Bolt action. Barrel no longer than 22". No magnums/AI. Flattest trajectory with 85gr-140gr bullets. Deer killer. What is your choice?
.260
6.5 Creed
6x47 Lapua
7-08
6.5 Sweed
.243
A 240 weatherby in the vanguard wouldn't suck either.
140's out of a 25 will be tough.
Long action .270 (130gr). Short action .308 (150gr).
All of the wildcats off the 284 case might be fun too.
140's out of a 25 will be tough.
Be a high bc though.....grin.
The caliber does not have to include 85gr-140gr. Any caliber that has a deer bullet in that range.
NULA 22" barrel. Factory cartridge, sighted 2.5" high at 100yds least drop at 300yds. Low recoil.
Dude...you've narrowed it down to one cartridge.
7mm-08. Lotta bullet options, flat shooting, and easy to reload accurate ammo.
6mm Remmy. LOW recoil, high velocities, good bullet selection, short action.
My last purchase was a 7mm-08. But sometimes I think I should have gone with a 25-06. Also own a 270 and sold a 6mm. Anyone of the 4 should do you just fine

25-06 with 100s (or 115s) is flat and low recoil. (noticeably less than a 270 with 130 or 150s, for me at least).
Bolt action. Barrel no longer than 22". No magnums/AI. Flattest trajectory with 85gr-140gr bullets. Deer killer. What is your choice?
Good criteria. Don't need a magnum to kill deer. Good range of bullet weights. Lots of good choices out there--my choice is 6.5X55, but I settled for a 6.5-08 in a 22" barrel. Plenty of power for deer. Modest weight and recoil.

I've found the 6.5x55 doesn't do well with light bullets. Do you have anyluck with them?
6/06 fast twist spitting out 105's
For me... .260 or a Swede, since I don't have either.
7mm-08 in a model 20, 270 in a model 24, and I have a bunch of NULA's.
The Federal 100gr Triple shock/Winchester Supreme 110gr Accubond look interesting.
Moses you mean the 110 TTSX in 270? Yes it does.I have fired them, but not chronographed them....3300-3400 should be doable.
Actually a 270-130 gr Nosler AB at 3100 hangs with some magnum cartriges to 500 yards for trajectory.
120 TTSX in the 280 as well...
25-06. The .270 110 sounds very interesting also. Maybe a little more versatile.
7mm SAUM not really a magnum, more like a 280AI in a short action. Rifles are cheap, cases are plentiful, remington, Norma, and Nosler and 7mm bullets have great BC for long range, with tons of em out there. Mine is a model 7 stainless/synthetic, 22 inch barrel and it cost around 550 dollars. Dont believe what some say about the short/fat rounds, they feed slick as snot.
Im also a big fan of the 6.5X55, in a modern rifle its right on the heels of the .270win, which if you dont reload is the way to go, lots of good cartirdges out there that a flat shooting low recoiling...
Why not a plain' ol 243? Plenty of good bullets from 80-100 grs, very popular, low recoil, modest report, flat shooting, and effective...

Man, I'd love to find a SAUM locally, but they are really scarce in Oregon. I don't know if few were sold, or those who have them aren't letting them go, or what.
7mm/08, great selection of bullets, low recoil, kill any deer walking the face of the earth!
I'd wait to see what the new M700 Mountain Rifle is like and then pick from 7mm-08, 270 or 280.
So we have a consensus! Pretty much any cartridge out there non-magnum/AI will work!
243 or 7-08. Or, if you're a bit more old school, the 257 Bob or 7x57.
They'll all work.
What I would like is a factory SAUM 25 caliber or a 25-284 factory csrtridge. I have not been in the mood to sit at the reloading bench recently.
.260 rem first, 7mm-08 second.
7mm-08 Remington gets my vote.
I've tried about everything reasonable on deer over the past 4 decades. .222, .223, .22-250, .243, .270, 7x57mm,.30-30, .308, .30-06, .357 mag., .35 Rem., .44 mag... For the past decade I've decided to just stick with the .30-30 for woods hunting and the .243 on more open ground. Nothing else has really proven any more effective, just more costly and/or impractical in one way or another.
With a 22" barrel, factory cartridge my choice for a flat shooting, low recoil rifle would be 7mm-08 or .243. I'd throw .260 in there as well, but factory ammo isn't quite as common as the other 2.

I have a 25-06 and 270 both drop deer equally well. If my 270 will shoot the 110 ttsx well the 25-06 may find a new home. I have my eye on a new rifle
Looking for a "quarter bore".......25-06 or maybe 257 Bob.
.260 rem first, 7mm-08 second.
x2. here's da winner
6.5 x 55 Swede or 257 Roberts
Just realized you wanted no longer than a 22" barrel, my 270 is 24" and the 25-06 is a 28" Encore Pro Hunter. Not saying either can't be had in a 22" barrel but barrel length is a sticking point with some concerning these cartridges.
.260 rem first, 7mm-08 second.

Right...except...the last (or in this case second...grin) shall be first, and the first shall be last!

Punch out a mountain 700 in 260 to 6.5x284 or a 7mm-08 to 284 and go forth....

Are those Vermont deer so tough that .260's & 7mm08's bounce off 'em?
The Saber Tooth Ex's can be quite tough skinned... and the 08' case is boring.....

Ruger M77 Hawkeye Standard .257Roberts, 22" barrel, long action, 80 TTSX, 100 TTSX, 100 NBT, 110 Accubond.
.260 or 7mm-08 are the sensible choices. I also admit they are a bit boring.

I have a sneaking suspicion that will be my next deer rifle. I hope it plays well with my other .25s... '06 and Weatherby.
300 Weatherby Vanguard sub MOA Series II. A 150g Nosler Partition at 3540 fps shoots pretty damn flat. I had a 270 for 40 years (gave it to my son) and it was overkill for deer, but since I've had the 500 Jeffery, I'm pretty insensitive to the recoil of the smaller magnums, so what the heck!
Bored with that one. Want something that shoots flatter and doubles nicely on yotes.:)

Got one. They work well!
