i do not like wild turkey

What am i missing
Makers Mark for me
I tried that Jack single barrel and didn't like it. I don't think it's legally a bourbon anyway.

Woodford Reserve, Blantons single barrel, Elijah Craig, and Makers in that order for me unless I find something else in the future.
Knob Creek is my choice when I don't mind shelling out for it. When I'm feeling frugal I go with the Makers Mark.

What about guns, when do we get guns?
I enjoy Makers Mark from time to time.OTOH there's a cheap bar whiskey brand name Kessler's logo is "Smooth as Silk" that doesn't get the market share that it deserves.
It's a great sippin' whiskey if'n ya like good corn likker.

Enjoy responsibly.
Glenlivit single malt Scotch when I can afford which ain't often. However, the bottle comes out only on very special occasions.
Paul B.
Rare Breed for me
Don't touch it much any more, but when I did it was Early Times and swamp water.

At this time and point in life it's an occasional import or dark beer and/or glass of wine.
Crown Royal....
Jack Daniel's is Tennessee whiskey, not bourbon (which is all supposed to be made in Bourbon County, Kentucky). Most Tennessee whiskey is "sippin' whiskey", usually milder than bourbons of comparable age and effort.

I like Jack Daniel's--it suits my taste, my budget and fills the bill for me. I love the really good single malt scotches, but most are too expensive for regular enjoyment. However, I don't feel particularly deprived...
Makers Mark is the house hold everyday bourbon. On occassion I will purchase 1792 which is "Mothers Milk" by golly smooth and tasty right from the start.
Never have understood the Knob Creek thing? Never could choke it down. I usually drink my bourbon straight up on the rocks or with a little water.
MCS
On the Jim Beam lable it says" THE WORLDS FINEST BOURBON"...
I've never been one to argue with a lable...
Makers Mark for quality.....
Beam for quantity....
Macallan, Balvenie Double Wood, Glenmorangie (I like 'em all), Glenfiddich 15 and 18, Laphroig, Talisker ... in no particular order.

Make mine Scotch.

Rick
I used to think Scotch was for wimps, but if Rick likes it..... I guess I was wrong!!
284, I'll ditto your take on Kessler's. Nice and smooth.

We usually have a bottle of Old Crow around at elk hunting camp. "That crow can't fly on one wing", so the first shot obligates you for the second.
Crown , Gibson's Finest second.
As I get older, I am becoming more of a snob. I prefer Woodford Reserve to anything else I have sampled.
Tired of beer???????? GTFO !!!

Seriously, a sip or 2 of southern comfort is good. It will mix with just about any soft dring you may have on hand.

I have a half pint left over from last summer, that is all of a sudden starting to sound appealing. Thanks for starting the tread, fathers day to boot !

Anyone that can drink Scotch is more of a man then me. I've said it before and I'll say it again, everytime I try Scotch I have to lick my azz to get the taste out of my mouth........
I like single malt scotch, preferably 12 yr old. I like the highland malts best. I used to have a fair collection of different malts, right now I have 2. Better than none.

Not true. It doesn't even have to come from Kentucky, let alone a particular county.

+1, on the OLD WELLER, Smoooooth!
For an everyday, drink it neat wiskey, Seagram's CANADIAN HUNTER.
I like Bourbon Whiskey and Single Malt Scotch.
Favorites are Old Fitzgerald 1894 and Knockando
My order thus far would go like this

Jack Daniels - Single barrel
Knob Creek
Jim Beam Black
Jim Beam
Jack Daniels
Kessler-- this is what the good ole boys that i know drink in tennessee cuz its cheap as hell

I do not care at all for wild turkey
i have not tried makers mark but i know it is extremely popular. This weekend was the 2nd time i had knob creel, drank it off and on and switched back and forth with jack and preferred the knob to regular jack. Single Barrel still sets my standard but it is expensive....39$ for a 750. I think Knob is about 10$ cheaper for a 750.

The difference beteween bourbon and tennessee whiskey :Charcoal-mellowing refers to a process used to make Tennessee whiskey, such as Jack Daniel's. The process involves slowly dripping the newly made whiskey through giant containers hard-packed with 10 feet of sugar maple charcoal. The process takes ten days, and during this time the whiskey absorbs the essence of the charcoal, refining the spirit and giving it a unique flavor and aroma. Bourbon comes out of the barrel straight into the bottle
Now THAT was funny!

Rick

You have good taste, friend. I also like The Balvenie Double Wood. Another brand of single-malt I found that is drinkable yet inexpensive is called McLelland. It is about $20 in MI and I much prefer the Highland variety. It's not The Balvenie, but it's not $85 either.
Maker's Mark
Whiskey's are like optics. Any "quality" product is a million dollars better than a "cheap" one, but...an excessively priced one is about a dime better than a quality one. The cost of whiskey is directly related to the distilling process. The more times it is distilled, the more it will cost. Alcohol is a product of sugar and yeast...period. The distilling process takes the alcohol form the "mash", and seperates the ethanol (good) from the methanol (bad...hangover) alcohol. If you pay too much for whiskey, it is for vanity sakes only. Too little, and it will hurt your head. I wish my knowledge of sporting clays was as good as that of whiskey!
Steelhead, Weller is something I found years ago, when living in Texas. It has its own unique flavor, which I and many of my friends are partial to. While it comes in several varities, I find I like the 107, which is the proof. Definitely a sipping whiskey as any mix other than a little water, covers its fabulous flavor. Seems like it is only 20 per bottle so quite cheap for what you get. It certainly suits me! JMHO TM

I'm inclined to believe, for malt whisky at least, that a more substantial part of the cost comes from the speculative nature of producing something to be sold to satisfy a demand yet to exist until 12 or more years in the future.
Alcohol tastes the same from day one...never changes. The alcohol is where the production cost applies. The "adulterants" in any beverage give it it's taste. "Twelve year old" whiskey can be made in a day. You may be charged more however...if somebody actually has to store it for 12 years before they sell it to you. I know, charred oak barrels, etc, etc.

I believe you are correct sir. God knows I pay more for the 18 year old stuff............

Franklin County Va.'s finest beats all the rest though I'd not turn my nose up at JD green lable or Crown or McClellands Single Malt or a slug of Jeramiah Weed........

The guy who makes a true representation of 12 or 18 year old Highland Park, The Macallan, et cetera in a day, and sells it at the midpoint between his break even and the market price of the real thing, will make a mint. Who's gonna step up and do it?
It's hard to beat a few fingers of Glenlivet 12 or 18 ... I'm quite a fan of a good single malt scotch, and that brand does it for me ... Bourbon is generally too sweet for me, and I don't prefer mix my whiskey with anything other than a little ice, or perhaps a splash of soda ...

However, I'm not monogamous with the scotch, as my heart has a soft spot for tequilla ..............

Tequilla....jeezus...

Baaad things happen when I come into contact with that stuff....
It has a marvelous effect on some women. I call it Mexican Panty Remover.
I used to drink scotch exclusively, but it got to the point where I couldn't stomach the cheap scotches and couldn't afford the good ones on a daily basis....so then I started drinking Bourbons...having no palate developed, I was an open book.

Jack was good, but as expensive as good scotch, where I settled was with Old Crow...it has a little attitude, but then that's ok, some others were watery tasting, others too smooth to really get a feel for. Now it the Dirty Bird, or single malt scotch, preferably Islay
Hey ... don't get me wrong ... I don't sit there with a bottle of the stuff and work on it until it's dry ... I just said I actually enjoy the taste of it ... I little bit in a glass with a lime and some salt to compliment it ... or in a margarita ... it IS good stuff ....
tequilla makes her clothes come off...... or so the song goes.

Make mine single malt please. Preferably Glenmorangie in any year.

Mac
Always liked W.L. Weller. It's a "Wheated" burbon. Exquisitely smooth...on the rocks, or with a splash of water. One of those rare good AND cheap things.
You mean Tequila?

That is the only alcohol that sneaks up on me. I can drink 10 shots and be perfect then it just hits me and I go from fine to completely naked, painted from head to toe in MECURICHROME running down the street screeching like a parrot....
This was YEARS ago but I believe I kept my panties on. The last time I touched that stuff, I was told later as I couldn't remember exact details, I nearly succeeded in running my ex ol' lady off the road in her pick up....

I was driving a 440 El Tigre air cooled and it was near 25 below that night....
Dang, $85 for Balvenie!!

I was just at the local Trader Joe's and they were selling it for $33.

Seems like the mint can be made right there.

Last year on our way to Montana, we stopped in Gillette to fill up an ice chest, etc., and ran into a place that had a great selection of Scotch. They had Glenlivet French Oak for $22. On the way home, I made a point of stopping there again and bought their last four bottles, and Dad found his favorite Bushmills single malt Irish and took two bottles of that home.

I guess a deal is where you find it.

Cool! I used to like to trim the hedges in front with one of the electric jobbies. At 3:00 A.M... Or so I am told.

White lightning is good, but availability is nix for all practical purposes up here. But in a pinch, Bacardi 151 will fit the bill for pure burn and bang for the buck. There's also a noxious poison that can be had in Mexico that is as close to pure, unadulterated alcohol as you can get, distilled from sugarcane -- available in the pharmacy no less--that is well-known to the locals as a dual purpose alcohol. Good for disinfecting, and to cure what ails you! Problem is that the next day, you have bigger fish to fry trying to survive the hangover. I vaguely recall being stunned to find that when mixed with OJ, it immediately both separated into a oil and water looking potion, except that the OJ turned into a coagulated cloudy orange sludge on top. Good stuff. Just watch the smoking near it.

Oh, and as to the actual; question: JD works fine for me as far as bourbon, but I too am a single malt Scotch man. Talisker is the best value for quality out there, IMO. I will have to chastise your opening comment, however: a man sick of beer isn't trying hard enough!

Cheers.
Henry McKenna is my choice.

Now that you mention it, that's some kind of smooth drinking going down and yes it's definiatly Sippin Whiskey, but man o man can it ever build a fire when it hits bottom.
I like McKendric Whiskey, made in Abilene, Texas. Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, Weller's, Rebel Yell, and Old Crow all have their place.

I am also piratical enough to drink rum. I prefer Captain Morgan's company, but will also drink Bacardi.

Sauza is some awesome Tequila.
Why limit yourself to blue agave? Some of my best visions were with Mezcal.
Too, too many great whiskys to pick just a handful... Highland Park 12 was a shock when I first tried it and cannot think of another 12 that is close to that smooth. The Glenlivit french oak finishes are exceptional (a gift bottle of 21-year-old Archive Glenlivit at several times the money cannot compete). Several cask strength bottles from several different distillers have been very special and none have been losers.

The McClendens in several varieties were bad failures as a single shot will leave me with a splitting head in the morning.

I agree with Mathman that good whisky cannot be made overnight...

I've got two cask strength malt whiskies in my collection right now. One is a Laphroaig that comes in just above 111 proof, 55.7%. Not rough at all, but not for the faint of heart either. Only real Islay fans need apply. My other cask strength selection is also a single cask bottling. It's an exquisite Macallan fron a single cask selected by the propreitor of Royal Mile Whiskies in Edinburgh, Scotland. It's 54.8% and full of flavor. Rest assured, neither was made overnight.

I got two words for ya'll on bourbon-

Evan Williams.

Made in Heaven-how can you beat that?

WB.
You really are missing something if Wild Turkey doesn't do it for you. Make sure it's the 101, not the 80(?). Gotta love that vanilla bouquet!
WT's Rare Breed is OK to me, but I can taste a bit too much alcoholishness. That's my complaint about most of them- they taste tinny like alcohol.
Maker's Mark would be my #2.
Kessler's is a surprise.
I like me a good JD, or if I'm not feeling completely up to it a JD and Coke.

Now about 40 miles down south of here, on a 200 acre tract in the hills lay a few tanks and copper tubing. They bottle the stuff with whole peaches inside. take a sip, and a bite of peach and just you wait about 5 minutes.

Just out of curiosity, I did my own side-by-side blind taste tests of several brands a few months ago.

Among bourbon, Maker's Mark came out on top; in fact, it was easy to pick out of the lineup. Evan Williams beat Jim Beam, and EW is now my "everyday" bourbon. (I was surprised how strong a chemical taste Beam has, with or without ice.)

Not included in the test, my wife gave me a bottle of Blanton's for my birthday. That's good stuff, though I only break it out for special occasions.

I also like Irish whiskey, neat -- possibly better than bourbon. I strongly prefer Bushmill's to Jameson's. If you're in the mood for a special treat, try the Bushmill's 10-year-old single malt. Yum.

JF
Evan Williams.. Similar to Jack D, but MUCH smoother and more flavorful.. Since I found that I've had nothing else..
Maker's Mark + 1000
Jack Daniels has changed from what it used to be. the original "old No. 7" was 90 proof. later it went to 86 proof and recently is now 80 proof. I believe this was for profit obviously. I think Jim beam Black is a good lower end "everyday" bourbon unless you can afford something like knob creek....
Is anyone else enjoying Buffalo Trace?
No, but I used to like Sheep Dip.

What am i missing

Early Times
Never seen it...
when i used to drink, old forester for mixing with ginger ale; wild turkey 101 straight up for sippin', tequila chilled in the freezer straight up for partyin'.
ai, chihuahua. like steel says, it sneaks up on ya. got into it one night about 25 years ago. didn't feel a thang more than halfway through the fifth. couple or three of more shots, and i was 30 feet up a walnut tree. still don't know how i got down.
tequila and mezcal are different animals ...
Bourbon: Maker's Mark
Sippin' Whisky: Geo. Dickel
Scotch: Laphroaig
Johnnie Walker, Red's fine but Black's a lot better, also drink Maker's, Knob Creek, etc.

Now I'm thirsty.
To be a "Bourbon" it should come from Kentucky. It must be aged in "new" charred oak barrels for a minimum of 24 months. One guide said it "must be made in Kentucky" another said it didn't have to be but it all was. kentucky has Limestone filtered water and no iron.
With that said, I love Bourbon and don't really enjoy Tenessee whiskey. Canadian Whiskey is OK.
I like Booker's, Baker's or Basil Hayden if I just got a raise. Jim Beam or Maker's if I am in a bar and on a budget.

Have you ever tried Heaven Hill? Big distillery in Kentucky that makes Evan Williams, etc.

If you like Crown Royal, try Canadian hunter. Similar taste but 1/3 of the cost.
Summer, winter, spring or fall, bourbon is always my choice. With that being said, I drink Jim Beam. If I want something different then I drink Bookers.
I guess Alberta Springs is supposed to be one of the bests Rye's around lately. I'm like Steelie, Crown & Coke for me. I can do Scotch & ice, usually Glenmorangie, but not very much. I must be a lightweight...

SS
I like Bookers on the rocks or with a dash of water. At 126.9 proof it's a bit hot to sip neat.
Basil Haydens is a damn fine sippin whiskey, Knob Creek is mighty tasty also, just a bit stout for sippin'. I don't know what it is with Jack Daniels though, I can drink Crown or Basils till the cows come home, and be fine the next day(just not as early as when I was younger )but one friggin shot of JD and I am out of commission for at least a day with a pounding headache. Strange, but thats ok, I never really liked the charcoal taste anyway. C-
I'm partial to Jamesons Irish whiskey and Gibsons Finest, sterling label.
I am a relative newcomer to whiskey as I just started drinking it about 5 years ago. After trying several brands, I really like Makers Mark. The Canadian blends are popular with the under-30 crowd but I find them too sweet and pale. I don't like a rough whiskey but I like some flavor. I read somewhere that a Makers fan could drink Old Forester if he was short on funds. I bought some, and have since bought several bottles when feeling "cheap." I like my whiskey with ice or in a manhattan.
Jim beam black
Jim beam
Jack Daniels
Southern Comfort

all in that order, I'm a cheapo I guess, but I really like it.
The Glenlivet.
I saw that a lot of the Scottish distilleries use the barrels from bourbon makers since they don't have to use new ones every time. So a lot of that fancy scotch is aged in barrels that say Jim Beam or Ezra Brooks on the outside.
I have visited this and a number of other firearm and hunting message boards for years and never regestered on any or posted until now. I can't believe it took all of these posts for someone to mention Ezra Brooks! Ezra and Capt. Morgan rum are the extent of the hard stuff here, but I never get tired of Yuengling Lager. You won't hear much from me, takes too long to type.
In college every experience I had with Jack Daniels was negative, so I simply can't touch that stuff.

Glennfidich is definately some nice stuff.

Lately it's been Captain Morgans and lime juice, also goes good in the winter as a hot buttered rum, or with hot coco.

Looks like I need to broaden my horizons
I don't see how anyone could drink Southern Comfort. That stuff tastes like cough syrup.

Of course,I know a lot of folks who like cough syrup,so maybe I'm wrong.......

Thats correct...they burn 'em out with peet moss before using them. That's where the "smoke" taste in scotch whiskey comes from.

Nope. The smoky taste in scotch comes from the kilning of the malted barley. After it germinates, the barley is kilned to kill it and prepare it for fermenting into the beer that is later distilled. Traditionally the kilning is done over a peat fire, and the barley is exposed to the smoke. More or less exposure to the peat smoke provides for varying levels of phenols in the kilned barley. These phenols are the smoke in the bottle.

Some scotch isn't smoky at all, Glengoyne being a superb example of an unpeated malt.

For malt whisky we're talking about a batch loaded pot still. Hopefully the stillman was skilled and vigilant enough to keep those foreshots and feints away from the center cut of the run.
My readings have indicated they avoid most, but there are still many and that is one big benefit of the charring? I am no stillman, though oft I've craved to do a simple run...

Since some of your teams are now in the Big Twelve, you'll know what I'm talkin' about: I have trouble enough with some of the visions I get whilst not even drinkin' Tequila. You've seen the Nebraska Cornhusker Cheerleaders haven't you? Talk about corn fed...
Southern Comfort is a drink unto itself, kinda like Brandy. It's great with coke or by itself. All my people were from the South, so I guess it's a southern thing.

I don't see how anyone could drink Southern Comfort. That stuff tastes like cough syrup.

Of course,I know a lot of folks who like cough syrup,so maybe I'm wrong.......

WB.

Yep, Southern Comfort is nasty stuff IMO. I do love Wild Turkey 101.
Glenlivet straight up or on the rocks
Beam and diet coke
Jose or Sauza Commemorative straight up
Cruzan rum (if I drink rum it has to be Cruzan) and diet coke
Finlandia and OJ
Jim Beam Black or W.L. Weller are my favorites.

But I ain't tired of beer.
Canadian Mist or Jack Daniels
I'll have Myer's & coke with a slice of lime. "Light" Bacardi might as well be rubbing alchohol. For me, Captain Morgan is too hidden by the "spice".

For Bourbon or Tennessee whiskey, make mine Jack Daniel's.

Nothing wrong with Vodka tonic or Gin & Tonic in the summer.

Heh, those young ladies are indeed a vision to behold! Kinda makes me wish I was young and single again.

Hahaha, I just noticed the scoreboard- you got me on that one!

You mean to say you didn't enjoy the vision of A&M's yell leaders?
I can understand that.
Depends on what's available when I want a drink. Jack D Black was good for years but price went up, switched to Evan Williams and they cut the 90 proof back to 80s and upped the price so I switched to Ezra Brooks 90 proof. All whisky is good with a mixer like coke, in fact Acient Age makes coke KING. Crown Royal eraces the memory and I can't afford to loose any more so I just stick with Ezra and coke, (double or tripple), when I drink, I drink. When It's cold weather and straight sippin is good, I will go with a good smothe blend 80 proof. Any good high dollar sour mash burbon is not made to mix with anything but water, ice, or your stomach. JMO -- no

Jack was good, but as expensive as good scotch, where I settled was with Old Crow...

Old Crow? I thought I was the only guy in the world that drinks that stuff.
And since when did Jack get as expensive as good scotch? Single barrel maybe, but not Jack Black.
Im gonna refine my original answer...

I NEVER tire of beer!

Mixin' whiskey: Jim Beam with Coke/Diet Coke/

Canadian or Blended Whiskey: Crown, Segrams 7...Crown on the rock, Segrams 7 and 7UP.

Sippin' whiskey: Wild Turkey 101 or Special Reserve in the rocks.

Mixed - Jim Beam with Diet Coke.

Straight or on the rocks - Basil Hayden
