Anyone else notice how drastically the officiating changes from the regular season to the tournament and then continues to change the farther into the tournament we get? By the time the final four rolls around, knives and brass knuckles are allowed whenever play gets under the rim. The teams that regularly appear in the later rounds are the ones that understand this and take advantage of it.
Pains me to pull for Wofford, but looks like I'll have to do it. Have to pull for the SoCon.
I liked the no call at the end of the Dayton/OSU game. Could have gone either way, but in the tournament, you can't have the stripes decide a final possession.

At 10 minutes into the first half, I bet that moving double-team D would have been called!
Yeah, I'm not sure what exactly what constitutes a foul anymore. The season started with declarations from the NCAA that they were going to call all fouls that impeded an offensive player.
Looks like that all went out the window. I think a lot of it is because it's mainly veteran officials in the tourney, and they aren't going to be told how to call a ball game. And the vets err on the side of no blood no foul.
Some of these games today have had non calls that were really bad. And then the next trip they call a touch foul.
Coack K at Duke ran his mouth earlier saying how great his conference was and now he gets bounced by a #13 seed. Kind of a hit to his credibility. I love it.
I'm expecting Mich. St. to manhandle Harvard, but you never know. They are great at playing down to their competition in non-rival games..........
Yeah, they do sometimes, but they didn't on Tuesday......maybe they've finally got a chip on their shoulder; they absolutely DESTROYED WI & U-M in the Big 10 tourney.
Virginia will be a really tough challenge, but I think MSU has turned the corner...........maybe not a NC team but pretty well rounded right now & fairly deep by the necessity of playing so many people during all the injuries.
I think Michigan's coach Beilein may be the most under-rated coach out there. Dude is impressive.
He takes them to finals last year, loses Tre Burke (the best player in the country), then loses his 1st team All-America center to injury this year, changes the whole team's gameplan/philosophy, and still wins the Big 10 by 2 games, beating Michigan St. twice......
Florida relies too much one one player. Take him out, they aren't all that. All it takes is somebody good enough to defend him, and they can be beat, IMO.
Not sure if you know or not, but they just won 3 FCS football championships in a row......
Oh yeah, for sure. Sister was born in the Dakota's. I was young but I remember enough to follow the geo. It was our landing spot with my Dad's return from Italy and as he called it the Service.
Bison produced a great ESPN Gameday experience this past season as well. Memory lane even though I was very young.
I was working in the yard and didn't see all of the MI-TX game but the highlights I just saw showed a very good MI team. You guys should turn one of those 3 point shooters into a QB.
Hey I just remembered Tommy Amaker coaches Harvard. I did carpentry work in his office when he first arrived at Michigan. MOF, I actually talked to Bo Shembechler in the parking lot then. Then he got into a Lincoln Navigator and drove off......
Harvard ain't bad for sure............Harris is a 19 year old true soph, was Indiana Mr. B-ball 2 years ago, but he's just to young to go to the NBA, IMO.
Nice! "Two in the Pink one in the stink" Not sure if that is what he was talking about.
Cleanthony Early of Wichita played HS ball in my town, Pine Bush NY (a small farming community in the foothills of the Catskills). He's played well so far. Nice dunk toward the end of the 1/2.
Once they got on the floor, it was an eye opener. KY was bigger, faster and more athletic. They're still kids though. The run is almost over. A more experienced team will spank them and exploit their weaknesses....as bad as I hate to say it.
I took some early beatings, though. I need Mich and Iowa St to get to the Final 4 to even remotely have a chance at winning our local gig for 1500 bucks.
Rather proud of what Bennett is doing at Virginia. He was an amazing player here in Green Bay and while he didn't light up the NBA - at least he made it there from a small town school in a small city.
I remember that when he was picked in the draft, there were stories that the Bulls had worked him out prior. 1992 - the Bulls won their third in a row, were NBA kings and they were interested in a sub 6 foot guard from UW-Green Bay.
I don't know why all of the MSU teams are often referred to as "Sparty"...recent development. Don't know who started it.
My point exactly. Calling the team "Sparty" is just as stupid as calling the Colorado team "Ralphie", the Texas team "Bevo", Kansas State "Willie", and on down the line.

Always been a fan of the Bennetts
Yup! Bennett is bringing in developmental players and getting around this one and gone crap. He will be a force to be reckoned with. Especially, next season.
va went thru to many bad years but they are knockin them off this year.i used to play ball back in the late 70's early 80's. i thought ralph sampson would take them farther than he did. we played pickup games with sampson almost every week when he was in high school in harrisonburg va. the whole team can shoot this year. if those top seeds keep droppin out va has a shot at it.
Most entertaining game of the evening,..Kentucky/Louisville.
I'm gonna go nuts if Calipari continues to run the offense through his perimeter players tonight. That's pretty much all he's done all year except for occasional spin moves and "drive lefts" from Randall.
He's got 2 legitimate 7 footers on the team, and he's running his offense through his perimeter players.
They know 2 things.
Chunk up a rock from 3 point range,... and miss it,...or drive the basket and throw up a rock,..then miss it and fall down.
,..then miss their free throws.
He plays the team this way because in the NBA,..everybody shoots or drives,..even the 7 footers,...and he wants to keep the impression alive that he's preparing players for the NBA,..so he can recruit.
Fug that, I say.
He's got a classic back to the basket, 7' post man in Dakari Johnson.
He needs to put him in the post,..have the perimeter players feed him the ball,..and let old big boy go one on one with whoever feels like taking him on.
Johnson is a freshman and is still a bit green, but he has the potential to be a killer old school center,...and he's got a big heart.
If Joe B. Hall was still the coach, he'd be working that 7' big body center to death.
2 Michigan teams and 3 Big 10 teams in Elite 8 would be awesome....
I wouldn't be too quick to write off Virginia. Bennett has built something really special there and his players are believers. There's quite the buzz on campus and alum that I've not seen since I took some classes there. Might not happen this year but watch out if it does tonight.
That's the piece that's lacking from Bennett's program right now. You'll see that next year from this same exact team. So yeah, hoping they ate their spinach for lunch!
Kimber7man hooked me up with tickets tonight in Indy! The game was awesome. My son (6 years old) was so nervous the last two minutes I thought he was going to puke! He shook non-stop until the buzzer!
He alters a lot of shots inside. His absence was noticed last night too. UL got a few easy layups that would have been contested. He provides some offensive spark at times that will be missed as well.
It can't be good for any team to lose an athletic 7-footer..

Yeah,..Willie will be missed,..but on a positive note, 7 foot freshman Dakari Johnson scored 15 points and grabbed 6 rebounds last night.
I definitely want the white guys to win. I am not a racist. I am very proud of my color and I'd love to see a bunch of white kids win it all in a game for the most part dominated by Blacks..
Just don't trust Bo. Guy can coach and he does well - RIGHT up until Wisconsin's either looking to go to a final 4 (never been under Bo) or if they're ranked in the top 7 or so. Then they'll lose 4 in a row to schools whose primary degree path involves "computers" or "video game design".
I knew he was - it was a good call. I am tired of the accepted practice being that any time the offense wants to drive to the basket as time runs out, the defense must just stand aside and let them go.

There are waaaaaaaaaaaaay too many blocking calls being called when the correct call is charging..........the benefit of the doubt is ALWAYS being given to the offensive player & that is just plain wrong in half the cases.
There were a lot of curious calls in the Badger/Arizona game.
Would love to see a couple teams from MI join the Badgers in TX!
Wisconsin seemed to get screwed out of a couple good defensive plays, I thought. That charge at the end was less of a charge than a couple of the other non-calls, I thought.
2 Michigan teams in the F4 would be WAY cool.......
There are two things I can say with complete faith that every college basketball fan will agree with:
1. This has been a fantastic tournament. I think it's because the seeding was horrible, but whatever the reason it's been a very exciting tournament to watch.
2. The officiating has been atrocious. What's a foul one place isn't another, they call the game differently depending on he game situation, etc. it's always been this way, but it has seemed really bad this year. Post players can use knives on each other with no call, but if you touch a wing player or guard it's a foul. Just call the game as the rules are written and stop trying to change the number of points scored with officiating.
I'll say up front, I had very little expectations for Kentucky in the tournament this year. I doubted that they would get past the second round, and a first round exit was a distinct possibility.
They've had games all season where they just flat fell on their faces.
But they've built a trainload of momentum and confidence with their wins over Wichita State and Louisville,..and I've given up making any predictions about where they'll end up.
They're playing to win it all now.
That doesn't mean that they will. From here on out it's going to be very tough.
But I don't expect to see them lay down.
They're going to play a 40 minute game.
It should be fun to watch.
Regardless of what happens, I can't continue to mean mouth Calipari.
I expect to see Cal lean heavy on my man, Dakari (Big) Johnson, from here on out.
Willie's out,..and the twins and Young have shown limited production from the perimeter all year long,...and this last game had post man Johnson scoring 15 points and grabbing 6 rebounds.
Those aren't killer numbers,...but Big Johnson has a big heart and he wants to contribute.
He's due to have a breakout game soon.
I'd like to see it happen today.
Cal's going to have to let some offense flow through the post for it to happen, however.
Appling sucks. Fouls him from beyond the arc with 30 seconds left and down 3 points. Good way to end his college career, with his head STILL up his as$.
No, they ain't Kentucky, talent wise. I don't wanna take away from their win today, but MSU beat themselves today, IMO. They were uninspired and lifeless.....
Mich St. Is a strange team, famous for such let downs. Talent-wise, only Kentucky can match them right now, IMO.
Problem is, they don't seem to ever have a game plan/style of their own, like some teams do. They kinda play street ball, and seem to change things up with each opponent.
Syracuse has looked like Syracuse for 30 years. Same team, different names. Michigan plays a consistent type of ball every game. So does Louisville.
MSU seems to just do "whatever" and get by with talent alone, most days.
Anyhooo---enough about State. I'm ready to watch Meeeeechigan and hope they can shoot the lights out.
Good thing about this is, I have been a Kentucky fan since I was a kid. Have friends/family there. And I like Wisconsin also. Spent lots of time in both states. So at least somebody that I like will be in final no matter what.
Oh yes, almost forgot. If Michigan can pull it off, I can make fun of State fans for another year. Given Michigan will have gotten further in tournament yet again.
A little Jim Beam Black coming up. Or should I say, going down.....
Wisconsin looks like Michigan looked before they lost their center and had to change things up. Good inside and out. They are tough and well coached.
Really, Michigan just being here is an overachievement, to most. They lost best player in country to draft, plus Tim Hardaway Jr., then lose their all America center to injury. Beilein has done a better than good coaching job....
I considered everything above the 2nd round a bonus for Wisconsin. Glad to see them in the 4.
Bo actually has 3 DIII National Championships and worked his arse off to get to D-I school. Happy for the guy. Last guy that got WI to a round of 4 IIRC was Dick Bennett - another small school guy who got his chance in DI at Wisconsin.
They ain't gonna have anybody flying through the air and stuffing put-backs on the offensive end, like Kentucky has already done 4-5 times now, is what I'm sayin'.....
It seems driving the lane is the thing to do this year. They almost NEVER call a charge, in any of the games. Except that big charge call last night.....
Unlike some, Kentucky, being an 8 seed, has had one he11 of a schedule, and just beat 3 quality teams in a row. That has to carry some weight, IMO......
Well I'm rooting for Wisconsin big time. I'm a Big 10 whore.
Minny won the NIT last night...the best of the worst.
While in school, my dad used that analogy around me being an average C student. As he said, -- it's okay if your goal is to be the best of the worst and the worst of the best. I bumped to a 4.0 the very next year.
If WI can find the shooting game they've shown lately they have a great shot at winning. Betting KY gets into foul trouble early.
Maybe not,...but if you like basketball, that Kentucky/Wisconsin game was one of the best college games to come along in a long while.
Wisconsin played crazy good ball and was ahead most of the game.
Kentucky finally put a run on them about midway through the second half,...got up by 8,...but Wisconsin immediately came back and it ended up coming down to the wire, with Kentucky winning by one point with a 22' 3 point shot with 6 seconds left in the game.
Pseudo-Chickens? I agree that the issue of "they aren't going to call charges, so we'll just drive and drive and make them call fouls" needs to be addressed.
It's only an offensive foul if the defender has established his position and holds it before contact is made.
A defender has to be very quick to be able to do that.
Most of the time, a blocking foul is called when the defender is moving along with with the shooter and tries to alter his drive by slowing down or stopping in an attempt to move him off of his path.
It's a tough call to make sometimes, but a defender can't be running along beside the shooter then just stop in his path.
He's got to establish his position before the man driving the ball gets to it.
They have tightened up the charge call to where it is almost impossible to achieve. In addition to being afraid that a defender might transfer a bit of sweat to the offensive player, in order to be granted the boon of a charge, the defender must now have established his position more or less before the offensive player has entered the game.
Kyabrams66: My "Cinderella team" was Gonzaga - they didn't go to far in the tournament though. I was rooting for them but when they got bumped in the second round I also started rooting for another "under-dog", Kentucky! One of my out of state Varmint Hunting friends played for Kentucky years ago before he became a DEA agent. He is retired now and travels to Montana a couple times a year to Hunt and fish. Great guy so I am rooting for his old alma mater to win. So many of the games in this years tournament have been great contests to watch. I hope Mondays game is another good one. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy
UConn is the more dangerous team but KY takes it unless they get into trouble early. --------------------------------------------------------- ARLINGTON, Texas -- Kentucky center Willie Cauley-Stein will miss Monday night's national title game against Connecticut because of a lingering ankle injury, while forward Alex Poythress plans to play after tweaking his knee during the Wildcats' semifinal celebration.
Cauley-Stein called it "heartbreaking" that he would have to watch the championship game from the bench. He hurt his right ankle in his NCAA tournament opener against Kansas State, played with pain in a victory over Wichita State and then aggravated the injury against Louisville.
I sit third row center court at UCONN games. What is frustrating as hell is they don't play like they do in the tourney at home. This year I gave my buddy my tickets to the final four. I know he and his wife will have a blast either way. Hell he has called me already like ten times. I am not answering his calls tonight. Hopefully UCONN will repeat 2004 with the men and woman bringing home the titles!
I hate Calapari but I like UK so good luck to all you UK fans tonight.
I'll say it once again. Never ever count out a basketball program like UConn or KY. In this case, I would say UC is the more dangerous of the 2.
Go SEC Wildcats!
It's amusing to me that you can get no SEC homer to acknowledge the fact that 3 of the starting 5 for UK are from Texas.
What does that have to do with anything? UT has a solid program just come up short all the time. Remember in college basketball it is not who the best team is, it is the team that played the best in the tourney against their match ups. With one exception woman's basketball. But even then sometimes it still sneaks in there.
We continually hear the chants of SEC, SEC, SEC......all the while the majority of UK's players are from nowhere near Kentucky. I think that's rather comical, that's all.

Let me ask you Calipari azzkissers something: 1. What D1 schools has he coached at? 2. How many of those schools has wound up with troubles from the NCAA?

He went back to Texas to coach and they run him off too.
Didn't stop UK from getting those Texas high school players though did it? How is that working out for you?
Very well, thank you.
Kentucky has the biggest fan base, the best support, great facilities, the best coach, and the players are treated like rock stars here.
We'll continue to get the best talent in the country for the foreseeable future.
You're probably right about recruiting. Playing at JerryWorld will probably land UK some more top TX boys for sure. Let me ask you something. Do Kentucky basketball fans beat their chest and chant SEC, SEC, SEC when a SEC team wins the national title in football?
UConn's two guards are pretty salty and could cause problems for UK like they did for Florida. I do think though that UK has too much size and too much depth. Who knows though? Should be a great game to watch.

Best team bought and purchased in the country, Calipari still might [bleep] it up....Cool thing is those kids will make their money, and hopefully they'll keep most of it....Calipari will
