a black bear to get my number to 5.
Hoping to add at least a sheep to the mix. The other species I have never had a great aspiration to go after. Moose is starting to be a little more intriguing these days. But with what it takes to draw, probably won't happen.
That's very cool. Quite an accomplishment.
Buzzy oughta be by soon with his pics of 87 elk to one up you.

Buzz will alwys try to land on top, but he doesn't realize you don't land there, you have to climb there...

Stirring must have let the stink out. š¤„
Never hit the powerball though, about the same odds as some of those tags.
Very cool. Congratulations
No bison on the list?

Not considered big game the same as the 10 listed. The grizzly is no longer available eaither, I got it a long time ago...

Ahah: Noticed you were a much younger man in some of the photos! As some one else posted u perhaps should be playing the power ball with your luck, odds to draw on some those tags are slim. Grats again and keep at it!

Drawing odds are something I was lucky with. I got my sheep in 1990 with less than 3 years applying. The Goat was in 1992 or 1993 with less than 3 years applying. My first moose, however, was 25 years, my second was 13 years the second time.
Pictures do show the time differetial in getting those animals...
Heck of an accomplishment, well done.
Good for you, great state to live and be able to hunt all these critters.
I met a tile setter in Alaska that said he moved there temporarily to hunt, in ten years he shot everything available including Musk ox and bison.
Congrats btw.
Two moose tags, wow! The moose pictured looks like a darn good bull, got to be 50ā plus. I got lucky here in wy. Too and drew moose, goat , and sheep. Fun playing that lotto game isn āt it. Howās big Mike B doing?
Cool Feat shrapnel, Congratulations!
Nice Bison and Good size Grizz. Was that shot on the Grizz the first and final round or a finishing-off shot?

That's a heck of a pile of big stuff. I'd be willing to bet that the total weight of all the p-dogs and gophers Shrapnels shot would out weigh them. 4 or 5 thousand of those little buggers a year add up.

Fortunate soul for sure, congratulations on a lifetime of trophies.I lived in Texas my whole life.Everytime I've left, its hunting season that brings me back and keeps me here. But it's no match for what Montana can offer if your backyard sits in the right places.Happy hunting to u both!Looks like it's your passion too. Thanks for sharing, hell of an accomplishment.
Well done. I suck. 4/10 is all I can claim. Cool that you shot the buff with a Sharps. If I can ever draw, I plan on taking my 1886 45-90 for the hunt.
You can hunt Moose in Canada every year. If you want to shoot one this is doable for most anyone.
That's very cool. Quite an accomplishment.
Buzzy oughta be by soon with his pics of 87 elk to one up you.
Killed 9 of the 10 in Montana about a month before I turned 30. Shoulda coulda woulda on grizzlies. Applied for the spring tags the last couple years they had a season in the early 90's. Should have hunted them with the OTC fall tags in the 80's. Big mistake on my part.
Cool Shrap.
Montana is on a short list of places I'd rather live.
Like most of the list, "If I didn't need to earn a living".
Those animals all look like trophies to me.
Iām from Texas and Montana wins hands down.

Maybe you should add some pictures of the moose with the lever gun you didn't kill it with but did change your clothes/hat after the shot.
That's always fun and we all love a faked picture now and again.

Congrats Shrap, like a previous Govenor of Wyoming once said "You done good!"
I've also got the 10 animals that you listed, but I had to get my Mountian lion in Colorado, and my Grizzly bear in Alaska.
For many years I had an OTC Grizzly tag in my pocket just hoping to see one on my elk gut pile, and I applied for that one spring season that they had up near Choteau, but didn't draw. Like many tag opportunities that we had here 45+ years ago, we didn't take them seriously enough, thinking if we didn't fill them that year, we could the next year. Now those tags are either gone or we have a 0.nothing chance of drawing them.
I also bought a Mountain lion tag for many years again mainly hoping to see one while hunting deer or elk, but never did, although I have seen them from my house, but not while the season was open.
I'm also proud to have gotten the other 8 animals on your list here in Montana and all on DIY solo hunts...
No bison on the list?
Or a wolverine?
I've also applied for a State Buffalo tag every year that they've offered them but again, never drawn. So I had to get my Buffalo on the D, but I did use my .54 Hawken to shoot him.
And while sheep hunting in one of Montana's Unlimited Tag units one year I did see a Wolverine, but I didn't have a Trapper's license and the season wasn't open, so I had to get my Wolverine while Dall sheep hunting in Canada's NWT...
buffybr, I remember seeing those pics over the years. I thought you were from Montana but wasn't sure.
I am envious of you and Shrapnel, and wish I would have had the time and $$$ to do what you two have done.
I remember putting in for a moose tag for years and not getting one. I do have an unlimited sheep hunt close by, but again I just couldn't swing it or was gone working over seas. ( 33 months in Viet Nam).
But, I am probably too old to take part in the sheep season, and Elk and deer I can get within 5 miles from town.
We have plenty of bears locally and Mt Lions also. Maybe I will see if I can get one before it's too late.
Thanks for the pics,

Hell of an array you got there.
I am at 7 of the Montana 10. I just canāt pull a Rocky Mountain sheep, goat or bison tag in Montana, or any other state for that matter but plan to get a goat in AK this year.
I do have a few grizz from outside Montana, so thatās a plus and puts me at 8, I guessā¦could my Montana wolf count instead?
Iāve trapped 10-12 Wolverine but never have killed one outright. That is something to seriously be proud of.

So anyone but you who posts in this thread is polluting? Maybe you should include posting rules in your OP so you can enjoy a more pure posting experience here on the 24hr Campfire. We love to cater to the whim of the special snowflakes and their safe spaces.
Also please explain to the class how Wyoming and Idaho don't provide the same hunting.
Thanks in advance and again, we are all here wanting to give you safe space to post.

I'm a little jealous of the opportunities in your area.
I've been limited to elk, mulies, and antelope - for the most part.
Did get to hunt Barbary sheep, once, but had no opportunities (read luck) .

Good job killing various animals on all that time off work.

But, that being said, nice pictures! Maybe in my next lifetime!!
The funniest part is that Burns and Buzzie have all these pictures loaded all the time incase they feel threatened and need a little validation.
I bet Burnsie has a picture of the condom wrapper Buzzie used on him the time they went to the Sadie Hawkins Dance.
Well take a moment and load your pictures, LiL Jimmy.

Great post and photos Kirk.
Just saw this, as I was at my lease in the Texas hill country chillin' and killin' stuff most all last week and overdid it on the heat. Think it had something to do with working on a certain critter for six hours in the direct sun.
Final total, 6 hoglets, 2 coons, some brewskis and a Zebu bull.
Yes, I always enjoy our conversations. You may even count me as a fanboi'. Not many folks about which I will say.
One thing we do have in common is : "I haven't ever been big on chasing trophies as much as what guns I could use in the attempt to get big game animals."
I'm with you on that, 100%. I personally have never "scored" an animal. Weighed, yes, scored, no.
But I must need make a minor point......
I've been to Montana twice, once on a combo Elk/Mule Deer hunt, and the second on a motorcycle tour with two dozen other guys.
When I think of Montana, the John Steinbeck quoute comes to mind...... āMontana seems to me to be what a small boy would think Texas is like from hearing Texansā
If I'd have been born there I'd probably have never left. But alas that was not the case.
I am also a fan of Teddy Roosevelt (one of the reasons I used the 405 Double, as WWTD) on the African Zebu, a quote of which his authorship is dubious, but fits....
"Do what you can with what you've got where you are."
I think my bones could rest easy in Montana, but since I am in Texas, I'm content to make do!
ya!

I'm back after serving over a year's long sentence in posting prison. Can only be on my best behavior - probation officer will not be lenient. Love to see all the MT slams.
I'll never get all the original 10- Grizzly is out of the possibility for me in MT I believe. Bison for me, is unlikely and I apply in other states also. I was sitting next to my father-in-law when he took an excellent Bison near Gardiner in 2005, making all-time B&C.
I've had luck in the MT system, taking Moose, Sheep and Goat, as well as wolf, few lions bears, and all the other vanilla stuff. I have also take all of the MT animals of those I've taken on public land, none guided.
Here's an assortment of my MT slam - including the FIL's bison.
MT Bighorn - Spanish Peaks Wilderness 2021
MT Black Bear, one of around 25 from MT, Lewis and Clark National Forest May 2014
MT Whitetail deer, Muddy Creek near Homestead, MT, 1983, my 1st buck
MT Cougar, Gallatin Range 2005
One of more than 2 dozen 6X6 of better MT bull elk, 2010, Spanish Peaks Wilderness
Shiras Moose, Blacktail WMA, 2007
Wolf - Spanish Peaks, 2015
Mule Deer, one of around 20 MT 4X4 or better bucks, Rocky Mtn Front, 2004
Pronghorn, one of maybe 30 MT bucks, Little Porcupine Creek, 2002
Mt goat, Spanish Peaks, 2012
Bison, Gardiner, taken by my FIL at the time in 2006
Mighty fine.
Green with envy here!
Best,
GWB
Shrapnel, thanks for starting an amazing picture show with your Big Ten.
It brought out some of the best Montana hunting pics I have seen. Makes me wish my Dad and Grandfather would have brought a long a camera when I started hunting in the 50's . We took some nice trophies over the years and saved the horns, but never had any mounted. But we had a pile of horns until my son's started taking theirs home and I sold the rest.
All of you contributors have brought back memories--good ones!
Ken

Why I would ever respond to a pig like you, claiming a rifle business that sells 50/year, but here goes.
I shot that grizzly while you were in diapers the first time. I don't mean the big ones you wear now, but the smaller ones you wore through 4th grade. I didn't have a camera then and I have shot a car load of animals that aren't pictured for the same reason. As I recall another upstanding member here paid a visit around the same time you were AWOL š¤·āāļø
Itās not very big , but a nice one for the area it was taken. It was 9.5 years old and scored 168. It was a long and trying hunt and I ended getting with a rifle during the rut, just a mile or so above the river. Pretty much everything that could go wrong on a hunt went wrong on my sheep hunt. But it did get to milk having an unfilled sheep permit in my pocket for almost half a year.

Thanks, I was thinking bigger, but a beautiful ram. Congrats.
Having a sheep tag for 6 months would be a great problem to have.
All of this has been interesting, but will comment that Shrapnel was a year behind me at Bozeman Senior High School, way back in ancient times. His grizzly kill was well-known among us, and occurred partly because that was during the era when grizzlies were dispersing outside Yellowstone because of the "dump grounds" being shut down.
The park used to dump garbage in specific areas, which naturally attracted bears--and in fact the Park authorities eventually built mini-bleachers next to the dumps so tourists could see a "real" grizzly bear. Eventually the famous (at least back then)research by the Craighead brothers resulted in the dumps being shut down, and many bears wandered farther to find food, often well outside the park. Which is why Shrapnel encountered his big bear near Bozeman. (Back then the season for both black and grizzly bears was open year-round--and you could take a grizzly if you had a valid Montana hunting license, though you then had to pay $25 "trophy fee".)
I have only taken 7 of the Montana 10, mostly because my luck at drawing tags is lousy. My wife Eileen's is much better. In fact she drew a Montana bull moose tag the first time she applied in 1989. (I'd been applying for decades.) It was in an area south of Bozeman where I'd hunted since I was 12, so knew where moose hung out. She got exactly the bull she wanted early on opening morning.)
Have also been putting in for other special tags for decades, and the only reason I have a bighorn is drawing a ewe tag, back when you could apply for them separately from the ram draw.
In fact Eileen has taken 7 of the 10, despite not starting hunting until her mid-30s, a year or so after we were married...

Iāve been fortunate to harvest 7 of the 9 available in my lifetime. Definitely good times to be a hunter no matter your state of residence.
Awesome stuff - is that a Bridgers goat?
Thanks for posting.
Looks like a couple with a Winchester 71 lever gun. Getting it done with iron sights is kewl. No need to fake a picture as some here have done.
Someday.
What does that ram score if you donāt mind? Anymore pics?
I did a thread about it here, tons of photos of the ram I was hunting and the other hunter who ended up killing him - an 82 year old man. Pics of my ram and the taxidermy including my den with a good portion of the MT slam on one wall.. long read but when it comes to hunts, probably most challenging experience Iāve had on a permit. I killed the ram on the 88th day looking.

I don't suffer fools well. A few get their feeling hurt.
Many others get a smile.
Lots of smiles in this thread.
Everyone who posted on here, thanks for the pics.
Great animals.
Burns, you have shot some nice trophies in your day.
Too bad you always have to be a pompous azzhole.

If this place didn't have any azzholes or fools, Bin would go broke.

Rick's Internet Island for Misfit Toys ain't for everyone.
Neither is a Campfire at hunting camp.
Special Snowflakes melt pretty fast when they meet the Campfire.
Guess I'll post a few more of the big ten or whatever its being called in Montana that I've been involved with.
My Dad has shot 3 shiras moose, 2 cows (MT) and 1 bull(WY).
Also shot a B&C bighorn, 183 and change:
And an ewe bighorn:
Couple decent bulls:
Some mule deer:
Pronghorn:
Just last fall, his best Whitetail buck, Greenhorn was hunting the same area, in fact Greenhorn took the photo:
My younger brother has done pretty well too.
Whitetail:
Mule Deer:
pronghorn:
elk:
Bull moose:
Mountain goat, have some better photos somewhere I should scan. One 20 hour day to get a billy killed in the Bitterroots:
A few more.
One of my best friends with a B&C sheep near Missoula:
Same ram, different angle:
Cow moose with a family friend:
Ram from last fall that my Brother and I found and helped a CA hunter kill and pack while we were elk hunting the breaks last fall:
Pictures of the rams the evening before he killed it (his ram is the lowest one):
Giving Losttrail60 a little break?
It must sting knowing that you've never killed any of those animals and are jealous of Shrap.
Ouch.
Pretty sad he and the other wannabes get so jealous and [bleep] on a manās threadš¤”
No wonder some donāt post much on here.
I do envy the hunters, pompous or not, who have had the good fortune to have hunted such great game animals successfully. However, I like to think I am above pissing on their successes.
Thatās a dandy buck ur dad killed Lloyd š
Pretty sure ol Gruff will post his pictures soon.
Cause he does all that hunting.
He sure does a lot of posting about others hunting.
Post a pic of your kidās first buck and I might repost mine.
Chug a lug. That NyQuil aināt gonna drink itself
Quit hiding behind your kids, it's pathetic.
Post your pictures, kiddo. Like everyone else in this thread.
He's not hiding, just hilariously pointing out how pathetic you are....
John"gotnofamily"burns. Come think of it, it's a common trait with the resident egomaniacs.....weird.
Good stuff Greenhorn. Always enjoyed seeing your pics.
Good trade for Tactical Travis.
Upgrading the Campfire is sort of my jam. You may thank me later.
This is a chicken bone In Burnās throat. Choking on the truth and still afraid to admit it. You will always dodge the truth to try and make yourself look better. It doesnāt fool anyone but yourselfā¦
Youāll do any corner crossings ?
