I'm in the process of having a .257 Roberts built on one of my Model 70s. For now, it is slated (and waiting) for the PacNor barrel to arrive.
What I'm starting with is my bone-stock, blued, Classic Compact and having "RedNeck" rebarrel it with a PacNor SS .257, do some action work and bed it all back into the factory wood. Plus anything else he deems needing done at this time. I can see future plaans, after deer season, of possibly a McMillan stock and/or having all the metal coated to make it all one color. Looking for ideas and just want to see what everyone else has done. Thanks ahead of time...

If you haven't done so, I'd suggest a 1-9" twist.

Beautiful rifle Steelhead. I'm gonna be shooting 100-110 grain bullets. If I remeber rite, the Smith I'm using advised 1:10. What are you shooting out of yours ?

I'd go 1-9", I've had some issues with 110 Nosler AB's in a 1-10". Trust me, an inch extra won't hurt but not quite enough will.

I'm shooting 115 ballistic tips in my .25's with no problem. Have done 120's too, again no problem with 1:10. Flinch

Here's one my dad put together on a small ring 98 Mauser. My son got his first deer with it last season. It loves 100gr Hornady's.

I'm not sure on the twist, I know its a Douglas barrel and would guess it is 1-10".

Scott's right as far as the ROT. I have both 1-10 and 1-9 twist barrels on rifles in 257 and from now on will only put a 1-9 on. The tipped bullets are getting longer for weight and the 1-9 really shines.

I'd also go 1-9" twist, had a 1-10" custom barreled 25-06 that would not shoot the heavier bullets at all well.(and lord knows, I tried)

1 in 9 here as well. 10 is right on the ragged edge of the longer bullets.

A Shilen I had with a "10" twist was more like 10 3/8". Up to standard 100 grainers were 5/8" at 100 yards. The 100 TSX, the 110 accubond, etc were 3" shooters. Not good.

1 in 9 is the safe way to go.

Here's my little gem I picked up last year. It hates 100 gr E-tips but loves 115 BT's and 120 PT's with either of the 4831s.

this one is my daughter's, left hand 700, 21 inch Douglas SS 1 in 10 twist, featherweight contour, Brown stock, Leupold compact in Talleys, blueprinted and bedded by Mickey, who also did the stock painting per my daughter's color scheme. 12 1/2 inch pull, weighs 6 lb. 10 oz with scope.



this is one of the first groups I shot with it when I picked it up at Mickey's shop. Grace's first group with it, in the rain, was sub 1/2 MOA. It do shoot.

What boolits ?

117 gr Hornady factory loads....I haven't even bought dies for it yet, because I doubt I can beat these.

did run a box of federal premium 120 partitions through it with similar, sub MOA results.

This rifle is one that knows how to get AHEAD, er, ah a head? That was all that was showing when I had to take the shot. From sticks at about 150 yards. Accurate little rifles are a hoot!

Certainly does ! I personally haven't quite caught on to the Ackleys...yet. The question in my mind has been, If "more" is wanted or needed, why not buy something bigger and possibly less hassle on the ammo ? But I'll get there one day

Thanks for the compliments. I had a close twin to the 257 in 7x57 I built on an '08 Brazilian action. In a weak moment I sold it to a buddy for a pretty good price. I've tried to buy it back on numerous occsasions but the answer has so far been a resounding no. And I don't think he'll be changing his mind anytime soon. So then I come across a good deal on a set of 7x57 AI dies. Long story short, another Mauser build, this one on a VZ-24. And I said I wasn't going to do another Mauser...

These pictures aren't the best and were taken before I knew the correct way to intall a Montana sling but here is my Roberts built by Biesen on a 1909 Argentine.

Thanks guys. I bought the barreled action from Roger and was told that his Dad did some of the work on it. It was a project whose owner never paid for the work and I was able to buy it from them. Beautiful guns and workmanship IMO.

Not a rifle but close, my ULA Model 20 Hunter Pistol in .257 Roberts.

Certainly not as nice as some of the other .257's, but unique. VZ-24 Mauser action. Full length laminated stock. 3-position safety. Leupold VXII 2-7 scope. Timney trigger. Douglas barrel.

I'm likin the swivel stud on the barrel...btw, the folks at McMillan must have seen your stock..the checkering on the forend of your last rifle is the same they are putting on their Featherweight Style Stock. Got one coming in the next couple months..or less

I must say theirs some nice looking rifles out there.

I love my 257 Roberts, it's my only rifle at the moment. Mine is the Ruger M77 tang safety. It is just like the day it came from the factory (few dings from use). For the last year I have been thinking of dressing her up. A nice laminate stock, re-work the trigger or put a Timeny Trigger in. I have also been toying with the idea of a new barrel for her, something in a #4, 24 inches, target crown and a nice coat of Arma Coat.

Now I am seeing some people suggest a 1 in 9 twist. Is this a better twist for the 100 - 120 grain bullets.

1:9 seems to be a better choice for the longer bullets, such as the 115gr Berger, especially in the slower 25s like the .250-3000 and the .257 roberts. I got a Pac-no 9 twist .25/06 barrel for a Savage rifle. Also put a similar barrel on a .250 AI. Necessary? I don't know, but they both shoot very well.

+1 on the 1-9 twist if you are going to put a new barrel on, especially with the weight bullets listed.

I went with 1-10 3 groove and have never had trouble with the bullets you want to shoot. Also it gives you a bit more versatility

Mine was my first ever custom... built before I was introduced to the 'fire. Czech Mauser action, Timney featherweight trigger, A&B F34 contour barrel cut to 257 AI, Dakota 3-position shroud safety, Remington 798 take-off stock, metal work all bead-blasted and parkerized. It shoots wonderfully!

If I had it to do over again (among other things) I'd run a 1-in-9" twist, as this tube only shoots longer bullets around 1-1.5 MOA rather than the sub-MOA groups I get from shorter 100s and lighter.

Someday I'd love a standard Bob on a Mexican '98 action with a nice trim barrel and beautifully figured walnut stock...

But it is a 257R and shoots pretty well


Classic blue steel and walnut, as usual.

There are no flies on any of theses rifles. And that M70 featherweight should make a fine Bob. My .250AI is on the compact classic. Sweet handling rig.

My .257Rob is going to be on the Classic Compact as well. Barrel should be coming in pretty soon from what they say. Gettin pretty ansy here to get it back and work up a load for season. Downside is, the barrel ISN'T with Redneck yet and I haven't been given the go-ahead on shipping it (rifle) to him so he can do his thang. Again, my dumbass mistake for waiting so late. Just had to get all the ducks and dollars in a row

Got everything shipped today...I'll be adding my Roberts to these pics before long.
Still looking for advise on coatings. Have no idea how durable they are, no experience with them. Don't mine doing it myself unless some bake-time is envolved...rather send it to someone who knows what they're doing. Just want the best job with the most durable product. It will be going over blue receiver, stainless barrel.

How the hell does a 1-10" give you more versatility than a 1-9"?

It can shoot lighter bullets without over stabilizing them....grin.

Question for Redneck or any of the others that have built a 257R on a SA Win Model 70....

How well does the SA handle this round as far as the magazine length and feeding from it are concerned? Any issues pro or con?

I have a Classic (CRF) SA model 70 in 243 that aspires to be a 257 R someday, and I was wondering about this...

Seeing as Redneck has agreed to do this, I surmise it will work a-ok as I know he knows his way around a Model 70

I would be very interested to hear how this has worked out for any others that have gone down this path as well.

Lots of differing opinions about this, and some folks just flat won't build a .257 Roberts on a short action. When I was pondering doing so, I read several pieces by John Barsness (Mule Deer) saying it worked just fine. I was persuaded and Jim Kobe did the work for me. I believe I posted a picture early in this thread, perhaps on the first page. I have been completely satisfied with my short action Roberts.

BlackBart~ Lee sent me a measurement of "2.86" in my factory mag well WITHOUT any alterations and gave it the Big OK. Incidentally, mine is a factory Win. Classic Compact (New Haven). And even BETTER news is...this morning, MY BARREL SHOWED UP !! Not sure I'll be sleeping tonight.

Glad to pass along my aquired knowledge passed along to me by the fine members here at the fire. Talked to Lee today and I had to appologize to him at least once, prolly twice , cause I'm just about giddy over my first build. Things are moving along great ! Especially considering I waited so late in the year to get things going on this build and a stock from McMillan for my Win. 270. Won't be doing that again (for myself and everyone else involved). Lee has a top notch rep on here for his work. And that moves rite along into his personality. I've spoke to him several times over the last couple months. I was waiting for my Bob to get back from the smith when this thread surfaced. I received the rifle on friday, so I'll bring this thread back to the top. It is simply a restocked Remington 722. Some specifics:

Front sight replaced with a redfield hooded sight, for looks, of course.
Neidner-style buttplate and grip cap from Brownells.
Griffin-Howe hinged floorplate and trigger guard (courtesy of Ebay).
Ebony foreend tip, which happened to be a little marbled instead of solid black.
Scoped with a Leupold Alaskan 6x.
