i recently purchased a 99 Model T. Could somebody tell me on the front site is the orange bead a insert or does the orange just wear off?? I have seen on Gunbroker that the gun was missing the orange insert. Mine does not seem to be missing anything, but it is not orange. is ther such a thing as a orange insert if so wear can find ?
Some had the orange bead. Some had the orange bead, but the orange insert has been lost. And some came from the factory with the standard front sight of the day, which sounds like the case you have described with your rifle.
My T has a regular old gold front sight and I am certain it is factory.
Randy
thanks have rear sight not on gun has the white line on it was that standard ? seen 1 go on gunbroker 2day 4 2150.00 made me look at mine as nice just no orange bead . thanks again
semi-buckhorn back sight with the vertical white line was standard issue on the T as far as I know.

Yep, he's right. They were red. Most I have seen have faded to orange over the past 75 years.

Here a few More Of Mine. 11 out of a few I Got.
My 1946 EG has no front sight bead. Is it supposed to? If so, where can I get one?
No, no front sight bead on the 1946 EG.
no wonder we don't find many Ts in canada
No, no front sight bead on the 1946 EG.
Thanks...Sort of wish it had one or a white dot or something. Peepers are not as good as they used to be!
nice pic. do u have the t in 250/3000 understand its hard 2 find ?
T's in 250 are easier to find than Ts in 22HP... and probably 30-30 come to think of it...
thanks 4 all the info great web site this campfire. seten aside the T 4 now got a 99f with the t in 308 an cant put it down hopen 2 shoot it soon . dont get it wrong the t is nice but the f is my deer gun this year. just lv that F
Unless that 99T is immaculate, pick up some 300 Savage bullets and take it out. The 99F is much easier to lug around, but you're going to like the recoil from the 99T much better off of a rest.
I like 99T shooters. Got a few, two in 250 and the rest are 300's.
If it is immaculate.. might be best to treat it as a safe queen and find another to take out shooting.
Pre-mil 308F
Pre-mil F's are my favorite 99 "hunters"
Here is one of the few Ts that I own... its in 303 and has one of the most beautiful pieces of wood I have ever seen on a non-engraved 99...

What's the price tag say hanging on the lever? It looks like $200.00..
I won't say what I paid but I think I did all right. The number was an inventory number...
Joe:
Probably need another zero in that equation somewhere.
Drew's just showing off now. Drew, isn't that the one you said you were going to sell me?
Randy
Randy, I said, I would sell you this one...stocks just a little short...
And BBH, the second gun in the picutre belongs to you know, I believe...
Here is my T. The F and what got me started. My Dad traded 6 Buffalo Sabrres hockey tickets in the Old Aud for the 99 250/G.
Is that receiver sight a Redfield or Lyman?
Do you have the original semi buckhorn back sight?
Edit: Sorry, see from one of your earlier post's that you have the original back sight. You'll want to hang onto that.
Randy
Here is one of the few Ts that I own... its in 303 and has one of the most beautiful pieces of wood I have ever seen on a non-engraved 99...
Drew, send me that old piece of wood and I'll get you a really nice modern plastic version made to replace it.
John
I have own or have owned a few "stock" 99s with better than average wood but this butt stock would go up against many on the highly engraved guns... I wish I could get the T picture to post at a larger size b/c its really hard to see just how nice it really is. This is the closet 99 that I own in terms of wood quality and its an AB engraved gun...
Drew
That is a beautiful piece of wood. What year is it from and what cal
Johno
not sure of the year but the serial is 54.xxx, and the caliber is 38-55
Being that it's an engraved gun, it probably shipped in 1905 with a SN of 54.xxx. Normal rifles would have been end of year in 1904. Beautiful rifle!
Both sides of the stock on that 99T as nice as this one?

randy redfield on t lyman on f @ hangen on 2 rear sight.
Thanks for the date help Rory, I'll get it lettered one of these days and let you know for sure, and yeah, both sides of the T are nice... I'll try to post up some other pictures later this week.
Fancy walnut< same stuff they used on my model 430 20 ga.
how about this one for fancy walnut
Is that fancy or curly walnut?
hahahaha... that is circassian walnut and is factory documented... I just wish it was mine... I tried but sort of regret not trying harder... for a non-engraved gun in 303, it sure brought a LOT of money but in a lot of ways understandable to right collector...
got me a new 1 2day its not a t but i sure like the feel of this 1. just hope shoots good . is that t on gunbroker worth 19 res not met . the last 1 looked alot better went 4 2150 may went 2 cheep ?
Popp, what is the caliber on the one you bought today? Got any other picutres? Serial range? Is it a smooth shotgun buttplate? Looks like A-3 checkering I think they call it... got one just like it in 303... letter request was mailed a few weeks ago.
As for as the value of the T's... I don't that a 300T is worth more than about $1500 even in 95%+ condition, 250 would be the next most expensive, followed by 303, then 30-30 at probably a fair chunk more.... in 22HP a LOT more.
Others here might argue, and the market will show you the prices... they have been several Ts in 300 for sale for quite a while and most bidding was not going much over $1000 then suddenly these last two have received monster bids... who knows.
Cheers
I'm right with Drew on that one. IMHO there isn't a 300T in the world worth $1900. 303 and 30-30 maybe, 250 or HP definitely. But then again, Drew and I don't get to determine market value, buyers and sellers determine price and market value.
A gun is worth whatever somebody is willing to pay for it. Just boils down to what is any particular gun worth to you?
Randy
Popp:
Here is another dirty little secret people don't like to talk about. That $1900 bid on that T might not even be a real bid. It might be somebody that knows what the reserve is trying to run the price up for the seller. Beware of reserve style auctions. You don't know who is bidding, what they know that you don't know or what their motivations are.
drew its a 300f take down ran # made in 37or 38 on the 300fwat i was told not really sure but im tryen 2 learn thanks 2 all REALLY @ NO DID NOT PAY 1900 .
Nice rifle, hard to find them with the checkering. Only made the last few years of the F. Good grab.
the raised ramp should have been the give away but the forearm looks to have 3 points to the rear... all of the checkered F's that I knew of had forearm checkering just like a G... might just be the picture.
I would like to find a few decent F's... I had one for a while but sold it recently but it was just not quite right.
Congrats... post some more closer up pics... we all love to see pictures and drool...
Love to see some good pictures of a checkered F
Randy
drew or any 1 have a pic of rear sight 4 that f would like get 1 year 37 38 wont use it but wen gone son 10 opens safe appreciates its . I SURE DO HOPE
I got a nice checkered F but can't post pics with dial up. Happy to email pics if someone would like to post.
Johno
Sweet!
I am not a real big fan of the pre-war F's, I like the G's from that time period better, but I would definitely grab an F like that if I were ever to stumble across one.
Great lookn' gun.
Randy
interesting that it is 3 point checkering on the forearm. IF you don't mind, what is the serial? Looks like RS or K style checkering on the forearm.
Neat, I did not realize they did any with that style checkering.
Johno,
If you still have my email address, feel free to email me and I will post your pics. PM if you need email addy.
362892 definitle a f stamped on gun.
any 1 c that 250f on gunbroker it must of sold 1595.00 i was interested the wood looked rough . hope i didnt mis out was it worth it ?
This is what I am used to seeing in checkering on an F forearm...does any one else have a checkered F with three point checkering on the forearm?
This is Johno's gun, just posting the pictures for him
Drew
Thanks for posting s/n on my rifle is 378578, I think that would be 1938. Must be getting late in the serial range. For those interested in prices this one cost approx $850.00USD
thanks
John
ohno, I think you did alright... according to Murray the checkering started in 38.
Mine is 366xxx and looks like Johno's.
Johno:
That is one beautiful gun. What caliber did you say that was?
Like to see a picture of it with a dead animal.
Randy
Randy, its 250 sav, my dream would be to find a companion in 22 h.p, thats not going to happen down here.
Our prices are much lower in general terms than the US. I am trying to find an auction ctalogue from maybe 8 years ago with beatiful color pics of a 99K, I was able to handle the rifle and it was as close to mint as ive ever seen. It sold for $2,000.00AUD that would be about $1,850.00USD. I just could'nt get the money together, guess we have all been there. The other thing I missed a few years back was a 1920, 250-3000 till with the original box and papers and 2 boxes of ammo. This rifle was written up in an aussie gun mag, have tried to track it but no luck
Johno
johno pick up murray your gun looks nice dead animal plus your checkering looks right no clue on mine.look book more work now thanks 4 pic. popp
I have been looking at several Savage 99T auctions and was curious if the muzzle on the T should be flat or crowned? Also, would it be blued or polished?
Randy, I said, I would sell you this one...stocks just a little short...
And BBH, the second gun in the picutre belongs to you know, I believe...
dREW
yOUR bOTTOM oNE lOOKS LIKE THE ONE THAT WAS LISTED AT cABELA'S
That bottom gun is an F isn't it?
Thank you for answering my questions Drew.
Steve,
That bottom one was an F in 308 that I bought off gunbrokers and then sold to Boswellbuckhunter.
Rosspal,
was that the answer you were hoping to hear?
Drew,
I won't get my rifle until next week. The individual I purchased it from said it was all original, but I never specifically asked about the muzzle. I just wanted to be more educated when I look it over next week. Thank you again.
Ross
drew got another 1 gunbroker could not hit buy now fast enough 99 300f 2views. its nice cant wait get it. who would of thought my first post 99T would of stuck around this long. Thanks to all for info. The 99 T guy is here to learn. Please keep up the great info. I am a newbie at this. My girl says I am a addict? I may agree, but does any other guy get [bleep] from his girl about guns from this addicting Savage Site?????????
I just purchased a Savage 99T in 30-30 with a 20" barrel. I was curious if all 30-30 caliber Ts came with this length of barrel or were some made with a 22" barrel?
Murrays book identifies the 99-T featherweight as coming with 20" & 22" barrels. Does not identify specific barrel lengths to cal. I sure other members might have additional information on your question. GW
only the 300 came in 22"
It should be 20"
