The great outdoors.
Post a pic from the start of Fall!
Sammo!
Nice pic! Your pictures always pop and seem so vivid and full of life. Ya got an eye for it.
Thanks MM, all that fresh air!
Fueling up..
Now we're talkin', thanks MJ and RL!
Thanks for this post Sam. We need to get back to some good thoughts for a while.
Good idea for a thread, Sam. I expect there'll be some good pics with such a colorful subject.
I already shared this one on the Deer Hunting page, but since I don't have much for fall pics, AND I'm just a bit proud, I'll share it here, too.
And-
Not very scenic, but certainly fall related-
Saw this guy a couple weeks ago. Can't believe he let me drive the truck right up next to him. Must have been some tasty vittles down in that swamp to keep him frozen in place while I snapped this pic-
Here are a few from last weekend, in northern MN.
A beautiful road down to the boat landing to Crooked Lake. It doesn't get much more beautiful that this IMO.

I enjoy these threads more than any other. (Even when kamo gari posts pictures of his odd "cuisine"). Not sure why they don't get more attention.

September Rocks in the Rockies
Great pics everyone, thanks for posting!
Speaking of Fall, it sure didn't feel like it today. Damn near hit 100F!
Yeah it was hot as hell here yesterday and was supposed to be today but at least we had some wind today to make it feel cooler. A cold front is moving in supposed to be about 15-20 degrees cooler tomorrow with rain through the weekend. So much for picture taking. Might go out anyway. Don't know if the cold front will make it over the hills to you but hopefully you'll get some 'fall' weather soon. I'm sick of summer...
Here's a fall pic...just classy, Ingwe style..
MJ, that is downright classy indeed, nice one!
We have one more day of heat then the cool down and rain shows up this weekend. Scrambling to get the last of the hay baled up but we should luck out and be done before the weather switches.
Ingwe... That brookie pic is awesome!
One from this morning. Black bear in a trap.
Great pics everyone, thanks for posting!
Speaking of Fall, it sure didn't feel like it today. Damn near hit 100F!
We had 78 here Sammo. 80's into the weekend. Time for a cool down!
Middle Piney Creek in Sept.
How old is that burn, Wyo?
MJ, that is downright classy indeed, nice one!

92 on the bank thermometer here in Mohall NoDak today.
Ben, that is a frikken sweet pic and not something I expected!
Details? How is the corn lookin'? Still green?
TZ, dude, I am ready to cool down as well!
Pheasant season opens up sometime soon but it's been way too warm lately. I know the archery hunters aren't liking it either.
Speaking of pheasants, this morning my dad's dog was riding with me in the swather. He loves it cause he can see everything out the full length windows. More than once he sees a bird or critter before I do.
Anyway this morning he and I both were watching a 3/4 grown chick run and 'short fly/hop' in front of the header. Thin field so it was easy to see her.
Finally I lost sight so I stopped and got out to chase her out of the way. Took a second but I found her, she thought she was hidden and I just grabbed her up. Weird bird, maybe it was sick.
That's my big story for the day....grin
We have a bunch of corn planted up on the side of a mountain. The bears were raising hell in our top strip, plus getting into our wrapped hay. We called the game commission, and they brought out a trap. Its a big Calvert pipe with a trap door. Checked the trap this morning and he was inside. Snapped a cellphone pic. The officer said he weighed around 300 and hauled him off.
We started chopping corn today. Little on the wet side but its bagging nicely. Think it'll ton out nicely.
Oh chit, I bet a bear could really make a mess of a corn field!
think 300 pound coon.....
They basically just sit on their ass, and pull all of the stocks down around them. There were 3-4 spots about 15' in diameter. I've seen fields with 50-60' of damage. So we're hoping we nipped the problem in the bud.
I snapped this pic on the way to work this morning.
Fall sunrise-
Weather has even good here. 1 week of temps pushing 100 this summer, but overall pretty mild. 50s for lows and. 70s for highs now.
Last Friday my buddies lab with my first ever teal.
I was out at first light, camera in hand.
Fog pretty much looks like fog everywhere, and we had cumulus right down on the deck 'til well into morning (0700).
Maybe Maana.
GTC
Sam - what kind of baler were you using in the OP?
Mog - I remember my sister-in-law running a swather with child asleep on the floor - seems the sound & vibration put them out quickly!
think 300 pound coon.....
Yep!
Lots of cool picts here gents!
I figured it would be about that bad.....grin
Luckily we only have a few stray coons but damn are they messy.
GTC, fog is a good sign though?
We always thought so, mark fog days down on the calendar and 90-100 days later it's gonna rain!
Sticking with the water theme. Week ago today(not Fall quite yet, via mobile device aka war pony).
Last 2 trees in southern Canada died.
Sam - what kind of baler were you using in the OP?
Mark, that's a NH BR7090. My dad found a deal on a slightly used one from ND.
Thanks for sharing the pics y'all. Very nice.
^Darmit I gotta go to work and i gotta look at that right before I leave!^
Sam;
Good afternoon to you my cyber friend, I trust you've had a good enough day and this finds you folks well.
Thanks for the thread Sam, these are some of my favorite and I'll give it a bit of a bump to see if we can get some evening traction.
Since you've started this thread and the fine visual feast put forth by you and our 'Fire companions inspired me to do so, I dragged out the pocket camera this morning, snapped a couple more photos and then downloaded them.
This is a good 2 hours after shooting light at 5500'- which is fairly high up in our local mountains - we live at 1400' and below. Though it's a bit hazy you can see the mountain range in the distance which is Okanogan National Forest in Washington State.

The kinnikinnick or bearberry are thicker and more plentiful than I ever recall seeing them this year.
Blue and spruce grouse really like them, as do these little fellows.

They do not however, call it bearberry for nothing as this rotund bruin is showing - he's actually lying down in a big patch.
If one gets lucky after walking down enough old skid roads like this one.
One might look up on the rock bluffs and see a couple rams bedded down.
Then again you might just find some of these. That's my bandanna beside them - about to be used as a carrier device.
They get turned into late breakfast - which is much appreciated even though I didn't come down off the mountain with meat on my back.

Anyway Sam, here's the last shot - me waving hello or goodbye - whichever suits the occasion I guess.
Thanks again for sharing a bit of your fall with us Sam and thanks to those who have joined in as well and still might.
All the best to you all in your hunts this fall.
Dwayne
Damn you.
Excellent photo's Dwayne! Thanks for sharing.
I tried to take a picture but a gang of gnats and mosquitoes beat me up and stole my camera. Fall doesn't get here until the end of November!
Dwayne, thanks for the great pictures and short stories.
Dwayne, thank you again for some great pictures of beautiful country!
And thanks Sam for starting this!
And all who have shared so far............
tzone;
Thanks for the reply sir, it's my hope you and yours are doing acceptably well so far this fall.
If I can be allowed a wee "laugh on me" tzone....... as I drove into the yard this morning this was the reception committee! They are parked atop my favorite Douglas fir tree which stands at the top of our driveway.
So turkey vultures are sorta new to our neck of the woods - as are turkeys for that matter. Both I believe have moved north out of Washington state in the last couple of decades.
Anyway I had to snap a photo of them and then I'll admit I double checked the mushrooms I'd picked this morning - to ensure the buzzards didn't know something I didn't!
Thanks to you and the other posters who offered kind words for my photo efforts.
All the best to you all this fall and good luck on your hunts.
Dwayne
Very funny Dwayne!
Thanks againg for sharing pictures from your side of the world. I like to see how/where the others hunt. I know one thing for sure, there is a lot of beautiful country in North America. I'm going to do my best to take the family to see it!
How has the hunting been so far for you and the girls Dwayne? Fantastic I hope!
TOm
tzone;
Thanks for the reply Tom its good to hear from you.
Our youngest did hunt a wee bit last year, but was kept busy with school, sports and life in general so didn't cut a tag. She's in Grade 12 this fall - where DID the time go - and decided to not hunt as on top of everything else she's got a part time job.
Our eldest has returned home after a bit of a stint in Great Britain and is working towards her next overseas adventure - but she is hunting with me this fall and that's been a real nice blessing as we both thought last fall might be our last full season together.
Anyway sir, with her permission I post her and her ride - complete with it's own Dead Sled strapped to the top.
We've been getting out quite a bit actually and although we've not cut a tag yet we both could have on black bear and chose not to - which is cool with me either way.
We've also been seeing a good number of smaller mulie bucks - season on less than 4 points opens in October for us - as well as seeing enough elk to make it exciting. No 6 point bulls sighted yet, but it's fun to watch them even if they don't have enough points to shoot. It strikes me it's a lot less work that way too.....
If we do end up getting something for the freezer we'll try to get some photos and put them up here.
All the best to you and yours Tom.
Dwayne
Sam, great idea you had. I really like your place too. Wish I was younger. Too old to work as hard as you do. Hope you have a great fall, hunting.
Fall here means a lot of long days and short nights. (With the promise of some elk hunting in November when the work is done)
Plainview, the days are getting shorter for sure, sucks to get home and it's dark at 7:30!
Marlin, hardest part of work lately is the damn allergies. Haying and harvest is not good for asthmas.
Dwayne, thanks for the excellent 'walk' through your day, great pics!
(we have a resident flock of those turkeys vultures/buzzards(?) as well, they've turned into a running joke between my dad and I)
Here's a few from yesterday. Slight change of pace from your beautiful country...

Looks like you rescued the G15, Sam!
Great pics, as usual. They give a good feel for your part of the country. Keep em comin'...
You should invite the American Pickers guys out there. You might have some valuable 'collectibles' lying around!

Great post and pics, Dwayne. You have some beautiful country up there. Don't know if there are any posters I enjoy reading more than yourself. You are truly a blessing to this forum.
Thanks for the stories and pics, good sir...
Chris
You're a helluva photographer Sam. Thanks for sharing. Always good to look back at what came before.
When fall shows up, I'll let y'all know.
Fall is indeed here and with PhotoBucket working (temporarily) here's a quick shot looking out my back door.
We'll get some fall rain soon and all that grass will green up again before winter sets in. It's really pretty when that happens.
My favorite time of year...
From an Early Muzzle loader trip a few year ago back into 5 Ponds.
Where would that be, exactly..?
Like the Lefty Hawken...
Packing a bull off the mud flats at Kachemak Bay
Illiamna across Cook Inlet
Great pics all, thanks for posting!
Mojo, everything on the G15 works except the flash, which is fine.
We were out at a friend's farm, insane amount of old iron, buildings, pickers would love it. Top secret location way out in the hills....grin
Ethan, the only thing I know about using a camera is subject matter makes 99% of an interesting pic.
Old 'junk' has always kinda fascinated me. The build quality on most of that old stuff is really good.
Fall showed back up today. It felt halfway chilly this morning.
Today as I parked my trailer in camp
First snow last year, my back yard.

5 Ponds Wilderness in the Adirondacks. About 5 miles from the closest road. (yes you can still get that far from a road in NY)
Sharptails in September. The old fellow is 11 this year and is deaf. He is pure visual in tracking where I am and still gets on the birds. Just stays closer now.

Outstanding pictures!
Started chopping a little corn.
Good looking corn Ben, any idea on yield?
Helluva stand, little greener than ours!
We didn't dodge the frost a couple weeks ago, got zapped pretty hard but that's the way it goes.
A little fellow packing away the calories
A big fellow that was burping away looking for a cow. I was able to get his attention long enough for a couple of frames. Moose are just starting to go into the rut here.
He had enough and left for the trees
Man what a fine looking animal....

Best Dove/Duck hunting I ever got into was when the dairy behind my boss's house didn't get 80acres of milo silage cut before frost.
I've never seen so many birds, that late in the season in one spot.
Had to be what hunting passenger pigeons was like 200 years ago..
Damn, that bull moose is a frikken' healthy beast, look that the shoulders on that thing!
Great pics Hugh.
Sam suppose we could cross the moose with Angus, and make a few bucks raisin' them for hunting stock?

Richard, I believe that's called a buffalo......grin

Sam we had a really good recovery on moose on prairie habitat This one was in Central Albert down in the Battle River bottom.
Thanks for the comments on the photo's Both the wife and I try to take good memory shots
Blue and Gold...
Sam, those pictures of old iron made me think of this one my Daughter-in-Law took on an antelope hunt several years ago. Got to get back out there one of these days.
Sam, I'm thinking you'd make a hell of a picker!!! Great photos.
A view from the yard at camp, taken a Fall or two ago.
Thanks Marlin, I am lovin' pronghorn pair and old truck that Ole posted.
Ole, those old grills look like a shield emblem, and still shiny after all these years!
A little of fall from my world in Michigan....
A little work last week.....
A little play this weekend....
And a little thought...thinking of letting this Rem 700 Mountain 7X57 go.....
All great pictures gents.
Nothing like old trucks and fall...
All great pictures gents.
For sure Richard, great variety. Lots of cool pics. Awesome lake pic SSB, and I don't even want to know what the machine costs!
Shrapnel, I still can't believe you shot all those windows out....grin
a few from today
This one makes me chuckle..Middle of nowhere, to my knowledge there are maybe two people that live in this 50 mile long valley, none full time..Good thing there is a community watch ha.
I shot the birds, Travis shot the truck...
Sam, I wish I was closer to that old Moline...My family had a Moline dealership from the late 30's to the late 60's... We have an "Old Equipment" collection of sorts. Misc. stuff of all makes and a cast iron seat collection with 1500 specimens. It would fit right in. Looks like a UB crank start....
Roscoe, sweet field pic, the hills in the background look like they could be good hunting!
Shrapnel, judging by the amount of orange Flave was sporting, I'd wager he thought you were going to shoot him....grin
SSB, I know the owner of the property and will let him know. He's an uber collector of everything.
Hey, guys - CCCC could have all those old trucks prettied up and running fine in short order!
The man is a wizard!
Great thread!
Thanks to all for sharing some wonderful pics.
Sharptails in September. The old fellow is 11 this year and is deaf. He is pure visual in tracking where I am and still gets on the birds. Just stays closer now.
What kinda dogs are those?
These are all great pictures. As the gent in texas said, I will also alert you to when fall decides to show up. Gonna be 100 again this weekend. Been mild all summer until the very end.
Great stuff, all. Good thread and thanks, Sam.

Nova Scotia duck tolling retrievers, maybe?
A couple weeks ago in Newcomb and Tahawus, NY.
Lunchtime walk today
NW WIs. last weekend.
Indeed Bob!
Steiger Tiger for the win!
We drove on a corn mound for 9 or 10 hours today, didn't tip over that was good!
(beer(and whiskey) time...........)
Not as scenic as all the foliage either, thanks for the great pics!
(first snowflake of the year about half hour ago...)
I shot the birds, Travis shot the truck...
Is Travis that goofy lookin sucker?
A little fellow packing away the calories
A big fellow that was burping away looking for a cow. I was able to get his attention long enough for a couple of frames. Moose are just starting to go into the rut here.

Fine looking moose indeed, I will be out this weekend trying to find one like him to stick an arrow through!
Yeah, the one with a gun....grin
Crappy Bobcat pic. But its pretty rare to see then around here.
Sam, corn looks greener on the pile than on the stalk.
Ben, I've never spotted a bobcat in my life, that is cool!
Yeah, pile is surprisingly green.
Nice to have that done.
Yeah it was pretty neat. It was the first one I saw hanging out. Usually they are crossing roads or hauling ass through the hay field.
We've only got a bit our silage done. most is pretty green, we'll probably start chopping again Monday.
55 or 60 years ago my grandpa shot one about 1/2 mile from the corn pile. That is the only one I know of on the riverbottom. We get the occasional report of a mountain lion but I've never spotted one of those either.
Bears and bobcats..... Damn Ben, you have a pretty good spot over there!
Saw a cat up on the milk a year or two back. That was about a week after I said "I've never seen any fuggin' cats up here."
Whoops.
Great thread.
Travis
Tracks out south of the lake are the closest thing I've seen.
Dude, great time of the year...
I've never seen a Cat either.
Yeah right.....grin
What does one of those prime furs go for anyway?
A bobcat bomber hat would be Uber sweet.
The Cat frenzy's tapering off but I wouldn't waste an XL MT Cat on a hat.
A nice wide spotted belly should still fetch 500+ this year.
Sam
Thanks for the thread. Nice to see the fall & harvest from so many different locations that I would not normally have the opportunity to visit. Makes me dream of that pheasant hunt that I was always going to do. GW
Good point.
That and a $500 fur hat will either get you robbed in town or mistook for a deer and decapitated out in the woods.
Oldtimer, it's never too late...
Pheasant season opens up here in on the 10th.
Where are you located? GW
Good point.
That and a $500 fur hat will either get you robbed in town or mistook for a deer and decapitated out in the woods.
LOL,,,, life's tuff out west.
Beautiful farm county. Can't beat those harvest pictures. Beats the heck out of my hay bale pictures. No pheasants in this area of sw Missouri and not enough quail to hunt them. Plenty of whitetails, coyote, turkey, few elusive bobcats and black bear. Thanks again GW
Yeah right.....grin
What does one of those prime furs go for anyway?
A bobcat bomber hat would be Uber sweet.
Uber hot too.
FieldGrade, it is tough for sure. Our two little (house)dogs are hell on fur hats.
Speaking of dogs...
This afternoon(corn pile tractor work) I look out the window and see our 4 horses out in the neighbor's stubble field.
WTF???
Bad timing, anyway long story short my dad's heeler rolls in (fresh)horse chit during gate repair.
I did not realize this until he had rubbed it all over the tractor seat and myself.
Oldtimer, hay bales anywhere are a good sign!
We have a few birds this Fall but not like the old days.
Bbassi, that is what awesome!
No need to stop off at the BTE when you got bassi postin' pics like that.
Fugged up and thought I'd seen a condor. Turned out to be a game bird. Live and learn.
Travis
Hey Flave,
You better clean your PM box, it is full. I need to send you a message from the Possum Lodge.
GFY
Sorry bro.
I use my box so often it is sometimes hard for me to tell it is full.
And you're right. My box was JAMMED FULL. Even overflowing a bit.
Anyway, I took a couple out of my box so you could slide in.
Looking forward to my box flashing due to 338 Rem.
Travis

I can't remember owning a dog that didn't like a fresh pile of horse chit.
Most of em just ate it but I did have a big ol Lab that loved to roll in Cow pie.
Liking the Bomber hat. Gawdawful model wearing it though.
Here's a live one from my winter quarters.
Fall harvest is moving along. Sunflowers today......photos of flaming combine coming up soon.....
Money does grow on trees. ;-{>8
I've never seen a Cat either.
Linx are the only cats up here (officially) and supposed to be fairly uncommon to come across.
And when and where do I spot one? Stalking it's way down a snowbank on the side of the highway during the evening commute home!
Out hoofin about today in the hills. Gorgeous weather. Scared up two nice freezer bucks...got away in the thick stuff no no pics. Wish I would've drawn a tag in this area. Nice and close. Oh well..
In the thick...
And coming out on top at about 7300'...
Some wide angles to give a feel for the country...
.
Great pics all, thanks for sharing.
Cool to see everybody's country.
Ben, that must be a newer loader....
The connections are all cleaner than our greasy old tractors....grin
Snorkel that is some great looking country.
For the question on my dogs sorry for delayed response - Yes they are Nova Scotia Duck Toller's.
Sam thanks for putting up a great thread.
When you harvest Sunflowers by Moonlight do they become Moonflowers.......?
Only decent pic I've taken this fall. Few weeks ago.
We had a fall once... maybe '89...
We may not get alot of color change, unless you don't walk careful... then there will be some red...
Great pics everybody!
More like Fall everyday, hardly any mosquitoes or grasshoppers left around here.
Just spent a long weekend in the upper peninsula. Lots of color up there-
Up...
Great pics everybody!
More like Fall everyday, hardly any mosquitoes or grasshoppers left around here.
Ditto on the pics.
Summer still has a pretty good grip on us down here. Highs in the mid to upper 80s. Lows around 70. My okra is about 7' tall and still growing. I'm beginning to wonder if we will have fresh okra for thanksgiving. Hopefully it will be cool enough for a pot of gumbo.
The fall colours are hanging on well here.
Same maple, different angle, different day.
Bruin, great maple!
(we had one in our backyard but it only made it 2 winters before it croaked)
Rancho, cool character, wife called him Cheeto!
Bama, perfect weather here lately, last couple days have been beautiful. 30 through 60's.
Cane, great pics, get those bales hauled damnit.....grin
That's our plan for the weekend, finish hauling hay. Pheasant season opens today though, might bring a shotgun in the truck.
Still lots of color in the leaves from here to Billings.. Wind hasn't blown them off yet.
One windy day here and I'm gonna have to hand wife the rake.
Took this one yesterday. Too tough for combining in the morning so I went for a walk. No birds other than one grouse who got up 200 yards ahead of me.
Up...
Gorgeous.
Travis
From my pre-game beer run.
Finally cooled off enough to ride the pony again.
Excellent from all, keep more pics coming!
Only bird of the day.
Hit him first shot when they flushed about 40 yards across a steep little coulee. He hit the ground running and luckily the grass was thin enough I see could him go. Shot 1 or 2 more times and each time a dust cloud right behind the rooster. Last shot I lead him about 1 yard and plunk.
It sounded like WWIII for a few seconds.
After I talked to you on the phone it got windy as chit.
Shot at one more rooster and wasn't even close, he was hauling ass with the breeze.
Jumped some huns and they were +50 yards before I even had the gun up!
There go all the leaves!
I'm getting antsy. Need to go kill something..

Thanks for posting, fun to see all the different chit going on with people that actually go outside.....grin
Early last Thursday I drove my dad's pickup and trailer out to the country. Wicked sunrise but of course the camera was in the wrong pickup....... Guess it's time to break down and get a God damn smartphone?!

All my pics are from a smart phone.
Mostly use it for checking the weather, looking up phone numbers, and taking pics.
Heavy frost here lately. 33 this morning.
Tore the roof off of my house this weekend, but half of my help bailed so I'm a bit behind schedule.
