Been a while since a cult was recognized!
This one is a real subculture IMHO. To some guys, they are "ladies guns" and in fact, the first one I considered buying I had to sit there and listen to how this "ladies gun" in a "ladies caliber" (7mm-08) was perfect for the ladies yada yada yada.... I'm 6-3" 205 lbs so obviously, cannot be the right rifle for me, right?
Didn't buy that one, but I did order a similar one in stainless and laminate, chambered in 7mm-08. Mine turned out to be a real lemon and drove me nuts for the next year sorting it all out. Crooked stock, mis-cut crown, problems around the recoil lug in the stock... etc. Add to the equation a Leupold with a problem on it and it was a real PITA. HOWEVER, once it was sorted out I proceeded to use it as my main deer rifle for the next 4 seasons and killed 6 blacktail with it in that time.
It has since been rebarreled to .358 and remains my go-to blacktail rifle by a long shot. This winter it gets a B&C reticle in the scope and it will be interesting to see what the stadia lines work out to. I think it'll be a solid 350-yard performer with that reticle.
The thing about Model 7's that I just love, and I can't really explain it much better than this- when I am carrying that little rifle, I feel like a predator. I feel like I'm a'gonna kill something. It's electric. I don't know the why's of it but it's there and it's undeniable how it affects me. Love it.
My .358 M7 is no longer a particularly light rifle. So it isn't about that, it's something else...
I know there are other guys who resonate with Model 7's in that way.
-jeff
I have 3 of them, all have been rebarreled. Picked them up cheap as nobody wanted an 18 1/2" 308 and I can't blame them.
First one was very simple, I had a M700 308 bbl screwed on to replace the shorter one, added an HS-Precision stock and I ended up with a very well balanced rifle that is a joy to shoot.
Second one became a 22-250 Kept the original stock on it but taped off every thing I didn't want pain on, wiped it down with alcohol to remove any oil and spraypainted it with primer. Next I hit it wit some camo colored splater paint. It is now my calling rifle.
Third one I sent to Montana Rifleman Co. and had it re-barreled to a 338-08 now called the 338 Federal. Not a whole lot of difference between the 338-08 and the 358win othr than when I did it it was still a wildcat and an oddity.
My stainless M-7 is also a 358. I shot a nice doe this fall using cast bullets with it too. Pretty satisfying.
I just bought my third, though I've never had more than one at a time.
The first was a blued 7mm-08 with the 18.5" barrel. I killed one deer with it, but I hunt in the wet a lot, had POI-wandering issues as the stock warpage varied with dampness, went to a synthetic, but that was a horrible club of a stock to put on a trim action/barrel and eventually I sold it.
The second was a stainless 7mm-08 with the 20" barrel and synthetic stock. I hogged out enough plastic to free float it, bedded the action, did a trigger job, and hunted hard with it 3 years and got 4 deer. Then I got stupid, didn't pay attention to barrel heat, and shot out the throat one day practicing offhand. Rather than rebarrel, I traded it. Dumb choice.
The third one I bought this week. It's the CDL version in .350 Remington Magnum. Bases are on. Rings (got too low the first set) will be here Tuesday. Did a trigger job last night. Feels GOOD. Really looking forward to taking it out but that'll be a week or more still before shooting light and my schedule work out.
Tom
CAST bullets! Very cool.
This is my rifle as a .358:
This is what mine looks like, laying on this year's monster buck:
That little deer makes the rifle look downright big! :-)
-jeff
I know what you mean about that "predator" statement.
For several years my .260 has been my go-to rifle for deer and hogs. Especially stalking hogs in thick brush. This year it has a new wooden stock to replace the noisy synthetic and will soon have a Pachmayr for the wife and my little ones.
I don't care for the skinny 20 inch barrel, but it shoots too well to take off. I would prefer a slight longer barrel for balance and to reduce muzzle blast.
stumpy
Elkslayer,
I thought real hard about 338-08. At the time I had mine redone (by Pac-Nor, in house) there were rumors afoot that the .338-08 was about to be "adopted" by someone, and I was worried- which is silly- about having a chamber that was slightly out of spec, relative to whatever the "real" chamber spec was going to be. If that makes sense.
Never have regretted .358 one iota, though! For that matter, it worked fine as a 7mm-08, too.
-jeff
Count Me in. I own 2. A 18.5" Barrel in a 308/Brown Prec. Kevlar Pounder. This is My go to rifle. You really appreciate it when You carry all day in The Hollows that I hunt. Next is My CDL in 350 Mag.. Love this one too. Recoil is not that bad, I've shot 06's that were worse. Had a 6mm When They first came out. Traded it for a Model 700. I think that The Model 7 is every bit as good or maybe even better than the Old 600 or 660.
I bought a Mag M7 SS in 300 SAUM because I could not pass it up at the price. It shoots great, handles great, great trigger, turns out to be a great caliber too. I have since bought a 7 SAUM and considering another since they are selling so cheap...
Mine weighs in at 8 pounds unloaded.
Bought a M7 SS 7mm saum last month for $499 off gunbroker. Minus the $50 factory rebate, and you can't beat that deal with a stick.
I ordered a Mickey Edge in olive green, and I'll be sending it off to get the barrel and bolt fluted, the bolt handle hogged out and a custom knob. A gre-tan pin and shroud, timney trigger, and some talley lightweights with eventually a Loopy 6x36 should make a nice pimped-up lightweight rig.
I can't wait to shoot some 140 gr. TTSX's out of it.
Count me in. I'm running a M7SS in 223 as my predator rig. Also took a deer with it this fall. Really enjoy carrying that rifle.
Well, I was well aware of the Winchester 70 cult and the Remington 600 cult, but this is my first awareness of the Remington 7 cult! Seems like everyone just has to have their own cult nowadays. I was looking at a new laminated Remington .350 REM MAG yesterday in a pawn shop in Wilmington NC; it was a Model 753 (I think) but it appeared to be based on the Remington 7 - had the old Remington 600 style rib and front sight on it. Odessa
Odessa,
Damn right! This is the age of entitlement. We get our own damn cult, dammit!
Uh... you do know the secret handshake, right? Otherwise we gonna have to ask you to leave.
-jeff
I have a matched pair of Model 7KS in .350 mag and 7mm-08, by far my favorite and most used rifles.
Nice - KS in a 350 Mag. Wouldn't mind finding a light weight Stock for My CDL.
I bought a Model 7 SS in 7mm-08 back in the mid-90's. I didn't have it for very long though; not even long enough to put a scope on it. There were two things I didn't like about it; both of which I neglected to pick up on before laying out the money and taking it home. I bought it at a big gun show, and the purchase was quick and more or less an impulse buy.
1) The trigger was mounted crooked. In other words, it was positioned much farther to one side than the other side under the trigger guard. You had to flip it upside down to really notice it though. But, still, can you say "quality control?!" 2) The bolt didn't have that little groove on the one lug like that of my Model 700. As a result, you would go to close the bolt on the Model 7 and the upper edge of the right lug would always "catch" the edge of the receiver up near the chamber end. This caused the bolt to slam and immediately bounce off of the receiver before going on in like it should. Again, not very good quality control, in my opinion.
I've never bought or looked at another one since. However, I certainly do like their concept. The new Model 7 CDL's sure do look nice, too.
Have 2 Mod 7's an FS model 18.5" .308 Win and a Custom Shop KS .350 Rem Mag. I do get that killin feelin when they are in my hands. Short, light, quick, accurate, and hit like a ton of bricks. Why bother with anything else?
7 SS in 7SAUM here as well. 5 bills shipped via gunbroker.
haven't shot it yet. gonna do talleys, hog out the factory barrel channel (not freefloated) while i wait on a rem classic from mcfamily, and either a 6x36 FX-II or a 3-9x33 ultralight.
I own many Bolt Action Rifles. My Model seven 308 is the Fastest Cycling of Them all. Faster than My A Bolt. Don't know why, But My Neighbor always thought that I was practicing with a semi auto.
I'm in...just bought a 7mm-08 with the Laminate stock...gotta get a scope for it when I get home...was thinking of a Burris 1.5x6...any suggestions?
This is my rifle as a .358:
I really like that rifle!
Guess I,m in. Several years ago I bought a M7 from Jack Foster that he'd re-barrelled to,of all things, 7mmTCU. 20" Douglas and shortened the stock so that his grandkids could shoot silhouettes. Sent me a bag of handloads in 162 and 168 gr that shoot way less than MOA. Myself I've loaded 120s at 2660fps with good ackracy. Fun and cute gun.
The M7 chambered with Rugers two new short 300 & 338 cartridges would be very nice!

Yep! leupold 2-7VXII Best glass/set-up for the 7 as well as for the money..
MM
I like the Remington 7s and have always had a few since they came out with the stainless 260 in 1997. I currently have 12 of them in 223, 243, 250-3000, 257 Roberts, 25-284, 260 (x3), 6.5-284, 7mm SAUM (x2), and 300 Savage. All are ss, except the 250-3000 and 300 Savage which have the actions from 7 Youths, walnut stocks from the standard 7s, and barrels from 700 Classics. My favorite is the stainless 7 Mannlicher in 260 that I put together from parts when the Remington Custom Shop wouldn't make a stainless 7 MS for me.
Jeff
Count me in. Got a stainless 260 on a trade a few years ago. Stiffened the forearm and full length bedded the action/barrel. Shoots well under 1" pretty much on demand. Has a Leupy VX II 2-7. Great combo.
Dave.

:-)
Awe shucks! Like I tell my Wife, if I didn't have the guns to mess with when I'm between jobs, I'd probably be hanging out in an IA casino playing craps or hanging out in some dirty garage trying to rebuild another 1970 Dodge Challenger 426 Hemi R/T.
Jeff
Another Hemi? Aren't them thangs worth hunnerts of dollars?
Keep it Up Jeff, and there will be a Slue of used Model 7's bought up to be rebarrelled to a 358. Won't be nothing left!!!
A Leupold Compact 3x9 sits on top of My 308, held down with a Conetrol Base and Rings. I like Conetrols. My CDL 350 Mag. has a Leupold VarixIII- 2.5x8. Talley Base and Tally Detachable Rings. Didn't have the Heart to take the sights off. Makes it a bit Heavy. So far, You have to love that Rem R3 recoil Pad.
Have thought about rebarrelling My 308 to a .358, but it would have to have a Octagon, and it really defeated the purpose that I originally had in Mind (1992). To get the lightest and cost effective. Couldn't afford a ULA. Model 7,18.5" Barrel,Kevlar Stock,Decel. Pad - 5lbs. 4oz.. Yeah - When You have it in Your hands - You get that Killin Feelin
THE single most "challenging" rifle I've ever owned was a SS Model 7 in 308... It started out shooting 6" 3-shot/100 yard groups... after every sort of "tuning" and bedding possible the best it would shoot was 3"!
It went back to Remington twice. They swapped-out everything on the rifle they could think of and it failed their gallery tests every single time!
To Remington's credit, it had them absolutely stumped to the point they finally cut me a refund check direct from Remington Corporate. Their customer service was top-notch at every point in the back-and-forth of the rifle.
Every other 308 I've ever owned was eager to please and I obviously got the odd lemon, but it sort of soured me to trying another M7!
So no, I guess I'm not in the Model 7 Cult membership rolls...
hmph. that's crappy to hear brad. glad they took care of you though.
Hmm: Not much difference between a latter-day M7 and my 1963 700ADL short action, 20" bbl. It's a 9" twist 6mm Rem, and has taken everything from crows and 'chucks to husky Maine deer with aplomb, shooting just three loads: an 85 Sierra, 90 Nosler, and 100 Corelocked. Floated barrel, all these years has averaged under .5 MOA. Can't complain on it. A few years ago, I gave it to my son.
He's not a hunter, but he lives in the country on 11 acres, so maybe someday he'll spot venison off the back deck, and the little blaster will speak again.
Is your 20" 700 ADL 1 of the 1st group of 6MM Remingtons that were stamped "6MM REM MAG" with the "MAG" portion x'd out? I ran across 1 of these at a gun show in Grand Island, NE, a few years ago. Either way, a 20" 700 ADL in 6MM is a pretty uncommon rifle.
Jeff
I know a Guy who has one of those 20" ADL's in a 308. And Yes- It is a real nice handling Carbine. Only one I've ever seen, and There's no way He would part with it.
Here's mine. I bought it from
Yukoner who had it built for his wife.
It features a 20" Shilen bbl in 358Win.
Brad... I could see how that would turn a gut off on 'em! Mine wasn't too far off from that but I did get it to sub-2" by the time I rebarreled it...
Not to hijack my own thread, but, IMHO a Model 7 in 358 Win is one one of the all-time great deer packages and heck... peopler SHOULD be buying up used ones and rebarreling them! <g>. I like HOW it kills them. It's extremely decisive, yet is easy on the meat. The decisivness is notable. I've only killed... I think... 6 deer now with a .358, maybe 7, but a couple of them were not perfect shots and the deer still just fell down in their tracks. The one runner I had, I've posted pistures of, and it's amazing that animal went 20 feet, but there was a swath of blood through the woods what was almost funny! What the heck, here's the exit wound (20 yards, 200 Interlock, 2600 fps MV):
Talk about "dead deer running!" :-)
-jeff
Well I guess I am a member of this "Cult" too.
Right now I have 2 Model Sevens.
7mm-08 18.5" Walnut/Blue
7mm SAUM Stainless/Synthetic (This just might be my most accurate rifle I own)
I have also owned 2 other ones.
308 Stainless/Synthetic
17 Rem. 18.5" Walnut/Blue (I would like to have that one back)
I own two, both in 260 Rem with the 18 1/2" barrel, a walnut and a youth. They are great shooting rifles when the barrels are kept cool, and the walnut stock fits me to a T. They are my favorite rifle, even though I hunt with a Featherweight -06 most of the time. That needs to change!
Count me "in" on this cult!
the wifes got a youth in 7-08 and she loves the gun, going to be sent down to Micky for a tune up and get a McSwirly one of these days.....i REALLY liked them till i picked up my Kimber.....still like the lil 7 action and am thinking one in 350 would be really nice but as far as my search for a 7 in 260, it was over when i got the Kimber for my light weight packing rifle......but after owning a 700 short and having the wifes 7 youth around to look over, for a hunting rifle and not a heavy target/"sniper" type build ill take the 7...
Hmm lets see....223, 7/08, .308, love em all....I'm in this cult thingy too I guess.
i REALLY liked them till i picked up my Kimber...
The little Kimber will about ruin a guy to anything else for the 308 based stuff...
Get one and start a "Cult Of" thread (grin)!
I'm sorta hooked on my little 308... here I have a brand new SS M70 30-06 Featherweight with Williams Oberndorf bottom metal in a McMillan Edge with a 6x36 LR Leupold in Talley Lwt's and I really am not even that excited about it... DAMN KIMBER!
I do think we are nearing the critical mass necessary for a "Cult of Kimber Montana" thread buuuuut.... it ain't comin' from me anytime soon. :-) I have myself on a strict regime for "cult of..." posts. Believe me I could keep 'em coming but folks have expressed that they find them annoying so I only post one if it really seems likely to start a nice conversation... like this one has.
Yeah, my .325 Montana has me all confused about what to do with the ol' gunsafe (over)population. I knew, buying it, that it had that potential and now here I am. Damn thing is light as a feather and giving me groups in the .5 to .75" range at 100 yards!
To bring things full circle, I could be a very effective, happy hunter with just my .358 Model 7 and the .325 Kimber... which leaves about 4 VERY nice rifles out in the cold so to speak <g>.
-jeff
And speaking of Model 7's, I just noticed that 08 is the 25 year anni.
Man I just can't believe that.
My experiences with a handfull of 7's has all been positve. Nice lil guns that all worked well.
One I had in 243 I never ever should of sold. Well at least not till that tube was toast. Then I'd of found some RE guy from Oregon to sell it to...:-)
Dober
No .243 for this dog... my deer rifles start at 7mm bore size... and I don't hunt varmints or predators so if I want a light caliber, I might as well go .223 and go fer even less recoil and expense. Ya know?
Real estate? What real estate? Nobody sellin' no stinkin' real estate round these parts right now! I'm darn near unemployed. :-/
-jeff
I have 2, a SS Syn 7-08 and a SS 25-284 soon to be in a Bansner. #3 will arrive in the next year or so as a SS 223.
I think I need a 260 to go with the 7mm08...and probably a 308...
Can't be a true cult.
True cults are always trying to get new members.
Remington doesn't believe lefties are worth the trouble.
I noticed that, myself! I've been waiting to the big debut and you hardly mentioned it
Now I'm REALLY irritated that Kimber doesn't care about lefties.
Man am I behind the loop here. I just got my first one. Nicest packing rifle I own.
Bougtht 2 ss m7s in 260 this year.
Why did I buy those heavy m700s and howa 1500s?
I'm not much on cults......but if you're in, you're in.....
Got an unfired stainless laminate in 7-08 put back in the safe for my son....he's 3 now.
Got a stainless .358 with a #3 Douglas and Mt Rifle edge stock that I've carried a few times this year.
A blued .223 has been sent off to get a #3 Douglas in .223AI. Should be getting it back this spring.
I keep thinking of building a lw .308 on one.....
Put a stainless 7-08 in a basnser stock with a timney trigger a while back and sold it. It was one sweet lightweight. It is up for sale again right now. Someone should pick it up and join the cult....or advance your current standing in the cult. The seller is a good guy but got hit by troubles. Here's a link:
https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/1870420/page/1/fpart/1
Lets see, my M7 SS Synth 260 cost $450 out the door, shoots 3/4" without doing a thing to it. And Kimber Montana cost how much??
MM
Lets see, my M7 SS Synth 260 cost $450 out the door, shoots 3/4" without doing a thing to it. And Kimber Montana cost how much??
MM
My thoughts are as such. I would want another handle for the M7 as I don't like the Syn that it comes with. For me it is right at the top of the pile of stocks I dislike, try as I may to like them. Others on the top of my list are the 700/Mtn LSS and the Winchester M70 French Whorehouse handle.
Point being I would be restocking it with an Edge, so I can call that another $475 pretty darn easily.
Oops and I almost forgot the safety, I like and would put on a Gentry 3 posi so add another $200 for that.
Hmmm, things are evening out rather quickly by my way of thinking.
Just my way.
Dober
My Montana 8400 (WSM's) cost me $1129 a month ago... I think the version comparable to most M7's is a little less, more like $1000.
BUT... let's be fair. M7's don't cost $450 right now; don't know what they cost but it's not $450. And it's not an apples to apples comparison- the sythetic stock on the Kimber is really nice- as in about $450 worth of nice if you were to buy a comparable stock for your M7. There's CRF, which doesn't matter to me but does to some folks... and the kimber trigger is about as good from the box, as a Remington trigger can be after tweaking.
But hey... I'm a M7 cult member all the way. Bang for the buck, a good Model 7 rules. I happen to like the LSS model for which there is no Kimber comparison anyway.
You know, the TSX bullet shows up on any thread about any OTHER bullet... and the Kimber rifles show up on any thread about any OTHER rifles... only one solution:
Brad, you do need to get that "cult of Kimber" thread rolling! :-) C'mon man, it was your idea, heh heh..
-jeff
for the record, my wifes Rem 7 Youth WITHOUT scope and with Remmy's synthetic stock weights more than my 84M Kimber with a 6x36 Leupy and Leupy steel mounts........thats not company advertising BS thats with both rifles in my possession comparing them side by side
sorry for bringing Kimbers into this post Jeff......just when im thinking small actions its the Remmy 7 and the Kimber in readily available actions.....as Brad says the Kimber just spoils you on 308 sized actions if their stock happens to fit you and the rifle balances well for you.....that said i am still a Model 7 fan and do want one in 350 Mag.......my wife dislikes my Kimber even though she wants as light a rifle as possible, the reason? the Kimber stock doesnt fit her at all and there isnt really anything for after market stocks that will work for her for a Kimber where its easy to find a McMillian for a Sucks 7 that will....
I guess I'm in. I have a wood stock blue .222 from several years ago. But, I'm left handed and it is right handed and never the twain shall meet.
W
rattler, I own a Kimber, love it (so far, it's only been a month or so..)
A .308 Montana like Brad's, or else the same thing in .338 Fed just to be contrary, is making me think evil thoughts... so you don't need to apologize! :-)
But up until recently the price difference put them in completely two different categories. Remmie's recent price increases are changing that some though IMHO.
-jeff
Here's my M7 thumper. 350 Mag.
Nice. I bet it thumps @ both ends. What scope is that?
So. How does it Thump? On the Recoil end. I'll bet no more than a 06 would, in that config.!!
Here is my .350 mag M7 thumper before I put a Leupold 2.5-8x on it. She kicks ass on both ends. I love it, and it has been my go to rifle this season.
Nice! Leopold 2.5x8 would be My Choice for this Combo. What's the Stock?
That's a short Vari x II 1 3/4-6 Leupold on mine. Recoil is tolerable even with the pre R3 pad factory plastic stock(8lb).
Sakoluvr, that's sweet. Wish I could find a custom shop take off for mine, maybe!
I may just have to order a McMillan for Christmas!
TK
Jumping in late, but count me in.
I only have one but it's a wood stocked .260 with a Leupold 2x7 Compact on it. Had it since 97/98 I think.
Always had a liking for that setup.
I really really like Model 7's, Wish I could own more!!! 358 & 260 Would be nice, or even the 338 Fed.. My next will have a octagon barrel!!

i feel the same as you do about my winchester mod 70 carbine.270 caliber, with the 20 inch tube.awsome rig imho.
Just a note on the price comparison in previous threads. I don't know anyone that pays list. I just purchased a new model 7 CDL for $410 after rebate. Even my wife said 'that's not bad.'
Only have one it's a 7saum topped it off with a VXIII 2.5-8 BC in lw talleys. Here's a photo of my son with it. It's nice to carry and saw alot of hunting time this past deer season.

Nothing personal, but you are a sick puppy! If you want to lighten up and become a normal looney, just send several to me and I'll give them a good home.
I have 2 model 7's, one in 308 Winchester (shoots 1" groups) and I just bought a used 260 Remington M-7; both are stainless with 20" barrels.
I really like this 308, but the 260 Remington is disappointing so far. I bought it used (in like new condition) and put an old Redfield 3x9 on top. The first dozen 5 shot groups were about 4-6 inches. I finally located some factory 260 Rem loads and I'll try them along with some other handloads.
Maybe the rifle's poor accuracy is why it was on the used rack in like-new condition.
The Model 7 Stainless is a great concept - handy and light, but if it doesn't shoot, it goes.
What's the recoil like in the 7SAUM?
I have two stainless model 7's and both have been rebarelled and restocked. One started as a .223 and is now a .223 AI with a 24" Shilen tube and HS Precision stock. The other started as a .243 and is now a .257 DGR with a 24" Douglas barrel, an HS Precision stock and a Gentry three position safety. Both have Warne rings and wear Leupold Vari-III's. Both have had triggers tuned and shoot under MOA but are heavier than I anticipated.
What's the recoil like in the 7SAUM?
depends on the bullet weight, but 120's are pretty much nothing to be concerned about.
a bit more stout than my .308, but it weighs 13 pounds.
Owned a Tractor Tralier Full Of the Modle 7's Over the Last 15 years or so. And still own Several. My go to Rig is a Built 6.5-250 Ackley. With 21" Lijia #3 Flutted Barrle. And Bolt. Mcmillan AWR Stocked. Leupold D.D.And a Swarovski 4-12-50.I've Taken Close to 100 Whitetails with this one.My Other's a Varmint rig. Douglas Built 7 in 20 TAC Dura Coated In Black. This one also Wears A #3 21" Tube. Modle 7 Mcmillian Swirly{Black -Gray} Leupold D.D and a Leupold 4.5-14-40. Less than 300 Rounds thrue this one. But it is a Shooter. Last Three Shoot Group at 100YDs Went .109 and This was with Very little Load work.I've Never found nothing not to like about a Modle 7.
What's the recoil like in the 7SAUM?
To me, shooting 160gr partitions it's about equal to my 280 with 150gr bullets in a Ruger 77.
I have two model 7's, both SS. One in 7SAUM and the other in 260. I would hate to part with either and don't intend to.
My Other's a Varmint rig. Last Three Shoot Group at 100YDs Went .109 and This was with Very little Load work.
WOW ....
.109" Very impressive.
I have a stainless 7 in 300 shamu that is dropped in a laminate stock that I traded the tuperware for straight up...It is carrying a 3.5X10 Leupie and it is tough on elk....That is my favorite Mod 7....
I've been a Model Seven fan since they started making them and was a Model 600 and 660 fan before that.
I could never understand why someone would want to lug around a heavy rifle when a lighter rifle could do it just as well and be lighter and easier to carry not to mention shorter.
The new Model Seven XCR Camo rifles are more accurate and practical than any Seven's I've ever seen except the Custom Shop offerings.
http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/centerfire_rifles/model_seven/model_seven_XCR.aspThese are my all time favorites but they're a bit pricey since last year's price increases...
http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/custom_shop/seven/model_seven_KS.aspAnd here are the newest models and they're a bit heavy but will likely be popular with the predator hunters and very accurate.

LD..that M7 KS in .350 RM has been on my "want" list forever. Just missed one on GunBroker with a 2.5-8 Leupold scope on it...the guy didn't sell it the first time around with a hidden reserve and then when I checked the new listing he had put a BuyNow of $950.00 on it and it had already been snapped up.
Proud to say I am now a M7 owner as of Tuesday... It is a 18.5" .308, polished blue with a Bell&Carlson black Carbolight stock with Redfield Base and rings in 95+% condition... For $400 OTD I couldn't say no....
Bob
RJM52,
I just checked Gunbroker pretty carefully for that sale and can't find it... Got link?

Love my Model 7 .300 SAUM and have been seriously considering the purchase of another for my son. Problem is he is only 8 months old!
Here is my .350 mag M7 thumper before I put a Leupold 2.5-8x on it. She kicks ass on both ends. I love it, and it has been my go to rifle this season.
Where did you get the end piece to the bolt handle?
I bought a wood stocked Model 7 in .308 in 1992 and it has been my main hunting rifle ever since.

Had to bring this post back up for my new toy. Ripping deal on GB I couldn't pass up.
M7 XCR in 300 WSM 7 lb as she sits.
My good camera is at work so I had to use the point and shoot, not a very wide lens. The Sightron is temporary but with 10x it will be good for load testing.
The first group with Fusions went two touching and the third around an inch out. The new x-mark trigger is OK, not terribly consistent at the moment, adjusted it down to three pounds then it jumped to 4. I've had gunk from machining cause that before and they settled down after a good cleaning.
I think I'm going to like it! Common moose season!!!
I'm a new fan of the Model Seven. I'd honestly never owned a Remington of any model until acquiring this Model Seven CDL in .350 Remington Mag (all my other rifles over the years had been Winchester M70's, Ruger M77 MKII's, Ruger No.1's and a couple of the Weatherby ilk).
Anyway, I really like this little rifle and plan to get another "matching" one in a light caliber.
My Model Seven shoots under 1 MOA with handloads and amazed me with the ease at which I could break 2,700 fps with 225 grain bullets from the short 20" barrel. Sierra Gameking Boat-tails are the most accurate in mine, but Nosler Partitions are a close second. It's one hell of a good, easy carrying gun for still hunting on those steep, dark/thick north slopes for big bull elk.

I own 2 308 m7's both with German Zeiss 4x scopes. After looking for a factory FS (18.5" bbl brown precison pounder) I bought 1 on Gunsamerica for $300 shipped 11 years ago. It's a 3/4-1" rifle. The another is a MS bought at gunbroker for $499. The MS was a 3" rifle when I bought it but the Muzzel cap was not properly installed. When this was corrected it became a 1" rifle. Both are great summer carry rifles & work great in a tight deer stand but both are hard to shoot off hand. I have had a KS but didn"t like the stock. If I could find a deal on a ms in 257 or 260 I'd buy it.
So its not a true Model 7 but it does have the action. Its a Remmy 673 in 350 Remington Mag. It has a Cabelas 2x7x32 on it now, waiting for a 3x9x32 Burris. I absoulutly love this gun! There ain't ain't elk at 200 that can stand it.
Well I guess I'll join in. Mine is a M7 SS in 308, w/ Leupold mounts, low rings and a Nikon 2-7 Monarch.
Currently sits in the factory stock. I bought a used walnut takeoff stock and refinished it in TruOil. When I get around to it I plan to bed the stock and replace the factory brown hard pad with a black Decellerator. I don't have pics or the figures handy, but I did weigh the stocks and the walnut is considerably lighter than the synthetic, enough to put the balance a bit more forward - much better IMO.
I've only hunted deer with it so have never felt the need for anything other than Federal Classic or Remmy greenbox 150s. Once I get the stock the way I want it I may switch to 165 or 180 Partitions and chase elk, especially if I have a cow tag.
Don't think I'll actually do it, but I have considered rebarreling with a slightly heavier taper or a takeoff 700 barrel cut to 21"; something I believe would help the balance even more.
My swirly finally came in.
Still waiting on an ADL trigger guard, and a gre-tan shroud/pin assembly to delete the gaylock.
Can't say I'm disappointed in how the swirly turned out.
Finally picked up a 7saum on sale last summer. Ordered a 2.5-8x36 B&C VX3 and talley lite wieghts from rick. Got a replacement stock in but haven't messed with it as I'm a little out of it right now. This is a photo of my son with the rifle last fall. The mountain in the background is Mt. McGloughlin in Southern Oregon. [img][IMG]

Here's my Custom KS .350 RM. Also have a Mod 7 FS model .308 18.5" from the late 80's (no pic). Had a .308 SS Mod 7 that I put towards the KS when I got it also.
Not sure if this counts it's only half a Mod 7. Mod 7 Edge Stock with a 700 SA TI action.
Thumper - What do those weigh? And how's the recoil on the KS? Been thinking about putting a composite stock on My CDL-350 mag.
Taconic11... The Custom KS 350 is 5 3/4 lbs naked. I believe that these stocks just have standard MCM fill in them even though they are termed "Kevlar". The recoil of this gun shooting a .225 gr NP is about like shooting a .30-06 180 gr. from a larger rifle. Something about the ergos of this stock makes the recoil feel lighter to me. However, I do prefer the feel of straight stocks without a cheekpiece and a schnabel forearm hence the chosen stock for my .358 project.
The Kampfeld .358 Win weighs 5.5 lbs naked except it is a 700 SA TI with MCM Edge Mod 7 stock.
Thanks - I feel that the felt recoil of My CDL 350, shooting 225 Sierras, is not any more noticeable than a 06 that I own. About the same.
7mm saum, edge hunter stock, karving by Kampfeld..
Got a Model 7 MS in .350 a few years ago. Wouldn't feed from the magazine but fixed that by modifying the mag box and the follower. Now feeds OK. Actual 1 inch rifle with 225 Partitions but can't seat them deep enough to fit the magazine with my seating die (Redding) so I cut the exposed lead off the tip and smooth over with a file. Now they are "protected points" I guess but those modified bullets are the ones than shoot into inch when I do my part. No other bullet does as well in this rifle. I like the rifle, short and handy. Recoil not that bad but the laminated stock makes it heavier than the KS.
Domhnall...I always wanted to try that with my 225 NP's but never got around to it. Nice to know it worked well for you.
I've been tempted to cut the plastic tips off those 225 Accubonds and try them... they are otherwise too long.
First one is a 673 in .300 saum. I pulled the rib, mounted a vx111 2.5-8 in talleys, and it's one fine carrying, quick pointing stick. Just got my second in the mail today- a laminated blued one in .243. I bought it cause the pruice was right, and figured it would be a great action for a 1-8" .22-250 project I've got in the works, but then again, I'm anxious to try a 85 tsx on a critter or two... Now to find a scope.
I have cut/Filed the tip off some 250gr.Speer Hot Cores to fit My Model 7. Shot just fine @ 100 yds.
Back up to show my babies new shoes!
M7 SAUM turned 350 mag in her new swirley. M7 pattern 40 dk grey 40 grey 20 black.
That is flat-out NICE!!!!
Thanks for sharing!
I was too stunned by it's beauty to remember to ask... what barrel did you go with? How's she shoot?
there's one major problem with model 7's and I wont buy one until they correct it. They don't make them with the bolt handle on the left side.
Doc
tkinak... Sweet! I'm diggin it. I had a chance the other day to fondle an XCR 300 WSM like yours in the local Gander. Man is that a sweet feeling rifle or what. One of the best feeling factory guns I have ever shouldered.
I've only looked at other peoples model 7 rifles casually, but I can't tell them from a short action model 700. I assume the differences are internal. What are the differences between the two?
I bought a Model 7 in May of 03. It is a SS in 7mm SAUM.
A month later a received the news that I had drawn a bighorn tag!
The rifle is and was absolutely perfect for mountain hunting.
I've only looked at other peoples model 7 rifles casually, but I can't tell them from a short action model 700. I assume the differences are internal. What are the differences between the two?
I don't know the specifics, but the M7 action is shorter still... with the necessary reduced mag well length, shorter bolt, etc.
I don't know the specifics, but the M7 action is shorter still... with the necessary reduced mag well length, shorter bolt, etc.
Mag box is exactly the same on a 700 short and a 7. Research more, type less.
Short action mag box
lol....oh well....
The M7 is shorter overall. The mag box, spring, follower are the same as a short 700. I believe the front of the action is identical to a 700. Most of the length is taken off of the rear of the reciever...it can be seen best when comparing the area where a rear scope mount goes between a 700 and a 7. The bolt is shorter. Despite the shorter length the opening for loading is slightly larger on the M7 which is kinda nice. Overall the weight difference isn't much...I think about 2 ounces. I believe the trigger is the same a the 700's, although come replacement triggers have a little extra metal on them that may not fit perfectly due to tight fit with the shorter back end....

I never warmed up to a Model 7, until they came out with the stainless laminate stocked version with 20 to 22 inch barrels...
I also got fired up when I saw the Predator version that came out recently...
the last one is the custom shop Mannlicher full stock version with a 20 inch barrel.. those are really sweet...
I hate it when they put open sights on them.. I like a clean barrel..and longer than the short 18 inch barrel...
I never warmed up to a Model 7, until they came out with the stainless laminate stocked version with 20 to 22 inch barrels...
Seafire,
Agreed, although I will say that my M7 LSS was pretty butt-heavy as a 7mm-08... if that matters to a guy. Now it has a heavier, .358 tube and it balances just behind the front action screw. Here it is with one of my monster bucks:
I've gotten that rifle soaking wet scores of days, then I get home and prop it by the woodstove and don't worry about it. The stainless laminate combo sure works great in Oregon.
I do like the stainless on lam in rifles, as my Sako 75 260, well-my sons......JeffO nice photo there, ever thought about Drilling out mass in butt of stock? Posted a thread perhaps last year on the subject, lots of replies, may can find it with a search.
Got it:
http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/1945337/page/0/fpart/1Just a thought, may have to do this Sako, I like the weight for shooting, but could be lighter to shift balance, and make handier to carry. Lam stocks seem more stable, very stable in my experience, no problems yet....yet Finn Aaggard I believe put Turtle Wax or the like on his free floated stocks, on the inside, of course you'd want to re-finish anyway if you removed varnish, but the wax would shed water/moisture and minimize problems....
And yes the McSwirleys do look nice, have PROS themselves no doubt....
I'm gonna go read that thread... but... no desire to change the balance of my M7 LSS now that it's got a heavier barrel; it feels like a killin' machine now as it is!
No I would not change it if it balances well now, my 7BR was 21" w/.700 OD at muzzle, loved it, not a lightweight, but felt right. When it was a factory M7 tube, it was way too muzzle light, and likely cost me a nice Tx buck having to shoot offhand at 150yds, I know, should have been easy, but the 4-14x was cranked up as variables often are, and the wind was howling that day at around 30mpg sideways, and the balance was far too rearward, later used lighter scope and heavier tube which fixed the balance no doubt.....live/learn.
Thanks. Nice 358-that a 3-10 or 2-8?
It's a 2.5x8. I had a B&C reticle put in it and have been having fun shooting it out to 400 yards.
Thought that was the one you had referred in the past to, just looked a tad longer I guess in that M7 platform. Nice rig. Any elk in those woods?
There's elk within, I dunno, 10 miles or less of where I sit typing... but they are coastal Roosevelts and I have not yet hunted them. I go east over the mountains (Cascades) and hunt them in Eastern Oregon. I've gotten into a lot of elk but never had the right tag for the elk I was in. (They don't really give out cow tags here, or they do but it's your ONLY tag, tend to be kind of hard to get, and use up your preference points for bull tags too, etc, so I'm not real interested...)
I have carried that M7 a couple days elk hunting, loaded with 225 Partitions at 2500 fps. I was pretty damn certain it would do me proud on any elk within a couple hundred yards!
It's not a light rifle in that LSS stock so... given it's a little range-limited too, I tend to carry other things while I'm out seeing elk I can't shoot <g>.
You may be interested to know that the concept for the Model 7 was conceived by Aussie Writer, Nick Harvey. (Nick is one of the longest serving writers extant and is nearing 50 years as a writer amd firearms reviewer.)
Nick was a .308 Norma man for big game hunting back in the early 70's when he was sent a Miroku (Browning) lever rifle in .308, a cartridge Nick, like most of us, had stayed away from as uninspiring. He found during his tests, that it killed as well as his Norman Magnum so bought the test rifle.
A few year later he got hold of one of the Remington 660 carbines and used that for a while and continually updated it changing the stock, bolt shape and a few other things until it became a smaller version of the 700 more to his liking.
Later in the 70's Nick was invited to a Remington Seminar which was attended by some of the last generation of legends such as Elmer Keith, where he extended an invitation ro the folks at Remington to visit him for some Aussie varmint hunting. This was around '77 or '78.
When the Remington people visited and saw his Remington makeover, Nick convinced them to offer a mini 700 in a new rifle.
They did and you bought it. Interestingly, Aussies continued to stay away from the smaller cartridges and action lengths.

The Model 7XCR Camo line has passed along the way of many other discontinued Model 7's but I think that, other than Custom Shop guns, it was the best of them all.
I just HAD to revive this old thread because the Model 7 is simply the finest production rifle ever made. Bar None!!!

Add me to this club. I've got 2:
- stainless synthetic 308 with leupold varix3 3.5-10x40 in leupold mounts. My lightweight thick woods gun and probably my favorite rifle I've ever owned. Thinking of replacing scope with a swaro 3-12x50 plex i've got sitting in a drawer - in my opinion that is the ultimate low light scope due to first focal plane reticle. Gun might look funny with outsized scope but I don't really need it to be lightweight - just deadly in thick woods at dawn and dusk.
- Model 7 action in 300 saum in McMillan Remington Hunter stock. Currently at the smith being rebarrelled, trued, squared, etc with a fluted 25" hart #5 and cerakoted matte black. Swaro 4-16x50 TDS4 in talley screwlocks. Looking forward to getting this one on some long range targets. Will post some pictures when she comes back. If she's a shooter I'm thinking of naming her Chocolate Thunder. We'll see.
Also thinking about a new build in 243 as a "truck" gun for pigs and herd management. Thinking of using the laminated takeoff stock from the saum noted above, adding a heavy-ish 20" barrel and either a leupold or swaro 6x42. Need to find an inexpensive used Model 7 for the donor action. My smith would rather me use his proprietary action - depends on how the saum noted above shoots i guess.

I acquired a Model 7 SS, in 7mm-08 in the mid-90s. Short, light, sweet with plenty of range. Mine is accurate also and wears a Leupold 1.5-5X. For eastern deer hunting, it's as handy as a Marlin but with the reach of a .30-06. I should sell off everything else.
Long Live the Model 7. Simple & works - very well.
Another JeffObama classic........................
It IS a nice thread, isn't it? 7 pages of polite enthusiasm for the M7, gotta love that!
Thanks for the props, VA! Your company is always a pleasure.
We may be feeling warm and fuzzy right now but some idiot will have to come along and spread a bunch of anger around. Unhappy people can't stand to see other people being happy...
I have more Model Sevens than I care to admit and have been using Remington compact rifles since I saw my first Model 600 way back in the late 60's.
Remington has finally gotten it right with the Predator and XCR Camo but the run of the XCR Camo was only a year or two. There are a few pockets of them left and I just picked up a new 7mm-08 and you can buy that one out of my estate if you live long enough...
The Custom Shop Model 7KS is a GREAT rifle too and I've had a few of them in my time. They're very accurate and repeatable due to the custom barrels, blueprinted actions and being bedded in McMillan stocks (at one time Brown Precision).
I've had Model Sevens in 350 Rem Mag, 300WSM, 300SAUM, 308 (SEVERAL), 7mmSAUM, 7mm-08 (Several), 243 (Several), and 223 and since they did away with most of the skinny barrels and went to "magnum contours" on most of them I haven't had one that wouldn't shoot waaaay better than it should.
They balance well, are light, short and handy, are often more accurate than even a 700 and are often quite well priced.
Long live the Model 7 and I hope I'll always have a few.

I love my M7 308,when I bought it I wanted a 200yd rifle for deer that was light and fast, and thats what I got, also used it for an antelope in NM.
besides it gave me a future reason to buy another rifle if I was going to go out west for bigger game.
high praise for the 7 it seems, don't know much about em though. Did they make one in a 260?
Charlie
Charlie,
Yeah... They made a bunch of them in 260. You have to be careful because some of the earlier ones had horrid barrels and shot shotgun type groups. Remington rebarreled a bunch of them and a bunch of them are probably still floating around from owner to owner to... Well... You get the picture.
The 260 in a Model 7 is likely a very deadly combination but I've never owned one.

Thank you sir. I don't know why but that 260 in a 20" barrel with a fixed 4 on top has always struck me as a consumate blacktail rifle for my area.
Thanks again for the reference material.

I think the mdl 7 is as near a pefect all around carry rifle that has been put up as a factory offering. I have two in S/S, one .243 and the other 7-08, both wearing Leupold 2.5x8 XIII's with B&C reticles. They are a joy to pack and aim like pointing a finger, plus both a very accurate. I like the 7-08 for deer and antelope and use the .243 for deer and coyotes.
By the way... I know that this isn't the appropriate place but if anyone here is willing to part with a Model Seven stainless or blued rifle in 223 (don't want a Predator and don't want another caliber) I'd really like to have it. I don't need the stock unless you just don't want it.

Exactly!
I am looking for one fo those!
I've found the Model 7 to be too short for me and the stock doesn't mitigate recoil well, at all. In fact, I know lots of folks who have tried one as a "youth" or "lady's" rifle, only to find out it kicks pretty hard, even with mild cartridges like the .260 Rem.
Comapact and handy, yes. But definitely not for everyone.
That is certainly true for the older models with the pencil thin barrels and wood stocks.
The newer models with the magnum contour barrels and the newer design stocks that are much lighter and seem to absorb recoil better it's not as much of an issue.
But there is absolutely NO DOUBT that lightweight rifles kick more than heavier rifles.
$bob$

It would zap 'em, for sure, but I have to say that my M7 in .358 sure suits ME as the ultimate blacktail whacker. I like the blood trail it gives- if they run at all. Mostly it seems to just convince them they are dead.
I've deer hunted with both a 6mm and .308 Model 7. Love them. I've heard this before about pencil thin tubes and the recoil. In my opinion the Model 7 was made as a light weight hunting rifle, which a light tube is part of the make up. I can't remember if I feel the recoil or hear the loud report from the 18 1/2" tube, when I pull the trigger on a whitetail buck. One of the best --Mountain--woods-- deer rifle here in the Northeast. I'll take an older model 7 over the newer ones. Web
Yep. But being left eyed and right handed, a right bolt is pretty natural for me. As long as the stock is straight and no cheek piece, I am good.
I bought it to kill pigs since it holds 5. And I have run them all out before!
Glad to see I am not the only one who loves their Model 7 (especially with the new barrel). It ain't that much heavier, just balances better for me.
stumpy
Had a .260 SS Synthetic 20"barrel. Paid a pile of cash for it. Tried everything to get it to shoot. Got so sick of it I traded it with a Leupold VariX III for a Ruger M77 tang safety with a bad Weaver scope. Worst gun I ever owned. Have a .204 Ruger blue synthetic 20" barrel that shoots 1/2" @ 100 easy. I only buy two brands of bolt action rifle nowadays-CZ and Tikka.
+1. My .260 kicked like a mule, and talk about muzzle blast out of that 20" barrel. The .260 came with a hard skinny recoil pad but a .204 I bought later came with the R7 recoil pad. I really needed it to tame the vicious recoil of the .204-go figure.
Love the M7 but wish they were made in a few more calibers.
A 7 in 250-3000 or 257Rbts with a 22" magnum contour barrel would be useful for so many things.
Bought a Model 7 Youth in 260 for my wife since she is recoil shy. Big mistake, like carlm says it does kick like a mule and the youth model only has an 18 1/2" barrel. Now it's my rifle and I use it when hunting timber because of its handling qualities.
Real estate? What real estate? Nobody sellin' no stinkin' real estate round these parts right now! I'm darn near unemployed. :-/

Tell ME about it!!! It's the same here and it's tearin' me UP!!!

I've got an older SS 20" barrel 7mm-08 and I think it's a great handling, low recoil rifle.
My only complaint is sometimes I wish for a little more weight up front.
I'd have to be very hard pressed and out of all other options before I ever gave mine up.
When I re-barreled mine to .358, the heavier barrel really fixed the balance. Another thing you can do, if it's in a wood or laminate stock, is drill some weight out of the butt of the stock. I did that on a Mountain Rifle LSS and it really changed the balance for the better.
$bob$, things are a little better around here since I typed that (got two in escrow right now, for example) but in general, it's been a thin year!
For all of us in the business, I suspect.
Pictures gentlemen!!!!!!
I have an extra set of Talley's that need a home a 223 or 243 ss would make them happy!
i have a 673 guide gun in 350 mag and a mod 7 in 350 mag. both just plain jane stock rifles from the boring old factory but i absolutley love them both. as far as any accuracy problems, i cant see that i ave any although i only shoot iron sights. im not a real big scope fan since all shots are usually under 50 yds up here in maine but i do think im gonna put a trijicon 1.25-4 on the m7 for this season.
If most your shot are under 50 yards, you don't need a gun. Let him get a little closer and use a hatchet.
hahaha or a decent rock eh?! its thinker then hell up here and thats where the deer head for when your trackin 'em. most often the shots are 30-50 yds and they are gettin the hell out of dodge! then its time to ratchet that little bolt and let some lead fly. now dont take that as a spray and pray method now. its just that its so damn thick thyat its hard to thread on through and hit them so its not uncommon to poke a coiuple at them it you have the time
I just couldn't help myself. I had to revive this old thread due to my absolute LOVE for Model Sevens.
I have several of them ranging from the gutsy 350RM and 300WSM to the diminutive 223 Remington and can't imagine rifles I'd rather have for any amount of money.
My latest and favorite ones are the one year production Model Seven XCR Camo and these are likely the best of the best.
It seems that Remington failed to market these rifles properly because they didn't sell well but they're easily the consumate short and lightweight production hunting rifles.
I have a few of them restocked with the excellent McMillan AWR stocks and this makes them lightweight tackdrivers of the highest order.

No more Model Seven's from remington ?
They offer very few now. The one that's discontinued and what I was referring to is the Model 7XCR Camo and IMO that's the best one they ever built. Like many great ideas it had poor public acceptance due to poor marketing and a pretty high pricetag.
It went the way of the Short Action Ultra Mags which were also a great idea that didn't get marketed well.

They had a M7 coming from the custom shop with a full walnut stock (mannlicher) that was running @ $1400.00. by the time I could talk myself into getting one, the price was over $2000. I still don't have one.
Just had my Model 7 Predator in .223 punched out to AI...one of the better decisions Ive made....REALLY fun gun ..

10-4 -remington's website no longer shows ANY model sevens .
Man i need to quit drinking !
I have 2 both 308's.. a 1987 m7FS & a late '90's m7MS. The FS was my summer carry rifle for years both are basically modern 30-30's with a few hunderd more fps. With the FS when you are ready to shoot 1st thing to do is find a rest, but that should be the 1st thing every time.
